These are the 2 bents that will be either side of the truss . I left out the cross braces for now until I can see how they are going to need to fit .

Here is how I see the truss fitting onto the bents.

I am looking for ideas now ( hint , hint ) for what to make the steel tie rods that connect the top and bottom of the truss together . I have some 2-56 steel rods ( control rods for RC airplanes ) but they look to big against the timber . I thought I might try some bristles out of a push broom if I can find them long/straight enough I need about 4 1/4 inches total to span the truss and have a bit left out for " nuts and washers " Any suggestions would be appreciated .

Bridge is looking awesome!

For the steel tie rods, have you considered getting some solid core wires and just stripping the insulation off? Can pretty much get any gauge you want in that. Might have to do a little bit of straightening, but might be worth a shot.

The copper wire might work . I had thought about that at first , but decided against it as it was too big , I was thinking about the 12 G buss wires . I forgot that I had used 18 gauge as feeder wire ( getting old I guess ) and I could use that painted black . Thanks for making me open my eyes .

Lynn , that's my problem , living where I do , my local hobby shop is a two hour drive and then they are mostly R/C car oriented . Thank goodness for Kleins .

I have the same problem Jim, no hobby shop here. I bite the bullet and order from hobby shop 400 miles away and get it in a week. U.S. folks have it made for shipping , quick and cheap.
Do you have any places around that may service pianos?

Try a flower shop.

If that's not available .. pm me with your address, and I will mail you some. just give me the length and how many.
I assume that you are talking about 1-1.5 inches dia.?

Thank you Sherrel , that is a very generous offer , I may take you up on that . Did I read somewhere where you also sold scale wood?

Off to the hardware store and flower shop now to see if I can find anything .

Jim,

If you have a local Lowes or Home Depot or similar, you could try getting a length of Telephone Cable then strip that down. That will give you (from memory) around 12 strands of wire X the length you bought.

I found some 1/32 brass rod at the local Ace store . That store is turning into my LHS , now if they just sold loco's and rolling stock . Its interesting since starting just these simple scratch projects , how much you can find that can be repurposed for our hobby .

You'll find that many things that are not specific to the hobby can be used on the layout, and at a cheaper price as well, especially when it comes to scratch building.

I am finding that out Tony , and I can start to see why many do scratch build things . These bridges are my first attempt and I am finding it a lot of fun. So I think I have the truss portion just about complete now . Take a look guys and let me know what I am missing ( besides the obvious modeling skills :) )

Jim,

That is going to be an impressive feature on your layout Sir. I may have over looked this but, how high is it in real terms?

Looks good Jim. Before you get too far ahead of yourself, have you accounted for the terrain that the trestle will sit on/in?

Tony , the tallest bents are 15 1/2 inches and the length is 45 inches .

Lynn , yes I have taken that into account , kind of . I know I have to leave allowances for construction so I made the tallest bents 3/4 inch short but that is on the fairly flat bottom , just not sure if I leave the allowance on the bent or the terrain for the bents that travel the incline/decline . Red Oak posted a pic and it shows that the railroad kept cross braces even and adjusted just the bottom cross brace to fit the terrain .
