Ken;
Here all we have had to worry about past couple of years is, Cat 1 & 2 Hurricanes after they weaken from Cat 3-4, Opal, Ivan, Katrina all came near here in B'ham. They were still Cat 1 & 2 as they passed here, caused a lot of tree & powerline damage.
One of the local TV stations even got a "tower cam" video of a tornado spawned from Katrina over in Tuscaloosa, and followed that jewel for about 5 minutes before it disappeared into the rain shield.
We also have 2 severe weather seasons with real bad**s thunderstorms spitting out F1-5 Tornadoes, Spring and Fall. Last F-5 here was one the ground for almost an hour, and killed 34 people.
That one even made it as part of a HBO special.
And according to the GFS forecast models during the winter, we are always two weeks away from the next blizzard. Last blizzard dumped 22" of snow in my backyard. But that was 1993. We've had two ice storms (hate ice), and exactly 1/4" of snow since.
As long as there aren't any quakes from the New Madrid fault, (scientists say if it has another like in early 1800's, there will be severe damage as far south as here even), I'll stay right here in the "sunny south" where its safe
