Brrr..... 37 degrees this morning and with the onshore wind that makes it penetrating cold out here! Don't laugh at me ?? just not winterized anymore!

I'm happy to report, Willie, that the joint we went to was EXCELLENT! Little hole in the wall, been there 65 years - owned and operated by an Italian family who came here when the streets were still dirt. You gotta remember that this town isn't really that old and basically was a stage stop between Corona and Oceanside/San Diego.
The food, service and atmosphere were all outstanding!
We certainly plan on going back - pronto!

Well top of the morning to ya! Happy St. Patrick's Day. My father was born in Ireland, mom born next door in Scotland. So you can imagine my Celtic up bringing. Does anyone know where this "pinch if you're not wearing green" came from? I never heard that till arriving in TX.
Corned beef and I'll try the green eggs.
Rainy day forecasted so I'll have to see what kind of trouble I can get into later.

STAY SAFE

Good morning from Wisconsin. I am Irish/Italian but tell everybody I am an American. If you celebrate this day do so safely. My paternal grandfather was born on a boat coming over from Ireland, his wife, my grandmother was 6 months old when they left Ireland for America. My maternal grandparents were both born in American about ayear or so after arrival here from Sicily.

Well after 4 nights the son explained why he showed up here. His beloved mommy pushed this one off to me to respond to. He wants to start an executive air taxi service from Austin to Vegas, the LA area, Fremont and back. He can buy the planes he wants to start with but needs backing for a couple years. I almost choked! I asked did he talk to his uncle, he said yes but he wants 40% of the business. Yep, that’s my brother.

Trains, the son has been working on the lack of bass in the locomotive sound and figures under the layout woofers and went looking at Best Buy yesterday but came back with ZIP, maybe a first ever going into BB and coming out empty in the annuals of our family. He is going to use the sub woofer I think from my theater system to prove this works and I’d like it.

Still organizing the workbench. Lots of stuff to sort and label the drawers. Enjoy your day.

Save businesses? I heard that many of these small business loans are not loans, but rather gifts that never have to be repaid. I wonder where and how the accounting of these monies is being handled and who's checking on how the money is used?

Comments like that could cause a lively discussion, eh? Seriously, I'm skeptical that there is any oversight involved. Small Business is somewhat of a sacred cow, in a world where corporations and / or Unions are considered villains by opposing factions.

After several weeks of very dry and windy conditions [and accompanying wild fires], it is currently 39°, with fog and mist. Over all we have had 0.10" of rain in the preceding 24 hours. The outlook for the next 7 days is to return to our normal cool, cloudy and rainy climate. :(

Corned Beef, Cabbage and Potatoes are on this evening's menu. I actually look forward to this tradition.

Today, marks 5 years and 1 day since I acquired my F-150 V-8. Considering the current odometer reading is 21,500 miles, it's still almost like new.

I'm still debating whether or not to get the truck inspected today. May as well, get that out of the way.

I have plans of going down to the train room later today. Need to run the track cleaner and start some landscaping on the next module.

Ken: How are you making out with "Das Lokprogramer"?

Good morning all. Have been busy as usual. We have been hosting relatives and friends of my son and his wife that came to visit them and see the new addition. No sense paying for a hotel room when we have a few spare bedrooms. Haven't had the computer on for around a week. The kids finally got to take the baby home last Friday. They were pretty well stressed out for the first couple of days but are coming to grips with being new parents. All are well and the baby is beautiful.

Joe - We really don't need the stimulus check, but I know I can probably put it to better use than the government. Like the photo of the locos in the weeds. Clean sharks?

Jaz - When I was in the Navy I was lucky enough to have traveled to 73 countries and have seen how unappreciated the foreign aid was. A lot of it was pocketed by politicians. Why are we sending money to countries that hate us? Like the photos of the weathering on the wagons.

Justin - Nice work on the merchants row. Looks like plastic. Mine is so old it was made of resin.

Willie - As usual, great photos.

Greg - Happy to se that Riley is behaving. I wouldn't bet any money on her not being able to use stairs. We had and now have a couple of minis and they did just fine on the stairs. Ginger being 13 now has to climb slowly step by step or give the look that she needs help buy she could and Molly does scamper right up the steps. Hope you feel better soon.

Sherrel - Happy 30th. Forgot which anniversary (Dec 22) that we had hot dogs and beans. Tried to get to town but the country road was drifted shut.

I did get down to the train room for a few minutes as some of the visitors we had wanted to see the trains run. Tried something with the phone camera to get better depth of field. Took a photo from a bit further away and then cropped it in the phone.

Good Morning everyone.....over-cast and drizzle. Heading down to the trains after lunch.

No plans other than clean-up the layout room and work on some kits, mainly truck and wheel weathering and coupler installations.

Plan on Saturday to drive to my secret train fanning spot where I can legally park within 15 feet of the mainline where the trains run slow either coming or going to a yard that I know. I parked there once for an hour while crews worked on signals and then one of the guys came over and let me know that the trains were delayed and the next train would be in two hours. A nice guy indeed!!!

Willie: Yes....the government is handing out the $$$ in bunches. Maybe my CM&N Railroad would qualify for a forgivable "loan" to purchase new HO equipment?

Chet: I like that first photograph you posted of the rail yard and main street running parallel to the rails. Lots of vehicle traffic on the main drag!!!

Really Cute Baby, but needs an Engineer's hat from Grandpa

Soon I plan on moving my work bench out of its location semi-under the layout so I can wire one of my new voltage step down devices to power a Miller Engineering sign that's currently battery operated. Purchased a bunch of them on Amazon for $14.00 where a friend purchased just one for $10.00. I bet I find a lot of dropped parts under the bench, like couplers, coupler pockets, screws and who know what else. The work bench is a breast to move since it is solid wood, but on small rollers.

I can connect the step-downs to any DC power source and then measure the output to 3 volts. My lighting DC transformer can handle as much of a load as I can provide so that lighting buss maybe the best choice to connect.

TomO: Your work shop looks great to me and when you have time please come and organize my small area.

Our 45th anniversary is coming up real fast!!! I know an overnight stay at a Casino in a suite is in order!!! We usually get a complimentary suit when we stay over night....big spender me. I have no problem staying in the room watching Green Bay TV stations while Cathy is down playing the slots.
I'll play the slots, but not lose a lot of $$$.

Lunch and then train time. Bye.

Greg

For what it's worth these past few days have been crappy in the world of railroading for me. Broken throttles. Broke a mount on the GP9s motor trying to figure out why it runs hot. Which is a new development. So I'll add a can motor to the list. Just a whole bunch of setbacks....
Your recent run of bad luck makes me wish there was a hugs emoticon...you certainly need one, hope the bad luck runs out very soon, and some good luck comes your way, I think I would have gone and taken a break by now totally depressed, you clearly have some staying power, luckily this place offers moral support, a lucky find :)

I don't know where it came from but we had it as kids in Arizona and then when we moved to New England when I was 10, they did it there too. So it is pretty wide spread I think. The kids do it now in Utah.
I suspect but do not hold me to it, that it is an Irish thing, green is worn for St Patrick’s day, probably linked to lucky clover, my forebears on one side are Irish although I am not aware of any current relatives living there. The odd red head or auburn still pops up.

Does anyone know where this "pinch if you're not wearing green" came from? I never heard that till arriving in TX.

Growing up in Baltimore as a kid,, in what was predominantly an Irish Catholic neighborhood, you would have welts by the end of the day if you were not wearing green. Even as an adult, I'm not taking chances! Even though I'm only 1/4 Irish! (the rest is Swedish, English and German)

Today, everyone is Irish, whether they are or not.

I am not sure in our family. My dad is Welsh/English and my mom Norwegian/Swedish. On my dad's side, however, there is a "Viking princess from Dublin" way back when. But those were Viking transplants and we don't have a lot of record what happened that far back in the line... I need to ask my dad. He did the "gene analysis" thing and his main haplotype for one certain marker from the UK was not English, but rather a variant that is strong in Scandinavia and weak in the UK. I suspect his English line goes back to the Danelaw when the Danes were in charge of a good portion of England.

I get a freebie I have green hazel eyes, but moss green is one of my favourite colours anyway, I have lived in a number of places in the UK and never come across the wear green, but I have never lived anywhere were there were high numbers of Irish my childhood friend was a Kavannah and they were really Irish the boys 6 big strapping scrappers never messed with me cos their little sister was my mate, total bonus. one of them got done for a wages robbery he got caught buying a Porsche the same week DOH. The sawn off shotgun ensured he got a long stretch and the fact it was a hospital wages won him no sympathies either. His poor mum.
on a brighter note......2 hamburgers 2 hotdogs loads of onions no bread but a big bowl of balsamic vinegar crisps and a pear juice

Evening fellers. I hope everyone is well. Walls are up on the merchants row. Finish it up tonight hopefully. Have some touch ups to do on it. However it turned out pretty good. Atleast to me it did. I'm satisfied with it. Ordered parts to fix my GP9 today. I'm beginning to think I should stop messing with stuff for the time being. You would think having irish in my blood I would have better luck. No such thing in my world. I'm not going to whine about though. Cant have ups all the time. I did get some items in the mail that helps with my spirits. Still learning the cab control 55 throttle. I think its issue is lack of amps. I'm used to 1.5 to 3 amps out of my walk around throttles. This poor thing isnt putting out 1 amp! It's just under that. I think 0.8 amps? Or it has crappy low end control. It's funny because I applauded this throttle at first. Then I used it to work the mine. That's when the short comings came about. Still runs my trains more quietly than any other throttle I have so theres that going for it. Anyways that's all i have for now. I'll stop by later if i get a chance.
