Good Morning All. 57° and partly cloudy. The rain magically disappeared from today's forecast and moved back to tomorrow night. Yesterday's high temperature was 85°, considerably above average. At 9:00 pm it was still 81°.
Again yesterday, I didn't see a lot of the inside of the train shed. I did get a couple of pictures for posting. The first is the highway overpass that is being used as a divider between what will eventually be a scenicked part of the layout on the left, and the unscenicked staging yard on the right.

Next is a picture of the Atlas Switch Tower, marking the interchange junction with SLSF.

Finally, a still in process farm homestead across the track from the tower.

That shed is one that I scratchbuilt out of leftover laser-cut wood sprues and stripwood. Still to come is the family cemetery that will be behind the shed. I'll also be adding a few more rows to the vegetable garden that's on the left, as well as a pickup truck somewhere. More details will be added to the shed including a wheelbarrow, hay bales and loose hay on the floor. I intended to add a workbench as well, but decided that it won't be visible unless you lay your head on top of the switch tower, so I am saving it for another scene

Joe - Due to the heat, my gardening season usually ends in late June, so I gotta start early. I start planting in late January. Fall is hit or miss depending on rainfall, last year was a bust.
Chet - Congratulations on the bowling. Regarding your SIL, yeah, that truck full of parts is probably really handy! I try to keep a pretty good supply of electrical and plumbing parts around.
Sherrel - I used to railfan the MP during the 70's, they shared a line from Oklahoma to Ft Worth with the MKT, that also had a branch that split off in Denton TX and headed for Union Station in Dallas. That branch is now a commutator rail/light rail line. All of those lines got merged into UP in the early 80's. The FT's were long gone by the 70's on that line.
Justin - Nice photo sequence.
Terry - My SD40-2's from Scale Trains are pretty smooth runners, equal to if not better than my Kato's.

Everybody have a great day.

Willie

Morning Decoder Pros (with exceptions)
46 degrees this morning going up to 60 for a high with partly sunny skies and a 10% chance of showers (I won't hold my breath).

Will be doing some cleaning in the garage this morning - no telling what I may fine. Want to see if I can get at least one car back inside of a three car garage and scratch out a place for to lay some track or maybe a module to bring inside upstairs?

Willie - The farm scene I like - neat little shed there! You need to smear a little red-clay Texas mud on the lower half of that car to look like a real Texas farm.

Garry Safe travels and congrats to the GD on the Honor Bequeath - that's great.

Looking at all the marching and goings on yesterday reminds me that more and more we are only a few elections from full-blown socialism. For the most part CA is already there!

Good morning. 24 degrees to start of a nice sunny day.

Willie - Like the farmhouse scene. Hopefully I will be able to get a lot of work done on my blacksmith shop scene today. The race has been cancelled in Martinsville due to snow. I also keep a pretty good supply of both plumbing and electrical parts on hand. My wife calls it junk, but I can't count how many times I had just what I needed to repair something and not have to head to the hardware store.

Garry - Congrats on your grand daughter. Have a safe trip back home.

Sherrel - Like the F units. Nice photo.

Toot - I have seen this dome car in person, somewhere, but I can't remember where.

Here's a rail photo for today.

Afternoon fellers. I hope everyone is doing well. Stumbled on a video I would like to share with yall. I know the CSX fanfare is limited at best. But! This video has Wheeling and Lake Erie motive power and hoppers. And it gives me some scenery ideas for my layout as well.

Justin:

Interesting approach to joining rails at a joiner. No flux and soldering on top only to the have sand off the excess solder on top of the rails? The solder on top really doesn't do much of anything in my opinion. I solder from the sides and use some flux. No need to clean up harden solder if the solder is applied sparingly.

Well I just happened to stumble upon that video. Guy is getting a lot of heat for it. I never once thought about actually soldering the tops of the rails. I won't be soldering much of anything for a week or so. I broke my last drill bit earlier putting in my feeders wires. Not to mention my GP40 is down. It's lunging and the front truck is bobbling up and down. Never seen anything like that before.

Good Afternoon All,

I've done chores and did the grocery circuit today. Nothing much else going on. Tomorrow I think I will go to Jo-Ann's to get some strip wood to start on the wood decking that will sit on the "concrete" pad.

Justin- Great layout photos. Good to see you're happy with the layout.

Willie- Nice layout pics and scratch build.

Chet- Nice rail shot. What is the first picture of?

I hope everyone has a good night.

Good afternoon. Did get some work done on the blacksmith ship. Got some more ground cover and bushes in along with the gravel road and driveway.

20180325_150808.jpg 20180325_150905.jpg

Some more bushes and other details will be added after the glue dries. Probably a project for next weekend. Then it will be on to the pond after that I guess. I do like the way it works into the fairly large empty space.

Justin - Interesting videos. I do agree with Greg and I also solder from the side. I'll tough the tip of the soldering iron to the rail joiner and wait until it is hot enough to have the solder run freely down the web of the rails into the joiner.

Curt - The first photo was the race track at Martinsville where the NASCAR race was supposed to take place today.

No, If it ran as a Zephyr it would have been after Amtrak took over. That car was built in 1954 for the Northern Pacific's North Coast Limited. However the CB&Q was the owner as it was a pool car for joint service.

Thanks, came across the picture while reseaching AAPRCO private cars. An interesting variation of the NP scheme. Sort of a nod to the NP, but don't forget who owns it.

Good evening Shop Dwellers!

I got back earlier today from the RPM East 2018 convention in Malvern, PA [a suburb of Philadelphia]. Had a great time, saw many modeler friends that I haven't seen in quite a while. But i've been sick to my stomach ever since I got back, probably because I overdosed on greasy fast foods over the 3-day period and didn't drink enough water. Live n' learn...

I'll come back later when I'm feeling better, C-ya!

Good/bad evening for me.

Major frustration! Downloaded a word processing program to compose a post on to then cut and paste but I switched in and out of looking for various information and lost the multi post file I was working on!

Arrgh !!

Justin, this video reminded me of the book "Railroads of the Yosemite Valley" by Hank Johnston. I read it years ago after a visit to Yosemite. Amazing what they did, winching loaded cars down what seemed to be 20+% grades. At the end of the book is a chapter called Modeling Plans & Details. I recommend this book. I bet David (Trussrod) is quite familiar with the railroad being it's in his backyard. Almost.

Truckdad: Apologies for the late reply. EL Portal, is at the extreme East End of the Merced River canyon which is the location of the two logging inclines.
The information comes from, The Timberman.
The incline on the South face of the canyon is very steep for most of it assent to the top. While it does have some milder grades of about 20% near the bottom but the majority of it's 6,340 ft length was a grade of about 78% ! Want to hitch a ride? That's the way the loggers could go up to work or down to get to try town. I've read that the ride on the loaded log cars, channel frame type was so nerve wracking many new men only lasted a day or two before they quit. I've also seen pictures where cars would derail and wind up on their side or almost upside down.

The Timberman is a very detailed and interesting reading.

Does anyone know if decals for TTX flatcars (H0) are available, the late ones either in black or the newer red TTX lettering. I can find the early TT Trailer train ones, but not the later ones.

My comment on the butt soldering of flextrack. Not a good joint. A "Butt" joint in fact.

I think the supporting feature of that solder is the track joiner. I would solder down into that to make the joint stronger. I make my own transition tracks for code 83 to code 100 track with only the butt weld of the rails. When the track is glued down, its not going to move so the solder point is keeps the very fine alignment of the railhead and electrical connection.

Good Morning Guys. 68° and partly cloudy. Only made it up to 76° yesterday, warmer weather is forecast for today. Cooler temperatures for tomorrow along with 100% chance of rain.
Once again, I only spent a short time in the train shed yesterday, with church, socializing and household chores taking up the morning and early afternoon. Then it was outdoor chores for a while before just running trains for 90 minutes. Why does life get in the way?
Thanks for the comments on the farm scene; Sherrel, Chet and Curt.

Sherrel - Too soon for weathering yet, but it's in the future.
Justin - Interesting video of the CSX units. Kinda strange looking at the different sized fonts used on 8076's numberboards. Regarding the soldering video, hard to believe that someone does it that way. I can't help but think that it will fail soon. And the abrasive paper to boot! Even me who is lousy at soldering to begin with, knows better than that entire video.
Chet - You're moving at a quicker pace than me on your scene. It's coming along nicely. That damn throttle just keeps getting in my way!

Everybody have a great day.

Willie

Good morning everyone. 44 and rainy, heading for 63 and chance of rain all day. Rain coming tonight and tomorrow, too, into Wednesday. They say there are flood possibilities. Time for coffee, I guess.

Well, the train show was great. I'd post some photos but I left my iPad at church yesterday - hope it shows up in Lost&Found - I really need that thing. I did score some stuff for the layout: five freight cars, four structures, three vehicles, two turtledoves, and a partridge in a pear tree:p. Total cost: $97. Not bad for a few hours walking around the show. Admission cost $7, so I guess I have to factor that in, but then I won a $10 gift certificate to the LHS, which I will definitely spend this week! The freight cars all wear northeastern railroad markings (Central Vermont, New Haven, etc.), which is mostly what I want besides NYC; the structures included two industries, one house, and a switching tower; the vehicles were a car, a pickup truck, and a John Deere tractor; I also bought a couple of lumber stacks ($2 for the pair). Had to change out the couplers on two of the freight cars, but that took all of 10 minutes, and everything runs fine on the layout.

I have some photos of the layout to post, if I get my iPad back. Otherwise, I'll take some new photos with my SLR camera or my phone and post them when I can.

Garry - congratulations for your granddaughter's accomplishments!
Justin - great photos of your layout at work. Also, nice to know I'm not the only one around here who breaks drill bits. I'd estimate a dozen since I started this build.
Willie - like those photos you posted.
Chet - nice progress on that blacksmith shop.
Terry - With everyone else, my condolences on the continuing saga of strange stuff going on. Also hope your wife gets better. Best of luck as you tackle that whole issue of your housing situation going forward.

In the train room, I changed out the couplers on those two new freight cars, ran all five of the new cars around the layout, glued down some more roadway, added vehicles to the layout, and continued work on a house kit. Will post photos when I can.

Have a good day everyone.
