Steve, LOL. I think that's what they call a Freudian slip...or maybe two in his case. Alligators are actually very adaptable animals. Like Rex said, they are sometimes transported to different locations. Sometimes it's like the lumber company getting them to do a job and other times it's when Junior releases that cute baby alligator that's now three feet long and biting him all the time.
They can live in waters with temperatures as low as freezing as long as the water remains ice free. They can easily travel as much as ten miles overland at night so it's just a matter of one moving to another pond up the road when the competition gets too tough or the fish run out. That's pretty much how they've ended up as far north as Virginia.
Rex, we do have a bunch of gators here. Every once in a while, one will stroll down Main Street, which sets off quite a commotion. They've been eating all the ducks at one of our parks on a river slough and the duck lovers are up in arms to "get something done". I'm not sure what they expect the city to do with alligators.
Ray, old cats are like old guys - just not too cooperative at times.
Chris, they don't build homes on canals here like they do in Florida. I think there's where a lot of gator-human interaction occurs. Most of our gators live in swamps and river sloughs so the only people who run into them regularly are fishermen and hunters.
Paul, sounds like you did good to keep your five bucks. I like playing video poker in Vegas, where there are machines that have more than a 100% payback with perfect play. I've made a few bucks over the years as well as getting a lot of comps. Most of the casinos outside of Nevada range from not too bad to awful when it comes to the player having a chance to win. The ones in Alabama are all actually electronic bingo and you'd do way better to give the money to your favorite charity and write it off on your income tax. I spent a grand total of 15 minutes in one here and walked out. I don't like gambling as much as I do winning money and there's no chance of that here.
Corey, glad to hear you have some of the material you need to build your layout but I tend to agree with the rest of the guys here. It's a mistake to negotiate model railroad purchases based on what she buys. She may give in but it will cause a lot of resentment. Much better to sit down and work out a budget that hopefully leaves enough left over for you to make modeling purchases within your budget. Your budget should include maxing out a 401k or whatever other retirement plans you can get. It's a lot more fun to retire early and build your railroad with enough money to spare than to scrape up money now that could be better used to plan for an early retirement.
Jeffrey, we had a few spits of rain and that was it. I saw the squall lines over Louisiana and Mississippi but they pretty much dissolved before they got here. The "Not As Hot" front went through last night so it's "only" 94 right now instead of 100 like it was yesterday. The weather guessers say it will get down into the upper 50's tonight. Liars!
