Coffee Shop Part 10

Afternoon everyone.

Chris, the alligator is still a federally protected species but you can hunt them legally with a permit in Alabama. It only remains federally protected because the American Alligator can be confused with the American Crocodile, which is an endangered species. The alligator has been extending its range and can now be found as far north as southern Oklahoma and southern Virginia. They are becoming a real problem in Alabama since they have no natural predators and have started to hunt for cats and dogs in people's yards. I would also wait for a trapper of fish and Game to show up unless the alligator presented an imminent threat to another person. Sounds like this deputy just likes to wrestle gators, which most departments would frown on. I'm pretty sure I would have gotten in trouble if I was found driving around in my patrol car with a gator in the back seat.

Jeffrey, another hot one coming up here too - we're already up to 98 at 12:30 pm. I'm hoping for at least some clouds and a shower or two but it doesn't look promising right now. I hope your doctor's visit goes well. I can imagine that all those meds you have to take can really drain your energy.

Tom, have fun on your vacation, we'll still be here when you get back.

Ray, I have to get my ears examined every six month because of my Meniere's Syndrome and I hate having my ENT digging around in my ear. I usually don't have much of a problem with wax but sometimes it looks like he pulls a python out of there. Yuck! I can only dream of having the air conditioner off down here.

Steve, congratulations on being selected. How long do you have to make the move and what's your schedule? I imagine it must be quite something to leave your roots in the UK and head off to a different country although I'd probably pick New Zealand too if I had to move somewhere else. Regarding the alligators, people moving into their natural habitat in places like Florida have caused problems but the alligator is the invader further north, not the people. Alligators were unknown outside the deep south 50 years ago.

Good news, Steve! You will be talking Kiwi soon and sound like NZKEN. :D

Jim, the cop probably didn't shoot the gator because of all the paperwork he would have to fill out for discharging his weapon or afraid someone with a video camera would tape him for the "Cruelty to Alligators" pinheads.

G/Day guy's,,, how's it going, yis i am packing the bags for sure,,, but the big pain is the arse is selling the house, the market going down the dunny you could say. As long as we can sell for autumn we should be OK, we will lose around £20k but if we don't get shut by spring we could lose up to £100k, it's a mess over here now and getting worse. We'll be on the North island, Kens on the south island so we'll be a few hundred miles apart. next step is they send an invitation to apply which you attach job offers etc and they then process it, it may take from a week to three months depending on how desperate they are for your skills,,, the wife is a very highly skilled nurse and they are very short,,, so.

Jim why have gators moved north, is it because of people etc or another reason ??

Afternoon people!:)

Well got some rain inland at the park i was at! My house I got a trace reading in the rain gauge!

Jim, the problem down here is not the population of people as much as it is with the Gators! florida is still vastly unpopulated down here, remember florida's largest industry down here is still cattle ranching! The real problem is the federal protection the Gators have been enjoying as you said they have no natural predator other than board cops and with tons of good food to eat with in easy reach............well with these pluses Gators are very happy! Gators are nothing more than rats and they will adapt very easy, Gators have become very brave when it comes to people and the population explosion of them is easly seen! they need to have more open seasons on them to get populations under control!

Steve don't feel bad for them they have a great life and THEY BREED LIKE RATS. They are out numbering people soon! Want a pet Gator Steve? put a cannon on him and call it tank!;) NZ Hmmmmmmm? never been? Your Lucky:) could be worst you could be transfered to Florida!

I am still here. I would have loved to have gone to bed by now but it has been nuts.

My daughter had a basketball game tonight. We got a call on Sunday that a team needed a player and would she help out. Since this league is competitive, well organized, and the premier youth league in the area, and the fact I have been trying to get her in it for the last two years we said yes. Her first game was tonight so we thought since she will miss the next one and possibly two we should go. It was a good thing we did. She played in what I will call her first real basketball game. She got two points, had to shoot a couple of foul shots (she never did that before unfortunately she missed both). She got a bunch of rebounds, had about four steals, and two blocked shots. She looked beat after the game but said it was the most fun she had had playing basketball. BTW her team won 28 to 13.

When we got home we found the water bottle for the guinea pig to be leaking all over the cage. Of course all the pet stores and department stores were closed. So my wife and I spent the evening hitting all the grocery stores to find a new bottle. We got home and installed the new bottle about 11:15 PM.

See you all on next Tuesday night.

Good morning.

It's 70 and quite cloudy here this morning. The high will be in the mid 90's and there's a fair chance of thunderstorms this afternoon.

It got pretty wild here yesterday with thunderstorms coming and going, high winds, power going on and off and the cable signal was mighty flaky at times. I hope it doesn't make a repeat performance today. I sure hope the problems with Photobucket are over for a while. I see that it's back up this morning. I couldn't get on it at all at one point last night, though my photos were still available.

Good morning folks! Guess what I have in my garage! A whole bunch of 1x4's, 2x2's, and blue foam cut to size! I had a sudden infusion of cash for the greatest hobby on earth. My wide decided to to buy a couple of hundred dollars worth of clothing the other day. Granted, they are for work, but she just bought new clothes for work. This was an impulse buy if you ask me. I told her that it sounded like I was on my way to Lowes the next day. She couldn't argue with me. Normally I would cringe at the thought of these expenditures, but funding for the choo choos is scarce around here. To tell you the truth, I kind of flinched when I got the total. I may need to use my atlas code 100 temporarily on the back stretch. My wife is going to freak out when I tell her I need all new turnouts. She knows, but she doesn't know how much that's going to cost! Oh well, I can get started on building the bench work whenever I have free time. Remember when I was at home with all kinds of time? Yeah, I don't remember that either!

I hope everyone is having a great start to the summer. We are finally hitting the eighties around here.

Mornin' everyone!

Can't get old Sheila to take her pill in the pill pocket this morning....... I think she got into the boys food and isn't very hungry. I'll try in an hour or so... Then I get to stick my finger down her throat with it............

Corey my late wife would never have fallen for that one. Clothes are essential (as was most anything else she wanted) but trains are just an expensive hobby to be paid for savings in things like lunch money, what little I made from teaching guitar, and scrounging. Sounds good. Hope you have a lot of fun!

Morning All !Well looks like the rains finally stopped but it left it on the cool side for now only 61 if that today . Well I made it to two casinos on Monday First one was Presque Isle Downs & Casino in Erie , Pennsylvannia and the second one was Seneca Alleghany Casino in Allegahny, New York within an hour ride of each other. Lots of people in each other. I watched two people playing video three card poker at the Presque Casino placing twenty dollar bet and I was thinkin I could buy alot of train stuff with what they where betting . And they looked like a husband and wife so that was a lot of money they where using . BTW I came home with my five dollars in my pocket and even ate at the Allegany casin . My friend had complimentary money we used to eat with. Well I have to get going so I'll post some pics a bit later of the trip . hope you all have a nice day . Steve go get the buddy !!!!!!

:) Morning all!
Sounds exciting Corey, but beware: contra to belief, there is nothing equal in a marriage...particularly spending money :D.

Chris, Jim probably has as many gators as you. All he has to do is go a few miles to the Alabama River and it looks like the Everglades with gators.:D

Steve, they probably will let your wife into NZ and you have to stay home  :D . FYI: We have gators near the Tuscaloosa area. While there were always some around, years ago many were released here by timber companies to rid the bottom lands of beaver. The beaver dams would cause flooding of timberland which would kill off the trees. Now, they are from here to the gulf coast. Fortunately, even though there are many in the backwaters, a clash with humans (fisherman/hunters) is very seldom and is usually nothing but a scare (I know! ) not like Florida or Louisiana.

Howdy again!

The old kitty cat finally decided to take her pill about 10 minutes ago. Whew! I give them to her in a kitty treat made for that purpose called "Pill Pockets". She seems to be a bit out of sorts today but I can't see anything really wrong with her.

My parents many years ago visited my Sister and her family who were living in Florida at that time. On an outing to a park, my Mom said, "I wonder if we will see an alligator?" My BIL told her to look behind her. There was a 6 or 7 footer about 15 feet from where she was standing. They didn't know my Mom could still run that fast! On a few trips down to Geneva FL where they lived, I would go out to the St. John's River. Often we would hear the cry of baby alligators and were on the watch for Mom....

Rex thats interesting to know, i would have never thought of beavers,, LOL you learn something new every day.

One of our managers dropped a huge howler today in front of the top managing director following an overnight theft,,,
he should have said "The four DAY shift lads" but said "the four gay shift lads"

Then to seal his fate

he meant to say the burglars entered the "lazyboy building" but said the burglars entered the "Ladyboy building"

The MD was looking at him very strange,,, bet he wonders what he gets up to at home :D

Steve, LOL. I think that's what they call a Freudian slip...or maybe two in his case. Alligators are actually very adaptable animals. Like Rex said, they are sometimes transported to different locations. Sometimes it's like the lumber company getting them to do a job and other times it's when Junior releases that cute baby alligator that's now three feet long and biting him all the time. :) They can live in waters with temperatures as low as freezing as long as the water remains ice free. They can easily travel as much as ten miles overland at night so it's just a matter of one moving to another pond up the road when the competition gets too tough or the fish run out. That's pretty much how they've ended up as far north as Virginia.

Rex, we do have a bunch of gators here. Every once in a while, one will stroll down Main Street, which sets off quite a commotion. They've been eating all the ducks at one of our parks on a river slough and the duck lovers are up in arms to "get something done". I'm not sure what they expect the city to do with alligators.

Ray, old cats are like old guys - just not too cooperative at times.

Chris, they don't build homes on canals here like they do in Florida. I think there's where a lot of gator-human interaction occurs. Most of our gators live in swamps and river sloughs so the only people who run into them regularly are fishermen and hunters.

Paul, sounds like you did good to keep your five bucks. I like playing video poker in Vegas, where there are machines that have more than a 100% payback with perfect play. I've made a few bucks over the years as well as getting a lot of comps. Most of the casinos outside of Nevada range from not too bad to awful when it comes to the player having a chance to win. The ones in Alabama are all actually electronic bingo and you'd do way better to give the money to your favorite charity and write it off on your income tax. I spent a grand total of 15 minutes in one here and walked out. I don't like gambling as much as I do winning money and there's no chance of that here.

Corey, glad to hear you have some of the material you need to build your layout but I tend to agree with the rest of the guys here. It's a mistake to negotiate model railroad purchases based on what she buys. She may give in but it will cause a lot of resentment. Much better to sit down and work out a budget that hopefully leaves enough left over for you to make modeling purchases within your budget. Your budget should include maxing out a 401k or whatever other retirement plans you can get. It's a lot more fun to retire early and build your railroad with enough money to spare than to scrape up money now that could be better used to plan for an early retirement.

Jeffrey, we had a few spits of rain and that was it. I saw the squall lines over Louisiana and Mississippi but they pretty much dissolved before they got here. The "Not As Hot" front went through last night so it's "only" 94 right now instead of 100 like it was yesterday. The weather guessers say it will get down into the upper 50's tonight. Liars! :D

Got the tentative job offer, for Law Enforcement Officer, on the same base I'm working on now. Based on my ability to obtain the security clearance and pass my Body Mass Index & fitness test, I'll know if I fully get the job. Doubt I can fail any of them, I have a Secret clearance right now, and thats what I need for the job.

Job is a three 12 hour shifts, then 2 days off, then repeat. 60 hours a week, but I can handle that easy.

Evening everybody!

I just ate my fudge pop-tart and glass of cold milk and life is good:p I would of liked a six-pack of RC and a moon pie but the pop-tart and a glass of milk will do fine:D

Jim,

You ain't got to live on the water or near it down here to have a encounter with a gators! The gator has these little tiny little legs, they may be small but the gator is highly mobile and can walk miles from one poned to the next. They can over populate ponds, lakes and rivers so fast that they must move to find more food! Most gator encounters are away from near by watering holes........ some years back a gator was found under a car at the mall the closest body of water was well over 2 miles away, they travel more than I do!

Rex ,

Our Gators are bigger, tougher and just plan meaner than Jim's little lizards they call Gators!:DLOL's j/k!

Personal Note:
Got some rain at my park but non at the house:( But the lack of rain allowed me to catch up with my lawns. I got one done after work to day! Half way to next weeks gas fill up!:)

Howdy and a damp good evening from the Finger Lakes.

Chris, all you need to do get it to rain is set up sound for a nice big outdoor festival and you can almost see the clouds forming. Our church had its 54th. annual Strawberry Festival tonight. Most of the City of Geneva is there and is a major fund raiser for several charities in the community. I have been doing sound for it for several years now. We were doing great until the last performing group, the High School Jazz Ensemble. Their second number was done is the rain, so we took a 10 minute break, unplugged and got out of the rain. Only around here do you get rainstorms and sunshine at the same time I think. As soon as they stopped playing it cleared off, so they came back out and started to play again. One more number and I can see a cell heading right for us...... By the end of the next song, it was raining lightly, we announced that we were done for the evening and by the time I was picking up, it was pouring! Anyway that is a good formula for rain. Another trick I know is to go on a camp out with a Boy Scout Troop..... Works almost every time!

Jim old Sheila recovered her not wanting to eat by lunch time and took her pill then. She has been bugging me for food several times after that, so I guess she must have eaten the "boys" food before I got up and just wasn't hungry. She has been right here helping me ty''''''''''''''''''''''------m hudfok pe..dk'kkxdt

Have a great evening all!

Thanks for the warning guys. I managed to pull a fast one this time. Buying all of the lumber was actually her idea. I had the use of a family pick-up, a day off, and the cash to purchase the materials. I was only going to buy enough for one section, but she said to just buy all of it. We are both contributing to our IRA's, saving a thousand a month to pay my mother back, and saving a thousand a month for the future home. We could probably save more, but we are spending money like drunken sailors lately! I think that is out of our system though.

The future money for track and such is going to have to be earned by doing landscaping projects for the family. My mother and grandmother would both like a ton of projects done at their houses. I would do it for free, but they won't let me. They know that I don't have a lot to spend on hobbies, so they pay me ten dollars an hour for work they would pay someone else twenty an hour for. I guess it seems fair to me. I've tried not taking the money, but they get offended. Who am I to offend the women in my family!:D

Thanks again for the words of wisdom! We don't have alligators, but we have mosquitoes that could carry off a small child!
