Weekend photo fun, Dec 28th 07 to whenever

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Josh, nice job on those decals. I know they are tough little buggers to get on straight after doing my police cars. What kind of warning lights does BNSF uses on those? The CSX uses full-size light bars on some of theirs, which I was thought was a waste of money considering they spend 99% of their time way off the road by the ROW.
Just a simple little round yellow light on most.

Oh man are those guys in the shop in trouble now!!! LOL

Here's the story behind this poor SD-40-2. I am going to build a complete 360 degree roundhouse. It will be placed into the corner of the layout. I saw an article years ago where the author did this. The stalls in the corners were very short, so he cut engines up like I have done. I will be sacrificing a few more in the near future.

Like this?

The two blue diesels and the steam engine are only parts. Had to do it to get a 13 stall roundhouse on a 2 foot wide module! The doors on the left of the blue units have nothing behind them.

Mr. Bourdreau,

Yes, that is it exactly!!! Thank you very much for re-posting that picture for me. I could visualize it from memory, but having the picture sure does help. I plan on doing something very similar to what you did except a complete circle (but I didn't want to take up too much room in the process).

Here is the second engine to get the welder's torch. I won't do anymore until I know exactly how small some of the stalls will be.

Don't have anything new to show, but at this time of year it is good to look back and see the progress made in my favorite hobby. In the last year the area now known as Hopewell Junction went from this:

And from this taken last February (Note area on the far left):

Inspired by the layouts on here with lighting I decided to give it ago. I picked up a string of Christmas tree LEDs. 10 on a string for £0.79 Here are the results

Jerome, I know you had to do it but it just doesn't seem right somehow. :) Bob, nice example of way to squeeze a roundhouse into almost no space.

Ray, I was looking back through some of my old pictures today (must be a New Year's nostalgia thing) and you and I started building about the same time. Amazing difference in just 10 months and I never spent more than two hours a day on it. I like to think my downtown is more correct from a city planning point of view but Hopewell Junction is infinitely more charming. That bandstand and the multiple levels just set the town apart from the standard railroad town. Great job!

John, great use of those LED light strings. Unfortunately, the only ones they had left over were colored lights hee but I'm going to keep an eye out for some white ones. What did you use for power? You guys are on 220 volt house current over there, right? Did you just plug it into the mains or take off the plug and use something like a 1.5 volt power supply?

There are some really good photos on this Forum!
Bob, Thats a great re-creation. I too have the original issue and the update is really neat! Where did you get the Doodlebug thats on the turntable in your roundhouse shot?

Scott, Good work on your layout, I like the dinner and tower

MikeKnuckey, Excellent weathering on the caboose (or Van as we're supposed to say up here in Canada!)

here's a few shots of my layout:

It's a Walthers model that I custom painted. I don't know if they are still available.

Thanks, Jim! It really does help to go back and see what you have gotten done over a few months. I try to do that when I start thinking that I am not accomplishing anything. Only trouble is I think think my work may be improving and now the stuff I did 2 or 3 years years ago doesn't meet my standards of today. I guess that is a good thing?

BTW, "City Planning"??? We'll have none of that durned stuff in these here parts (at least not back in '25). Hopewell Junction is near a place called Middlesex. Even in the 1960's the Farmers around there used to take matters in their own hands when it came to "Planning Boards". A Farmer wanted to put up a small calf barn on his farm near the main barn. Planning Board said no, you need a permit to do that and we won't OK it. About 40 local farmers all showed up at the next planning board meeting with pitchforks in there hands and said, "Huh"? The farmer put up the shed. Weren't no more more questions asked.......... (Don't think they would still get away with that one today.)

They are 3v LEDs with a battery holder for 2 AA cells. But I have found in my bits box a mains transformer that will put out 3V so i will be using that when i get round to it.
