Good Morning All. Clear and 66°, going up to 92° again today. Looks like sunshine and low 90's for another week. Chances of rain here are non-existent unless
Hughie sends a hurricane up this way.
Spent all morning mowing yesterday. I had only intended to just the east side, but I got carried away and did the north side as well. That leaves just the southwest corner and the "back 40" along the west to do. Instead of the 16" chainsaw, I just used the 6" mini saw on some branches that will allow easier work on the bigger stuff that's left. Laundry and other household tasks occupied the rest of my day.
Today is definitely back on the big chainsaw and I'll be starting the prep for putting the cover back on the pool for winter. Need to spread it out, dislodge any snakes hidden in it and rinse it off. I'm going to wait another day or two before I actually put it on, in case the water temperature warms up enough to get one last use out of it.
Out in the train shed yesterday was intended to be another train running day, which started out OK. Then a stuck coupler interrupted things. I took the boxcar off and made a less than pleasant discovery that I hadn't noticed before. All of the metal wheels and the metal Kadee couplers were covered with a white residue. Seems like some type of corrosion related back to when the water seeped through the roof into the train room after the tornado removed the metal covering.
I got out the Dremel with the wire brush and here's the difference between an axle that's been cleaned and one that hasn't.
These are the blackened wheels variety from Kadee. I looked at the next car in line which had Intermountain wheels and it did not have this residue. It did on the couplers though. I checked a few more cars with the same results. Some of the couplers were stuck in the closed position, which was remedied by burnishing them with the wire brush. Guess what's on my to do list now. I'll need to check out 800 freight cars now before moving them around where I can't keep track of them!
Everybody have a great Tuesday.
