too bad it does not have the "lightning" stripe - that was my favorite.
today is the day of imfamy. Back in 1968 the PRR and NYC merged to form the PC.
Sherrel: Thank you. Pre-op went well. Conference with PA concerning statistical probabilities and possible Pacemakers, alleviated my concerns.
Curt: Infamy? perhaps, then again maybe not. After all this time, I'm not sure...after all, the PRR was financially shakey and mismanaged, (Symnes and Bevan). Otherwise, merger with the NYC would not have been necessary. PC's failure led to the formation of Conrail, one of the most successful businesses and railroads ever.
I was working the Fireman's Extra List, in Wilmington, DE, on 01/31/1968. When I finished my shift it was still the PRR, and no one was sure whether the merger was going to happen or not. The next morning, I was called for crew 7A, at the South end of Edgemoor Yard. Everything, the sign up sheet, the timecard, the switching orders, everything said Pennsylvania Railroad, but something was different. Radio calls were initiated with "Penn Central", not "Pennsylvania"...and all the management people were under orders to personally contact each crew, and remind us it was now to be referred to as the "Penn Central". Nothing unusual happened on that day, but soon after, our starts on the Fireman's list, suddenly declined from twice / day to every other day, as cost containment ventures were implemented.
Ex NYC F7s 1796 and 1714 bracket ex PRR GP9B 3806 serving the PC at Selkirk Yard.
