Well, Good Afternoon Everyone. Just returned from the big city of Dallas, what a bunch of Sunday drivers there were on the road. Traffic was not heavy, but folks were driving three or four abreast at 10 mph below the speed limit on IH35E. I'm a somewhat impatient driver since where I live is far away from anywhere and I like to make good time. I was very good and didn't flip anyone off or honk the horn, but I did give the ugly eye to a couple of folks as I passed them on the right.
I spoke with Chet this morning before leaving home. He is doing well. He wishes everyone well and a Happy Easter. He's been without his computer for over a week, and we all know how much he hates to respond to the forum on the phone. He's not alone! Looks like he has sold his model railroad to the person that he told us about last month, so he will be spending time over the next couple of months preparing for that.
I'm headed out to the train shed for a bit before supper to run some trains and maybe I'll get a few pictures. No modeling intended.
On previous forums I have come across any number of people who have sold or lost their space or been moved to old peoples homes, so no layout, some have to give up because of ill health, but they can still come on these forums and discuss and share memories, knowledge and learn new,I have had at least two modellers who were helpful, especially ex railway workers with memories of actually work life, and not just loco drivers, electricians, maintenance people are universally loved, and had they had a computer so could continue to chat,I would say to people while you can take pictures put them on your computer so you have those memories and can if you wish share them, and even for those who are burgled! One well known woman modeller spoke about herself said where she lived and then was amazed when she was burgled and worse they not only stole the easy to grab good stuff that could be taken away but the xxxxx smashed the rest, such spite, they knew it was in her shed easy to get to, you cannot be too careful, and yes she had insurance but she still lived in the same place and the shed was still her only option so the layout was still at risk, and she now had to move all her bits in and out,and she Inferred she was gay so two women and an advertised layout,I notice she does little new work, I suspect the shed has nothing and she relies on old pictures,it is a sad fact of life, some of us work hard for what we have, and some others have no respect for that fact :( She is well informed and still has a big presence, but no sign of a running layout.
Sorry it is so negative, but if it makes any of you safeguard your own layout.....
Ours is in our loft, bedrooms right next to access, dogs, and anyone would be mad to take on my husband, plus we have monitored security, and an app on phone so it updates us when away.Dogs left full access, we routinely lock house if not going out even to the garden, and ding dongs on all doors.....although at night and really sleepy and you need the loo....do not forget those monitored cameras!!!
Covid also has bought its perils, dog napping here in the uk is now an issue, even guard dogs! locally a woman came out (luckily without her children) found her nanny goat missing when looking and found the head in a dyke! food? Head removed to disguise the carcass? Hopefully nothing more sinister, she screamed she warned others, horses have gone locally although prior to Covid,a friend walking her very large dog was approached by some bloke who said he wanted to stroke the dog, there have been cases of the dogs snatched in front of owners eyes, she called her dog, backed to houses told him the dog bit he was still coming until someone came out of their house, this woman is a good 6 foot and until a couple of years ago was a gifted black belt but wrecked her knee, yes it pays to think ahead. And in my experience these are not people who are struggling to look after kids or losing homes these are trash anyway who have just expanded into these easy cash earners, good honest people seem to struggle unnoticed, ignored, wow even I am depressed.

Here in the UK you cannot have big meetings or weddings, so something a little lighter

Morning all,

A lot of catching up to do.

The boy got moved over the weekend, but still has stuff at the house. I've still got the washer and dryer to hook up and everything else is on him. I got called in at 3:30a this morning and this is the first chance I've had to even look in here. Been fighting with a VM that doesn't want to behave. I'm still trying to figure out what it's doing.

Had a good Easter and true to form, the wife asked me what I thought we'd get for the house if we sold it and went smaller... The kids starting laughing and told her I said she'd say that. She wants a first floor laundry and a walk-in shower and no steps. I guess I do as well, but not sure I want to give up on what we have as there's work needed in our current house I'm not sure I want to do right now.

Good Morning All. Clear and 55°, heading up to 78°. Like Karl, I had fun with the grandkids yesterday, mine not his, but I got home too late to take a nap! My oldest will be 14 in May and is a young man as opposed to being a kid. His voice got deeper in the last year.

Let me have a couple of breakfast burritos this morning Flo. Bacon, egg and cheese will do.

I only spent about 30 minutes in the train shed after I got home yesterday and just ran a few laps with two different trains. Didn't even pick up the camera so here we go again to the archives.
Last month, I showed this hotel, this morning I found a long shot that shows the new structure being built behind it.

Guy - Plenty of barn swallows here, but they don't use boxes. They have rather nice mud nests under the eaves that are reused each year. It is actually illegal to remove them in the spring/summer, while in use. Not that I want to anyway, they help keep the mosquitos at bay. No Black-Cap Chickadees here though. They don't get too far south of the Canadian border.
Nice shots of the equipment as well as the tanker yesterday. Keep them coming.
Tom O - My wife's political views over 48 years have changed as well, maybe we both have changed some. Her views are more in line with mine now.
I have really tried hard to always remember to press "Save" when I set the alarm on my Galaxy S-9
Greg - Your story about the private Happy Hour reminds me of an event from the 60's. My parents and I went to an athletic banquet held in my high school gym to see speakers Ara Parseghian and John Glenn. In her purse my mother had a batch of martinis and two glasses. The gentleman sitting next to Dad, poured his water into his wife's glass so that he could also indulge.
I started gasping when I began to read that you were cancelling your ScaleTrains order until I read further. They are some of the finest locomotives that I own.
Have you ever tried steaming lobsters? My wife did that a few weeks ago with lobster tails, and not only did it work well, but they were delicious.
Alan - I have read that even just one Covid vaccination is rather effective. I understand about granddaughters. Ours is now 6 years old. We have a small stash of small Lego kits and set her up at the card table and it keeps her occupied for at least 90 minutes. I just slide out the back door and head for the train shed...eventually she wanders out there and finds me unless grandma starts baking some sweets first. I see why my daughter is more than happy to send her off to us for a 2-3 day "sleepover" every so often. We're enjoying it now since we know that it won't last much longer.
I really like your build of O'Neils. You make me re-think my reluctance to purchase Sierra West kits due to the price.

Here's hoping that everyone has a wonderful day. Be safe.

Morning!
It's slightly below freezing right at this moment, but, headed into a fine day with mid-fifties temperatures. That will be the story over the next few days.

I'm not going to be in the shop all that long today. There are some government papers I have to fill out and have delivered by tomorrow. I'm caught up in a real shit-show that was created by a long-gone relationship from 25 years ago, and the issue has to be solved. It has put me into a bit of a depression, and prevented me from doing the modeling that I love to do.
I suppose that is a lot of complaining; which is something I don't want to do in here. - Just know that persons with mental illness have far and away more rights than people who are healthy; especially if they are an ex relationship. They seem to be allowed to keep coming back for more. Sooner or later, that 'more' just turns into money and money seems more important in this world than life itself. - I know one thing for sure; our society has no real solution to deal with mental illness, except to lay it on ex-family members. That is a fact!

Willie - You have corrected me once again. The swallows I speak of are 'Tree Swallows', and they live in the boxes. The Barn Swallows here also live in mud houses under bridges and building eaves. Thank you for that correction!

Flat cars are hard to photograph without having the perfect background. They are just too thin to make things interesting.
Here is a fully loaded center-beam flat, proving that loaded flat cars arn't all that interesting to photograph, either:

As you can see, I've been trying to record the complete sides of these cars, so the words on the side can be read.

Gotta go; time's awasting! Have a good one!

Summer's almost here , 60's at night mid 80's - mid 90's on tap for as far as the eye can see. I think I try to get a shot next week , in a different county. Hays decided we did need any and canceled last weeks delivery . The county has had quite a few screw ups lately, and the websites are pretty useless most of time.

I assume at least some of you are preppers to some level, if so I have a question, has anyone here ever actually had to use their prepping kit for anything,we sort of homestead, collect water, grow food, keep animals as pet but for food if There is call for it, I do reflect some of this in my modelling, but could do much more, although do not want to rise my head above the parapet and get mocked. we have solar, not modelled and a wood burning stove with an oven, that I know is popular in the US my goat forum talked a lot about the strange weather this winter, and finally does anyone model aspects of their own homes.
my ark reflects a real ark

ibcs water we use for plants, keeping birds in keep planning a goat shelter, the modelled ones are solid cubes so I would needto scratch build,

plus connect 2 with a hosepipe and the water equalises with no work, I love no work :) would not be hard to model and black plastic sheet thin enough could do solar, I have a model barn so possible....hmm warming to the idea.
but you need to know what was inside and clean them out really carefully, and not poison yourself...there are signs that show there were food containers eg carrot juice but who knows if they were then used inappropriately we had one with carrot juice and one beetroot juice and the dregs were in them so a basic clean and a quick bleach made them safe. You can see ours not posh but does the job.

Good Morning Everyone....thunderstorm on its way here and it sounds like a rather heavy storm. At least its not a snow storm!!!

Tom: Our Easter Bunny couldn't stop enjoying screw drivers even after he said that he was a Milwaukee beer drinker. He almost got hit by a car on our road when he was leaving to continue his rounds.

Willie: Sorry about the possibility of cancelling Scale Trains. I have the two Milwaukee Locomotives on order and maybe I add the Wisconsin Central locomotive before the order deadline.

I watched Texas Law last night and found out that trespassing on another's land is a felony. In Wisconsin the fine is $1,300.00 and I wish it was higher. I give hunters a letter that gives them permission to hunt on our property so there no confusion if a Warden or Sheriff should ask. Here at home our lot slopes and the rear portion is out of sight and a couple of hundred feet from the house and an adjoining neighbor decided to clear some of our land of the trees and shrubs growing there. Need to have a talk with them, never meet the people and most people stay to themselves.

Willie - You have corrected me once again. The swallows I speak of are 'Tree Swallows', and they live in the boxes. The Barn Swallows here also live in mud houses under bridges and building eaves. Thank you for that correction!

At our cabin, the roof peak is 18 feet above the deck and Barn Swallows have made nest in a light fixture for years. One year no swallows which is fine with me since they poop every-time they take off from the nest. It turns out there's wasp nests near the nesting site and it must of discouraged the Swallows for using that spot.

Allan: Excellent model and craftsmanship. I could find a place for your structure on my railroad.

Tomorrow is a full day of Riley sitting. Cathy is taking a bus to a Iowa casino and I hope she strikes it big. I can't figure it out that she going across the state to a Casino when when have the big one in downtown Milwaukee and most if not all taverns have slot machines.

Time to go.................

Greg

Good morning from a weather confused Wisconsin. My portion looks like a storm will break out any minute. It is gloomy, darken clouds and 63f degrees heading to high 70’s. Radar shows no storms today.

The electrician left a while ago. Yesterday in the trainroom I was using the plugged in soldering iron and everything last night was strange. Lights blinking, no power at the bench, the outlets under the bench well some worked others didn’t. So I called the emergency number asking them to call me Monday morning. The owner was out this morning and a really nice guy was ticked off when he left. His crew will be out tomorrow. He pulled the circuit breakers for my cave, trainroom and the pool. He was heading to the office to pull the paperwork for the addition and pool structure to see who most likely was going to be suspended. The pool filters are running off an extension cord into the garage.

Jaz, security both for home and personal health is such an individual thing. I can guarantee you getting into our house uninvited isn’t in the best interests of a bad guy. I love the street scene you set up with the social distancing with the street as the divider.

Willie, our political views have greatly separated. As she becomes more super duper liberal I am going the other way. At one time we were very much the same on political views. It started changing around when Ross Perot ran for President. I do see both sides of the political discussions with my wife but she doesn’t. Makes for some interesting discussions especially when even if I agree with her I play devils advocate!

Alan, that is a great build.

Troy, how was that great looking steak yesterday?

Guy, mental health is such a confusing topic. I believe that TV shows and movies have depicted mental issues as if you have them you are a dangerous person. That is so far from the truth. However, in the USA getting help is expensive and hard to get. That has to change, but...

Not sure about the rest of today, enjoy yours
TomO

I really like your build of O'Neill's. You make me re-think my reluctance to purchase Sierra West kits due to the price.

Willie,
I have heard you stop being wonderful and fascinating to your grandkids when they get somewhere between 12-14 years old. I guess we'll see :) Scarlett is just a year and a half so we have some time to go yet. We do enjoy our time with her, and I certainly don't begrudge the lost modeling time.

On the O'Neill's build, thanks for the kind words, and thanks to the rest who have offered them as well. I get that buying these things stings. They average $325.00 or so, which beats even Rapido for the cost of single unit sound equipped locomotives. Maybe it helps to think of them not so much as structure kits as diorama kits. Each one of these builds a complete scene. You supply the scenery materials of course, but everything else except track and vehicles is in the box. I very much doubt its possible to buy that much lumber, castings, and detail parts separately unless you did a ton of estate sales and/or swaps and that would take much longer. What I like best about them is the way they stretch my skill set. I've learned a ton doing this build, and easily got my money's worth in enjoyment and satisfaction. We all have our priorities, and it's generally smart to stick with them, but if you ever find yourself with a place for one and the spare cash, I'd highly recommend trying one. They also turn up on e-Bay from time to time, though not at much of a discount. I'm going to do a few simpler builds after this one, but the next Sierra West kit I do will be this one. You get a lot for the bucks!

Dreaded monday again fellers. Almost no trains over the weekend. Went back to my home town over the weekend. Figured it was time to see the map dot once more. Always know I'm officially back when I pass more farm tractors than cars. Did catch a CSX manifest going through on it's way east towards Virginia. Otherwise I spent maybe an hour or two at the layout. Started taping things off for my roadway through town. I havent really wanted to work on the layout. My attention has been on the new neighbors who have just moved in. They are most questionable. They have already done questionable things that has gotten our landlord involved. Looking at a possible move as we have grown tired where we are. I have been working on getting a house in a very nice neighborhood that will still allow me to have my trains. The issue with that is will my layout survive the move? I guess only time will tell. That is if I can even move at all. Well I ain't got much else to add. I hope everyone is doing well and I'll stop back by when I get a chance.

You don't need to live in the county that you register in. Just be prepared to wait a few weeks now that vaccinations are open to all.

Leaving early as I got the stupid server running and everyone happily working (or not). Sad the "fast" computers aren't fast enough sometimes as it took over 7 hours to clear the issue.

On vacation next week as I have to burn the time, but since we're short handed in the IT department, I'm "on call" if necessary. I wasn't going anywhere anyway, but have some work around my house to touch upon now that stuff is moving out of the house.

The wife and I discussed the trains if we moved and I told her the tables would be gone and I'd do it differently in a new place. So I know she has it in her head, so it's a matter of time before it happens.

Good afternoon. It’s sunny and 77.
A month ago, I made an appointment to get my CDL renewed. It has to be done in person at a dmv office. I scheduled the day off at work for this coming Wednesday when I made the appointment. So naturally the sales department scheduled several things to be done here at work that day that nobody else can do. I have already been asked to reschedule the appointment, and my response was “NO”. I have to have a drivers license, which means I have to do this at the appointed time. No ifs, buts, or “but we’re busy”s.

I watched Texas Law last night and found out that trespassing on another's land is a felony.

It can be it they enter the property with the intent to commit a felony crime .
If they just cross the property corner , then its a misdemeanor. They get some pittance of fine.

If they are not an immediate threat to life ,limb , or property, the best way to handle it is use game cameras to catch them in the act and call the Sheriffs Department , thats what they get paid for.
