Afternoon, Everyone.
Been a while since I've been in so I'll take some extra strong coffee this afternoon, Flo
Rex, sounds like Steve could roast a whole ox on that furnace he's building.
And no, I never mentioned
THE SOUTH when commenting on how long it was taking to get street work done. Although, I have been trying them to get a pothole filled on my street for six weeks...
Ray, it's nice to here they are taking steps to preserve those old brick streets. When they are laid right, they are smooth as silk and sure have a lot more character than asphalt. I grew up on a brick street and Cleveland. Except for replacing a brick or two that cracked it never needed any repairs. When I visited the old neighborhood a few years ago, it was covered in asphalt that was falling apart but the brick that was starting to show through again was still in good shape.
Carl, I sure hope they decide to restore your brick street instead of relay the asphalt. It would be worth the seven weeks to me if you came out with something classy like a brick street.
Afternoon, Paul and Tom. It's cloudy down here too but it's also 70 degrees so I won't complain about the clouds.
Phillip, I know what you mean about the snow. 'Bout time for some springtime up there. You are doing better than me when it comes to sticking to your education. I did one year of my masters and decided that I needed to find a real job to support the family. That was 1977 and I haven't been back to finish it up yet. I wish I would have completed it but I made a good living without it and wouldn't be where I am today financially if I had gone on for a PHD.
Jeffrey, that cool that you got your volunteer firefighter plate. If you'll take some advice from an old cop, take that frame off from around the plate. Makes it very difficult to tel it's a VFF plate and I assume one of the reasons for having it is so you'll be recognized by law enforcement going to or being at the scene.
Larry, sounds like the truck came out nice, You'll have to post some pictures. love old pickups. I've got a 72 Chevy I'm weathering now as a farm truck. I know what you mean about being whipped after all that work. I planted two fruit trees this morning and feel like I've already done a full day's work.
Seems like the last couple of days have been nothing but things to do. Went to the fallen officers funeral Friday that lasted from 11:00 until 1:00. That preacher just couldn't stop talking.
It was almost 3:00 before we got done with the graveside service. It started to rain then but all the severe weather stayed north of us. It rained all night and until about 3:00 Saturday afternoon.
I had to do security for the church Saturday because they were having a women's conference about domestic violence. Up at 5:00 so I could be there at six in the pouring rain. We escorted as many women in as we could with umbrellas so we didn't get the whole church filled with umbrellas. Wife and daughter were late because some nitwit backed into their car at Hardee's on the way to the conference and wouldn't cooperate about giving her his license information. I told her to call 911 and let the police handle it. Turns out the guy was a registered sex offender who was wanted for parole violation.
Of course, her pepper spray was in her car instead of with her when she was initially talking to this guy. So much for listening to my training advice.
Things went fine at the conference although it was the first time I've worn a full duty belt in about five years. I forgot how much all that junk weighs. A Glock 17, two magazines, handcuffs, ASP baton, pepper spray, two radios, cell phone....About 17 pounds in all. I think I was on my feet for all but about 10 minutes from 6 until 4. The first multiple shooting I was ever involved in as a deputy happened at a very similar conference in LA in 1969 and I was more anxious about this than I realized until after it was over. They didn't have armed guards at that conference and several of the women commented they were glad to see there was armed security at this conference. I paid for it later though. I had some of the worst abdominal cramps when laying down that I've had in a long time. Shows you what happens when you get out of shape.
Aayway, we got two inches of rain and I was able to plant the fruit trees without a jackhammer so it's all good. We are now only about 6 inches in the hole on rain compared to 18 inches at this time last year so maybe we'll catch up if we have a normal summer. Y'all should see the azaleas down here right now -spectacular.
