Rex - kudos to your grandson, I'd be mighty proud too! I missed the post where you described the lightning strike...

Jeff - glad the foot MRIs looked OK. Hope you can take it easy from here on until the recovery is complete.

Jim - we're not too fond of Canada Geese up here either. They're known as the "bullies of the lake", since they seem to be chasing away all the smaller native duck species. I've seen them act pretty cavalier around humans, including this one time I saw a bird sauntering across a road with a 50mph speed limit. Everybody was slowing down or stopping to avoid hitting it. When I was driving home from work later that day, I saw a humongous pile of feathers and flesh in the middle of the road.

"Rode into work this morning in the lightest sprinkle I think I've ever seen. It's supposed to clear up later."
Phillip I don't think the sun came out for your ride home, at least here in beautiful downtown Emporia it has rained most of the day.

Nope, the weather man changed the report after I got to work. It went from 20% rain to 60% rain real quick! Thats OK though.....it's only water!

Phillip, I guess there's a difference between a guy who's a biker and a guy who happens to own a bike. I think that sounds like some kind of basis for a sermon.

Ooo, thats GOOD! I might use that next week!

On my apparent flu, this one looks like one of the milder ones. I'm keeping up on my meds and taking half doses of Vicks Dayquil (full dose wreaks havoc with some of my meds) so I can at least keep things down. Had chili dogs with the parents earlier. Now I'm sitting back watching some TV.

Sheeesh---what a day

It was a racing all over de place getting essentially not much done---the only two things done was finding a new person to replace human turkey and doing my evening classes after fighting construction destruction related havoc on a couple of highways that were peppered with detoured detours that had those detours detoured-----:mad:

I got a bunch of the bents somewhat put together--at least the first batch:):)

Jim I agree with you about those nincumpoops--anyone think they could do that deserve whatever happens----of course we used to think that cause/effect happens but now---not so much---eeerrgh:eek:

You do some fine work there Larry!

I agree!! You can set up a business with what you do there!:D:D

Good morning--

Yes, I got on at work. heeheehee:D:D Busy day today and then it'll be at school all day tomorrow for a day long conference---sheeeesh:eek:

Got a question:eek::confused:---many years ago a friend of mine and I went for a road trip through the midwest on route 66---there were a number of areas that came close to/crossed RR's when we drove through Ill., Missouri, Kansas--anyway that stretch---do you think that I would have some idea of who ran what through there?----no:(---what I'm wondering is which RR's did go through there----and is anyone of them still doing?

I wish I still had some of my old Railfan/Railroad mags---grrr:(

My schedule for work/school may change a tad as well next week ----I hope:D I would like to get some RR time in this mess----:)

Ken The Canada Geese have kind of taken over a section of roadway between my home and downtown---wondering around causing all kindsa fallout and making for a messy time----the argument used to be that one DID NOT FEED THEM----but that does not always work---seems that if they like the area--they'll keep coming back:eek:

Well, gotta get work done ---CULTR---:D:D

Goooood Morning!

Yah! It's Friday. It's been a flippin' long week. Sheesh!

Larry...I will view your work when I get home. I am at work and my nemesis, a MAC, will not let me view it. When I get home, my friendly PC will allow me to see it. :D

I am always amazed at the work you all do on your layouts. When I first became aware of those who do RR modeling, I was pretty cynical. I had no idea how serious they were about their fun! I've seen some incredible work.

Jeffrey...chili dogs?? Actually, I understand that. When I get sick, I like bean burritos from Taco Johns. When I am not sick, I don't think I could stomach them! :( Feel better!

Rex...Sorry to hear about your electrical grief. I hope not too much damage was done. What a bother!!

Heading to the hills this weekend. Will probably do the roundabout up through Estes Park and around down through Allenspark. Some absolutely spectacular scenery. Every year tens of thousands of folks head up to Estes to hear and see the elk bugling. This year news reports are saying that the elk are becoming less afraid of folks and one actually attacked a woman near her home. So I will stick to pictures of aspen trees and vistas.

Have a perfect weekend!

Sandy

Good morning.

It's 70 and foggy. The high will be around 83 and there's a chance of rain. What else is new.

Well, it's Friday and I'm still here though I woke up this morning feeling like I'd been hit by a car that got hit by a bus that got hit by a truck that got hit by a train! In other words I hurt in places I didn't know I had. But within a couple of hours I've begun to feel better than I have for several days. This virus-flu-bug whatever it is may be loosing it's grip.

A Georgia State trooper pulled over a pickup on I-75. The trooper asked, 'Got any I.D.?'
The driver replied, 'Bout whut?

Think about it Chris; you'll get it. :D:p

Finally got my boat trailer tires/wheels on. I couldn't get the danged lugs loose, even banging the lug wrench with a two pound hammer. My BIL came over with an impact wrench and made short work of that. I would have been up the proverbial creek, if I would have had a flat. The tire fit is close, with only about 1/2 inch clearance from the edge of the fender. BIL at 230lbs got on it and bounced and it didn't get any nearer. I probably need to shim up the axle from the springs.

Guess it is grass cutting time; so it can rain; so it can grow. I already sweated through one set of clothes with the terrible humidity. I think we are suppose to have a cool down next week, but I'll wait and let weatherman Jim tell us that:D.

Phillip, the farther north you go on I69, the worse it gets. I just got back from Fort Wayne, and I had to run the wipers and there was no rain!!! Got to Marion and we were having one of those nice, easy "pickle showers".

We've got James Dean Days here in Grant county this weekend. This will be the first time in history that I haven't had a car in the show. It's gonna feel strange not to be a participant this year. But I'll be well represented. About 15-20 of the cars we built at the SkunkWerks will be there. We have a sort of reunion at the shows every year. It will be nice to see how the cars have stood up and shoot the bull with my old clients.

The weather, from what I understand is going to be "iffy" at best. Makes for a bad time. The two parks, one in Faimount(James Dean's hometown) and Gas City get a bit sloppy. We had a similar circumstance in 1993. What a mess. My cars needed help getting out of the park in Fairmount. Big horsepower, slick tires, and wet grass don't mix well. Even my box stock 1966 Chevrolet Caprice had problems.

Looking forward to Philly Beef sandwiches, elephant ears, Strausie's Beer Batter Fish, and a corn dog tomorrow.

Phil, and the other Hoosiers, if'n you like old rock 'n' roll music, old hot rods, even old bikes, you may want to head to Fairmount or Gas City this weekend. Just bring your umbrella, just in case. The music, food and the cars provide one grand time. Faimount has the more nostalgic events with the showing of some of James Dean's movies and such. Gas City has the better food, in my opinion, and both have some outstanding cars.

Well, the better half wants to go to the grocery store. Why she needs me to go with her, I'll never understand.

Bob

Rex, what's I.D.? Thats a new one on me:D!

Well guys I got 14 days left now:( I talked to a few more folks in my area and I never heard so much BS in my entire life it's insane. I'm Might be the slowest Blade under the deck, but at least I'm the furthest Blade from the chute!:D Think about that one Rex!!!!;):p Any ways I know a smoke screen when I see one:mad::rolleyes: And if I read the signals correctly it's a good sign for me:) we'll see been wrong before....LOL's The wife is taking Ryan and Me to dinner:eek: I wonder where:confused: I'm in the mood fer a nice, big, cold salad!:p well I had better get ready..........TTFN:D

Well, the lightning list is:
1 Central AirCond control board
1 Comcast modem
1 DirectTV receiver
1 DVD player
1 Bedroom (older) TV
1 Shop (older) TV
1 Very new 29" TV (travel trailer)
1 LocoBuffer II

While on my way to the lawnmower, I remembered to check the TV in the camper; glad I did: sound but no video. I managed to get it into the TV hospital before they closed, but it is touch and go if I get it back for our camping trip Thursday. The older tv's were indeed old, but they did work fine. I won't repair them and probably only replace the shop's with a cheapy.

Hope I don't run into anything else. I checked all the appliances and A/C in the camper and it was only the TV and DVD player in there that got zapped. Strange but good thing, we were watching TV on our 50" during the storm and it survived it ok. BTW: all of the electronics are on surge protectors. They didn't work for this time:mad:

Afternoon, everyone.

Rex, you certainly have reason to be a proud grandparent. It's guys like Barndon that allow me to sleep peacefully in my bed at night. I hope our political leaders do what the miltary leaders want and flood that place with troops so we can get the job done and get out of there. I'll keep him in my prayers.

You're right about the humidity. It feels like mid-July out there. My neighbor just mowed his lawn and lookd like you could get about four bales of hay from the clippings. :) Things went from not growing at all to where you can't get them to stop. Indeed, it should cool off next week, at least down into the 70's and low 80's but the main thing is the air will be much drier and it will be a lot more comfortable.

Larry, you really started from ground zero with that deck. It's a real work of art and having storage underneath makes it even better.

Ken, the Canada Geese have started getting used to the heat and taking up year round residence. They are really aggressive, to the point of being dangerous. We were at a park near us a few weeks ago and a huge goose was chasing a two year old and biting her enough to draw blood. Her mom was screaming for someone to do something. Unfortunately, I didn't have a clear line of fire or he would have been a big pile of feathers. Pepper spray worked suprisingly well. The goose was still mad and running around but he couldn't see well enough to know what he was chasing. I think we should start a movement to have them all deported to Barry's lake. :)

Phillip, sometimes there's a big difference between having something and really being a part of what you have.

Jeffrey, I'm glad your flu is the mild variety. Somehow, chili dogs and flu just don't go together for me when I'm sick but I like pepper jack cheese. Go figure.

Barry, it's guys like you that make me happy not be working any longer. As far as your Route 66 question, it was the AT&SF from LA to Chicago with a few stretches of the SP GM&O, and Frisco. More railroads got mixed in after you left Oklahoma.

Sandy, I was up at Estes a few years ago about this time, when everyone was elk watching. One lady decided that stopping in the middle of the road was a pretty good way to get a picture. She caused five car pileup with some serious although non-critical injuries. Took about 10 minutes for the rangers to get on scene and about 20 miutes for an ambulance. It was worse that SF at rush hour. I had my paramedic kit with me so I treated the most seriously injured until they could get them transported. One of the rangers said they have crashes like this almost every day somewhere in Estes during elk season so watch out for that lady with the camera. :D

Bob, what the heck is an "elephant ear"? I assume somethng edible. Too bad about not having one your own cars in the show but I'll bet there's still be a few intersting ones to inspect. I hope the weather holds up for you. As to wives and grocery stores, I think it's genetic...or they just want someone to push the cart (or "buggy", as Mikey would point out as the correct term.) The first time we went shopping and I was told to get a buggy, I had no earthly idea what Dianna was talking about. The weird thing is the cart corrals say to return grocery carts here but buggy is the universal term down here.

Yesterday didn't go quite as planned. Went down to the basement to find my laptop sitting in a puddle of water  I thought maybe a pipe broke but it turns out my daughter took a shower with the curtain outside the tub and the water dripped out onto the one spot in the floor which has a crack in the grout, and that crack happened to be directly over my laptop. There was nothing else even damp. She's practically blind without glasses and just didn't realize the shower curtain was outside the bathtub. I took it all apart, blew out the water, and am letting it air dry. If it doesn't power up by tomorrow, I'll declare it DOA. It's about seven years old and it was time for something to break anyway. I think I'll replace it with one of those small netbooks, since I only use it for internet access and programming decoders.

I got most of the work done on the layout that I have all tools and such out for so I can spend the day tomorrow cleaning the basement. I've even picked up some plastic boxes they had on sale at Wallywork for seven bucks that will each hold about 50 freight cars. Maybe I'll actually be able to find things when I'm done. I know I have a Southern observation car around here somewhere.

Rex, how the heck did that surge get the TV in your travel trailer? Was it plugged into shore power at the time? That's the most things I've heard of being knocked out without a direct hit. It could be worse. We had a $500,000 home burn to the ground due to a lightning strike. It took eight minutes for the first fire unit to show up (the house is in the city limits, not out in the country) and, as the fire chief said "We threw everything we had at it". Turns out that was two pumpers and an engine. We have three fire stations so it seems like they should had a few more resources than that. At least it keeps their motto intact- "We've never lost a foundation". :D

Phil, and the other Hoosiers, if'n you like old rock 'n' roll music, old hot rods, even old bikes, you may want to head to Fairmount or Gas City this weekend. Just bring your umbrella, just in case. Now thats a crowd that would probably really appreciate what a Drifter is all about!

Jim......SO TRUE!

For those who have noticed I've been strangely absent today, I've only been doing what you've been after me to do. I crawled into bed and stayed there. After I get something to eat I'm gonna crawl back into the bed. Y'all have a good one.

Evenin guys! How's things here in the coffee shop? I had a couple of busy days at work but the weekend is here and Sunday I leave for Duluth MN. for a week. Got symposium to attend and then a couple of days of training on the new aircraft they build up there. On Tiesday I get to ride onthe North Shore Scenic Railroad, that should be a blast, it's a 2 1/2 hour ride, I'm looking forward to it.

Bob, what the heck is an "elephant ear"? I assume something edible.

Jim: An elephant Ear is basically a huge hunk of fried dough that is usually covered in butter and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Not very good for you, but man they are tasty!!!:D
