At our County 4H Fair in Alexandria IN there is one booth that has elephant ears coated with Splenda. Not quite as bad for ya but still not good for ya either.

Half the taste of the elephant ears is knowing how bad they are for me. But, it's only once a year so I see no harm in one..... or two, mebbe.

The real "slobber-knockers" are the deep fried beer battered fish sandwiches and the Philly Roast Beef sandwiches, covered with green peepers and onions, smothered in cheese. Those babies are to kill for!!!!

Went to a couple of pre-show festivities, earlier. I was recognize as a past "Peoples' Choice Award" winner. Actually a 6 time winner with 4 different vehicles. We are going back to another gathering as soon as the better half gets herself together. Me? I'm in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt with tennis shoes. I've been ready for at least 40 minutes waiting on her. As far as the past awards, I think I'd rather have the "Peoples' Choice" over the "Best of Show" award. And I still own the Willys which won the award in 1997.

Finally, she's ready!!!!!! Off for a few beers and some old time rock 'n' roll.

Bob

Well, the lightning list is:
1 Central AirCond control board
1 Comcast modem
1 DirectTV receiver
1 DVD player
1 Bedroom (older) TV
1 Shop (older) TV
1 Very new 29" TV (travel trailer)
1 LocoBuffer II

While on my way to the lawnmower, I remembered to check the TV in the camper; glad I did: sound but no video. I managed to get it into the TV hospital before they closed, but it is touch and go if I get it back for our camping trip Thursday. The older tv's were indeed old, but they did work fine. I won't repair them and probably only replace the shop's with a cheapy.

Hope I don't run into anything else. I checked all the appliances and A/C in the camper and it was only the TV and DVD player in there that got zapped. Strange but good thing, we were watching TV on our 50" during the storm and it survived it ok. BTW: all of the electronics are on surge protectors. They didn't work for this time:mad:

Rex, how the heck did that surge get the TV in your travel trailer? Was it plugged into shore power at the time? That's the most things I've heard of being knocked out without a direct hit. It could be worse. We had a $500,000 home burn to the ground due to a lightning strike. It took eight minutes for the first fire unit to show up (the house is in the city limits, not out in the country) and, as the fire chief said "We threw everything we had at it". Turns out that was two pumpers and an engine. We have three fire stations so it seems like they should had a few more resources than that. At least it keeps their motto intact- "We've never lost a foundation". :D
Our house got struck by lightning many years ago. It struck the television cable on the pole, EVERYTHING that was connected to the tv cable got zapped, as well as a powerpack and Kato C30-7. TV, VCR, Stereo. I have no idea why the locomotive and pack got zapped, but they sure did. Everything affected looked like I'd hooked it up to the main power feed for the local nuclear power plant, and threw the switch:eek:.

Guy's, this man IS more than likely talking from Experience! Terry is the kinda guy if he can finda way to cram a 454 big block into a VW Rabbit he will do it!:D:D:D:D Soooooooo Terry tell me about how much trouble you got in when you stole electric directly from the power plant? that had to be one hellava extention cord! LOL's

Bob

Bob, did ya eat any Deep fried Orieo Cookies, Snicker Bars, or milkyways? God, those are good. When we went to the Strawberry festival this guy was making Deep fried, Orieo cookie/snicker bar/Milkyway ka bobs!:p Talk about a sugar high/ heart attack on a stick!:D:D:D

Good morning.

It's 72 and cloudy. The high will be around 86 and there's a chance of rain.

It looks like today will be a repeat of yesterday. A lot of time in the bed alternately sleeping and watching the TV.

...Build one 50 amp powerpack so I can run 120 N scale locomotives at once, and everybody thinks I've got a nuclear power plant in my backyard...

Hi everyone! We got another very rainy day...not good for playing football with the Arkansas Porkers coming to town today. At least our running game is looking good this year and the pachyderms of the Crimson Tide will prevail.

Lightning: I still haven't seen any places it may have hit. The power company was up and down the street all night. They had two big trucks 1/2 block away working on a pole with automatic power sensing/switching, telemetry antenna, and other whats-its. The next morning, they replaced the transformer across the street from my house, but I'm not on that one. I have to wonder if it was high voltage induced into the line by a near strike or if it actually hit the line and went to ground...well, most of it . What gets me a little nervous is none of the neighbors had any damage. Maybe I should start going to church a little more regular ;). (Just thinking: I may need to put in some more ground rods for the power...hmmmm!)

Jim: The travel trailer was plugged in to get the battery up for our trip this Thursday. Fortunately, everything was off except the TV and DVD's sleep mode. The built-in charger/converter module was on, but seems OK.

Chris: I really appreciated your lightning rod gift. I always wondered what that dangling wire was for. :D

Good mowing weekend got two new accounts! Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!

Rex, no grabbing that wire during a lightin storm or you'll know why Frankinstin was always P.O.ed!

For those who have noticed I've been strangely absent today, I've only been doing what you've been after me to do. I crawled into bed and stayed there. After I get something to eat I'm gonna crawl back into the bed. Y'all have a good one.

About bloody time you did as you are told. Get some more rest and take care of yourself. :D

Afternoon, everyone.

Rex, sure sounds like a direct line strike. I wonder if it could have hit the line drop to your house, especially since you neighbors didn't have any damage. It's even strange that it could fry the TV in the trailer and not damage the charge/converter. You'd think it would take that out first. I think your idea of going to church more often may be a good plan. :) The Tide is up 7-0 in the second but Prattville lost to Don Bosco, one of the top rated teams in the nation, by a 35-24 score. Prattville came back from down 23-0 to get to a 24-23 lead in the fourth but a late pick took the game away from Prattville. Don Bosco is a great team but I'm surprised they played as well as they did since the heat and humidity were brutal last night, something New Jersey teams aren't used to.

I never had elephant ears but I had deep-fried Twinkies once at the Minnesota State Fair. They are supposedly the treat of the Fair and everyone was lined up to get some. One was enough for me. I'd hate to think what my blood sugar would be after wolfing down a bunch of those babies.

Larry, it sounds like elephant ears coated in Splenda is like going to Wendy's and gettting a triple Baconator and a diet coke. :)

Jeffrey, you must really be sick to actually stay in bed. As Andrew said, about time you took some advice and just crashed. I hope you feel better in the morning.

Bob, custom cars and really good Philly steak sandwiches sounds like a great combination to me. Sounds like you must have had a nice fleet back in your car building days. If it makes you feel any better, not only does it take my wife four times longer than me to get ready to leave the house but she always has to stop and pee one more time.

Terry, sounds like you got slammed pretty good too. Lightning can do an amazing amount of damage. When I was a kid, our house got struck and it completely destroyed our brick chimney. Put about a four foot hole through the roof and started a fire that got put out by the rain, thank goodness. My bedroom was right below where we got hit and my ears rang for about two hours afterwards because of the tremendous crash of thunder.

Chris, glad to hear you got some more mowing jobs but I think you should drop the idea of starting a lightning protection business. :D

There's a scraggly line of storms to the west of us that's leading a cold front that should bring us some relief from our oppresive heat and humidity. They've had a lot more rain up north but I doubt we will get much. I'll just be happy with some cooler, drier air. I was trying to glue a plastic sign on a brass pole in the garage last night with CA and it was so humid that the stuff wouldn't work. Stuck my fingers together fine but would not stick anything else together. There's one dippy tropical depression off Africa but it will never survive the combination of cool sea surface temperatures and high wind shear long enough to become a tropical storm. Nothing else, at all, happening in the tropics or even the Gulf. Kind of weird this late in the season.

It's even strange that it could fry the TV in the trailer and not damage the charge/converter. You'd think it would take that out first.
The converter has a secondary ground that goes directly to the frame of the trailer. Also, the battery helps dissipate the excess voltage from a surge. The television and DVD player are plugged directly into the 120 volt system, without the extra ground wire and battery to help regulate the zap. The only other thing that may be affected is the 120 volt heating element for the fridge. If it still cools on 120 volts, it's fine.

Well, it seems I won't have to worry about getting the vaccine for the H1N1 flu strain as I'm most likely developing my own immunity to it. The odds-on guess around here (about 96%) is that's what I have. Looks like I'm looking at the backside of it too.

You should have stayed away from that undercooked pork...
(just kidding)

Evening gang!
Jeffrey, stay in bed, drink plenty of fluids, and for the love of all things holy, stay away from the chili dogs!!! Just because a good chili dog can make you sweat, does not mean that they have any medicinal value at all. :D
Bob, I'm jealous! Custom cars, beer and food goodies sounds like a great time. They only local show around here this year I missed. :( That was the weekend the truck fried a caliper on me (on the way to the show) and spent the next week on jackstands waiting for parts. :(
Ken Geese can be agressive, but you have to be agressive right back to them. My youngest practically beat one senseless with a graphite fishing rod when he was 11 for pecking him on the butt. Later that same day I discovered that when the human hand, wrist, and elbow work in harmony, you can snap the neck of one of these critters pretty easily. That was the last time he ever picked on a small child at the city pond. Jim, its quick, and not as gruesome as a pile of bloody feathers. I just put him in a trashcan. I can just imagine the park workers later dumping the garbage and finding a goose in a can!
Rex Lightning does screwy stuff. We suffered a line strike a few years back. We lost the family room TV, the upstairs computer, that computers surge protector and battery back up unit, a clock radio, a microwave, and a wall mounted air freshener. 2 other TV's and 2 other computers were on at the time and unaffected......wierd eh?
Gotta run for now, either the Mrs has something in her eye, or she's winkin at me!;)
