Good morning. It's 43 and partly cloudy. The high will be around 70 and it should be clear and sunny. The pain from the tooth extraction is almost to the point of not even being noticeable anymore. Had to call Dish Network yesterday to have them send out a tech today to look at my DVR. It's doing some strange and not so wonderful things, like turning off the TV2 mode in the middle of a recording. A couple of times it turned itself off completely then came back on as if nothing had happened. I checked the cord and all the cables and can't find anything wrong there. We'll see what he can come up with.

Who turned off the heat!!!! A nippy 40 this morning. Seemed much colder when I checked the mailbox, though. It's the damp cold, the one that clings to ya and makes it seem MUCH colder.

Train show this weekend in Dayton, Ohio. I was planning to go, but instead am babysitting our critters. Angela's aunt passed away Tuesday, and she went to be with her family. We didn't feel it proper to take the dogs so I got volunteered to stay home. I don't mind, I have had my fill of funerals and funeral homes of late.

She will be home Monday. I told her if she wanted to stay longer I could handle things on the home front. The look I got from her wasn't very conducive to any type of confidence, 'ceptin' NO confidence. What does she think before I met her? I was the ultimate bachelor. I had a nice place, and it was (usually) clean and orderly. But, there was a time after I hosted a Super Bowl Party that it took a week to put back together. But, that's another story. I wonder if those chicken bones are still stuck to the wall behind where I had the TV where Steve tried to drill the ref for makin' that bad call? They were really stuck good. Amazing how much of a mess 16 guys can make at a Super Bowl Party. Andhow much beer they can consume!!!! A couple of them spent the night. No way were they driving home.

Any hoo, I've got most of my chores done, litter boxes emptied, critters fed, dogs let out to do their thing, still gotta do the breakfast dishes. After lunch.

Plan on doing some decals today. I've got 10 engines and some additions to the Christmas trains to get done. I bought all ofthem juat after last Christmas and need to finish them. The new engines are going to be tagged PRR, Wabash, C&Oand Monon. I bought them over the summer, undecorated, and got them all painted. The couple of Wabash F-units were a real bear. I painted them in "Blue Bird" regalia and the masking job was a real challenge. It took days, if not weeks, to get them masked off and ready to paint.

Well, the dogs want out again. Their friend, the neighbor's Staffordshire Terrier, is out playing. Be back later on.

Bob

Jeff, sounds like you and I are going through the same thing. mines on the left side.

SM, were they chikin wings stuck behind the TV? now I want chicken wings. I make the BEST sauce.,......

maybe next week. its my birthday on thursday, I could indulge in wings, champagne, birthday cake....

and a day off. I'll go to the local trainstation and get some photos. it has a certain charm. :)

Looks like a cool afternoon on what has proven so far to be a slow Saturday. It's now up to a pleasant 65 here. I'm currently waiting on a technician from Dish Network to show up. He's supposed to come around some time between noon and 5 pm. With my luck he'll show up at 6:30 when I'm out to dinner with my sister and niece tonight.

Just a quick cup of Joe for me, Flo! How's everyone today? I stopped by the airport this a.m. to watch the planes coming in for the game. Man, it looked like Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta with so many already parked (everywhere) and still coming in about 1-2 miles apart. Hope Bama maintains focus or Tennessee will slip us one up the wrong place. Never know about SEC games.

During the summer and when I was doing computer housekeeping, one of the most valued pieces of advice I received was to get rid of Google , Comcast, and all the other toolbars. The biggest change I saw was after removing Google's: my browser opened twice as fast, no more hangups and erratic operation.

Chris: I bought some GP cleaner for washers at Lowe's. I don't know if that is what you suggested, but it is suppose to be safe for plants and used on everything from the trim to mildly stained brick. Fortunately, the brick on the house is not stained except near the bushes. Have you ever used one of those swirly tips for pressure washing; the kind that rotates and supposed makes it faster to clean large areas? Lowes has them at $99, but I don't want to spend the money on something that is only a gadget.;)

Jim: Yeah, I got tired of not having enough psi for some of those places I wanted to clean of old paint, stain, etc. This one has plenty of zap for heavy cleaning like concrete and not take all day. For more delicate cleaning change the tip and wash vehicles, lawnmowers, siding, etc. BTW: The only thing I have ever done that is more boring than using a pressure washer was years ago and sand blasting. Gads, I would rather ride elevators all day and listen to the "Girl from Ipanema" :D

Time to get the sideline recliner in position and play some serious football. You guys have a Great Day!:)

Yeh, Jeffrey, I have Satellite TV too. All 400 ba-jillion channels. I can only watch two at a time using the picture in picture deal on the TV. So the other 399.98 ba-jillion are useless.

Sounds like you may have a hardware problem or power surges messin' with your DVR. I have line conditioners/surge protecters on all of my electronics, even the old stereos. No more AC hum through the speakers of the old, prehistoric Sansui's, MacIntosh's, Marantz's, and Pioneers any more. Some of the higher powered gear used to hum so loud that you couldn't hear the music.

Looks, and acts, like November here today, cold and wet. It just can't make up its mind whether it wants to rain or blow, so it's doing both. And it's a mighty chilly 46 degrees, though it seems much colder.

ltf, you can have the champagne. There's not enough reason to celebrate getting old that much. Just give me a 6-pack of Coor's Light with the chicken wings and I'll be satisfied. And you can keep the cake. I'd prefer a piece of blueberry or strawberry pie.

I think that you and Jeffrey cursed me. I was eating some Fiddle Faddle and busted a molar just a little while ago. Clear down to the root. This is not gonna be fun.

Well, I should get back to putting decals on these engines. I'd like to get the dullcoat on tomorrow. Then, I can start weathering all of them.

Bob

Yes, thats the stuff and I have used the large ones for driveways and such when I work for Pasco. I have mixed feeling about them, I find P. Washing more often tends to cut the time way down! I P. Wash my house 3 to 4 times a year with the House wash at lowes and follow up with doing the windows with Rain X that day. If you seek something swirly my I sudgest drinking a whole bottle of JD then P. Wash while the World swirls around you!:D:D Much cheaper route and more fun!:p

I used to have that AC hum in my old Sanyo stereo back in the early 80's. I don't have that problem in my trailer. There are surge protectors on every line and a whole house surge protector on the service box, so I would think that the possibility of line surges damaging the DVR would be out. Hardware problems however could very well be the problem. Nothing is made to last anymore. It all breaks down after only 2 to 5 years. That way you have to go back and buy another badly made Chinese made product to replace it.

Just got a call from Dish Network saying that the tech in this area can't make it today and the service call has been rescheduled for tomorrow morning.

Jeff The last time I had issues with 'Rogers' they had a tech down at my place about 1/2 hour after I called---some new tech guy found someone playing with the connections again----we have people who try to do the 'free' thing off others backs I guess---:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Bob Is this busted tooth week or summat?:confused::):) I went to my seminar thing and had 3 people going round with the swollen ace from getting busted/mangled teeth done!!:D:D--thankfully I have not seen any of my snaggled teeth get bust----yet:rolleyes::):);)

I'm kinda lucky in that I never heard odd 60Hz buzzinesses coming out'n my amps or any of that. I use 2 Klipsch II speakers--or ---if'n I'm really cranky 2 EPI 200 watt studio monitor speakers---if I have everything cranked---just a silky silence from everything. Then a few bars of Tony Iommi's opening passage to 'Iron Man' shows up--:D:D:D---I can hear every little thing going on in that record with this set up---:D:D:D

Nice and dull today---of course, we also got 40%'ed on so what else is new--:rolleyes:

:D:D:D:D

Hey Bob the Dayton Train Show is weekend of the 7th and 8th of November. Wanna go. You can park in my drive and I will motivate us there. I am only 3 1/2 miles south of exit 26 off I 69 and 1/3rd mile north of US 36.

Larry,

I'd love to, but, I gotta ask the conductor first. She may have "stuff" for me to do. And she knows better when I "call off sick".

Hopefully, I can get the insurance check before then. If I do, just how big is your vehicle? lol

You wouldn't know anything about the Muncie show would you? That one has always been good to me, too.

Bob

Evening, everyone.

Barry, I told you in the spring to stock your lake with catfish but, would you listen - no. You'd be rolling the dough with your 2,000 pound catfish harvest about now. :)

Chris, I could have really used that hedge trimmer today, since we're having a bunch of people from church over for dinner tomorrow and it was "Clean up the yard or else" day for me. That little Craftsman hedge trimmer is only good for things the size of toothpicks. The dufus who owned the house before us considered himself to be some kind of horticultural expert and planted all kinds of wierd stuff, including some kind of tree thing in the narrow space between the brick wall and and the walk up to our front door. It has little red berries on it and no one here has been able to identify it. They grow about four inches a day and I have to constantly prune them because they grow down over the walk and up into the gutter and soffits. I started on them today again and then I thought, wait a minute, I hate these trees. They are my enemy. In combat, deadly force is authorized, so out came the chain saw. All four are now in the bottom of a gully down the road. I should have done it the second day I moved in. The front of the house looks much better.

LTF, when I got my teeth yanked, it took about a week for the swelling to go down. I hope yours does better. As far as pain pills, I was eating them like candy, but I'm a big wuss :) I have no fear of death but I do fear pain, so bring on the heavy duty narcotics. Happy early birthday to you if you don't get back to Flo's before Thursday.

Jeffrey, it only bottomed out at 52 here so I'm surprised your neck of the woods got so low. It's 52 now and I don't think it will drop much more than into the high 40's tonight. From your description, it sounds like some component in the DVR is failing but only intermittently. Dish was always good with me when I had them. If something started acting up, they didn't even try to troubleshoot it, just gave me a new one. I think those things are really meant to be disposable now.

Bob, sorry to hear about Angela's aunt. I know what you mean about too many funerals. Sorry about the busted molar too. It is kind of funny that wives think we must have been on life support before we met them. ;) I managed to make it just fine on my own, including keeping the house and me reasonably neat. I was married too young for wild super bowl parties but it sounds like they must have been fun if you were drunk enough.

Rex, the first "real" job I got when I was still in high school was in a machine shop. I had to sandblast 1500 pipes that were going for some Navy contract. It was summer, no air conditioning, and the the gloves that stick into the sand blasting booth had holes in them. It was that summer that convinced me that getting better grades and going to college was a good idea. :D The Tide almost blew what should have been an easy game. As you said, they have to keep focus for every game, and I don't think it was there today. Thank goodness for that monster we have that can block field goals.

Whew, I'm tired. After all the yard work, I had to clean the basement and get the layout in presentable shape since some of the guys coming over want to see it. Everything ran fine this afternoon. By tomorrow, I expect that half of everything will suffer from some mysterious malady like what's attacking Jeff's DVR. It never fails the few times I have anyone look at the layout. The tropics have now gone back to sleep. 95L couldn't escape the dry air and it's being absorbed by the cold front that went through here. Nothing on the horizon looks threatening. It's still nine days before we leave for our cruise so I expect a monster storm to develop out of nowhere about eight days from now.

BTW, is anyone else nervous about the "National Health Emergency" proclamation that was signed "late" last night?

We're expecting mid 40's for the low tonight and low to mid 70's for the high tomorrow along with a chance of rain.

Evening All!

What a beatiful day! High was 65....but Jim...tonight we get down to 29. 38with snow tomorrow and back up to the mid 50's Monday  Never boring here in Colorado.

Jeffrey...glad you are feeling better. I am sure you are 'sick' of doctors!

Bob...sorry to hear about your wife's aunt. It does seem that you have had way too many funerals of late.

LT...bless you for watching over those special horses. I have never spent much time around horses, but I do love animals and appreciate folks with that special place in their hearts for them. Hope your mouth gets to feeling better!

Rex...Are you sore today from all your power washing? My brother used to do that as a side job and it would wear him out!

Spent the day with my S-I-L and my niece picking out my niece's wedding dress, doing the cake tasting and choosing invitations. Had a great time. Courtney, my niece is just the sweetest girl and is beautiful. I'll attach a photo or two of our day.

Have a good evening!

Sandy

Evening yall,

LTF - been awhile, welcome back. Sorry you had to get that dental surgery done. Kudos for saving the life of that horse.

Looks like a lot of you are suffering from the Tooth Blues. I know that all too well, that's why I stay away from things like rock candy and "salt water" taffy.

Jim my wife's also a would-be horticulturist, she gets all these weird trees and just plunks them down in random spots that make it very tricky for me to mow the grass. Like 40" from the side of the house, very hard to fit my 42" ZTR in there. Drives me nuts, but I just quietly endure it to keep the peace

Been pretty wet around here today. Should have been perfect mrr weather, but I'm so distracted about the impending surgery on my layout that I can't get much enjoyment from running trains on it as it is now. My friend who's dreamed up a duck-free track plan is currently out of town and won't be back until Tuesday at the earliest, possibly Wednesday. I really want to see that design so I'll feel motivated to start the preliminary garage renovations. This business of just waiting gets old fast...

[EDIT:] Sandy - you came in just ahead of me, didn't see you at first. You do indeed have a very attractive niece, her husband-to-be is one lucky fella! Are you one of the two women in that center photo?

Sandy, a wedding dress with pockets? Now, I've seen everything!!!! And I'm not married. We've been together for 16 years, an does seem like we are. But, she's Catholic and since I've been married before, I'm a heathen in the eyes of the church. But, she's a good girl and a keeper. Farm raised in Ohio. And can she ever cook!!!! WOW!!!!

Jim and ken, if your wives need lessons on raising trees and flowers, Angela is the one to talk to about that. I'll have to get some pics of her flower beds next season. Not only are the big they are absolutely gorgeous. Just like popcorn, something is always popping up new and a different color I let her plant all the beds she wants. The more she has the less I have to mow. I ain't as dumb as I look. Just don't tell her my thinkin' on all of the beds. The worst part of all of them is the raised beds. It's my back stacking the stones and mortaring them into place.

Jim, with the declaration of a "national emergency", the president is a short hop from being able to declare martial law. Scary. I don't believe that H1N1 is that serious a problem. It seems that there are more problems with the reactions of the vaccine than the disease. It has been said that the cure can sometimes be worse than the disease. May be the case here. I'm staying away from the shot. Doctor is enough skeptical to give me confidence in my decision. When I asked him if he was going to get it, he said, "Nope." That was enough for me.

Bob

Jeffrey, it's 49 here now with a dewpoint of 43 so 43 should be as low as we can get. I think 45 will be the likely low. Supposed to get up into the 70's here tomorrow also after a cloudy high of 62 today.

Sandy, that's one good thing about Denver. If you don't like the weather today, just wait until tomorrow. Of course, the reverse is also true. :) Your niece really is beautiful. She looks like a model in that wedding dress. I've never seen one with pockets either. Whoever the other woman is in the photo doesn't look half bad either. :D

Ken, Dianna doesn't ever expose herself to direct sunlight if she can help it. I do all the planting and yard work. It's the goofball that owned the house before us that's caused me the problems. At least four of them are gone now. I think he and your wife would have gotten along though. His idea was, if one plant is good, a whole bunch of them in the same place is better. We have a tree down here called a water oak. I think they range up into Maryland too. It's not a very attractive tree because it grows in an irregular shape, the leaves just turn brown and drop off in the fall, and the limbs break off easily. This guy decided to plant three in the front yard, all within a couple feet of each other. They are fast growers, so I now have three big, ugly trees that have interwound themselves. I'd like to get at least two of them taken out but a guy I called to look a them said the root balls have grown together and it's either all or none. They do give nice shade in the summer so I hate to take them out but every mild bout of wind leaves a bunch of broken limbs all over the lawn that yours truly has to pick up.

Bob, have you investigated getting your previous marriage annuled in the eyes of the Catholic Church? It's commonly done now for the smallest of reasons to allow Catholics to marry a divorced person. It just take some money to the bishop of the diocese and appearing before a Church Court to get it done. The Church had to come up with something because they were losing too many divorced members.

Sounds like Angela really enjoys here flowers. I used to have a bunch of raised beds in California and enjoyed planting flowers but it's tough with the Alabama heat and humidity get many things to last out the summer without a lot of watering. My late wife liked planting flowers too and, like you, the more flowers, the less lawn to take care of. :D

I wouldn't say the National Health Emergency declaration is the next step to martial law, but it is certainly headed in that direction. It gives the HHS secretary sweeping powers to modify how and where hospitals can give care, close any public or private venues to prevent spread of disease, and to essentially draft any medical professional to "temporary" public duty to assist with treating patients if the exisitng system is overwhelmed. Since I'm still in the national registry of paramedics, I would be subject to this involuntary servitude, and I could be sent anywhere in the country for the duration. I don't think this subject is political in terms of the current administration, since the law was passed under the former president. It's yet another erosion of our civil and constitutional rights that any citizen should be informed of and understand. The fact that it's being done in the face of a very mild (although widespread) outbreak of influenza is alarming. The total number of people who have died from the H1N1 virus this year is somewhere around 1000 - no one knows the actual number because the government no longer tries to confirm that the cause of death was H1N1. They just assume it was with the right set of symptoms. By contrast, the death rate from the normal round of seasonal influenzas, even with more and more people getting flu shots, is usually about 30,000. So what makes this a critical pandemic compared to a normal flu season? The whole thing just doesn't pass the sniff test.

I would certainly not get an H1N1 vaccine unless I was in a known high risk group. It's very poorly tested, no matter what the CDC tries to palm off on the public. There's absolutely no reason for anyone over 50 to get it, again assumig you're not in a known high risk group, since us old folks have been exposed to enough different influenzas over our lifetimes that we already have some immunity. Younger people are being more affected because there hasn't been an influenza outbreak that was both serious and widespread since 1982. People born after that date have no natural immunity to the H1N1 virus. Vaccination is tough call to make for younger people, since the number deaths per thousand of people apparently getting H1N1 is still lower than any of the more typical types of influenza. You have to balance the risk of being one of the tiny minority of people that will be seriously affected compared to the risk of the vaccine. Anyone who thinks vaccines that are minimally tested and rushed into production are safe should read the history of the 1976 swine flu "pandemic". The vaccine was rushed into production by a panicked government, which predicted hundreds of thousands of deaths. In reality, the swine flu never became a pandemic, with less than 25 recorded deaths. The vaccine, however, did cause at least 500 deaths, and many who did not die developed Guillain–Barré syndrome, a serious and life threatening disease itself, that leaves 5%-15% of the survivors with life-long disabilities. Since there's some evidence that the normal seasonal flu vaccine provides some protection against H1N1, my 19 and 22 year old daughters have gotten their regular flu shots but I've told them of the risks involved with a vaccine with no history, and left it up to their judgement if they want to get it, assuming enough is actually produced to make it widely available. There's nowhere near enough available now.

Good Morning--

Got church to go to this morning then the weekend seminar thing to do this afternoon---then be finished in the evening---sheeesh, busy weekends:D
--

Jim I thought that the measure sounded a bit overwrought. The way the media play things up you'd think the we're all gonna die!!! bunch were in full control----next they'd be shutting the borders and closing everything and ----yada yada. Basically though it is as said. Dragging all and sundry to work where ever they are needed at a specific time/place. So much fun---:rolleyes:

Good morning. It's 47 and clear. The high is expected to be in the mid 70's with some clouds. The Dish Network service call yesterday was rescheduled due to the tech having a family emergency, something with which I can identify. He's now scheduled to show up sometime this morning between 9 and noon. If he has to change out the DVR unit I'll most likely lose the programs stored in it. If so I'll just have to record others and hope I can catch some reruns.
