Well, the new roof is almost completed. What I was not told until dusk yesterday is that the roofing supplier was out of the ridge shingles in our color! Not happy. The roofer said that he would pick them up today and finish it. It took six (actually five since the foreman spent most of his time in his truck talking/texting on the phone), 9.5 hours to do it all including cleanup. The owner who was over on a different job with another crew, had to bring out 3 additional sheets of decking so that they could replace 8 all together. All were along the edge and I knew about 5 before they started. Overall I am satisfied except for the lack of communication on the ridge shingles.
Not much brings as much peace of mind as a new roof!

As an independent crane operator, I had the "pleasure" of working with many roofing foremen. Some are the most skilled and hardest workers. Others are just there to handle problems and get paid. I knew one that surfed porn on his phone all day and this was in the late 90s! I can't imagine what his phone bill was. The company was footing the bill. One thing I know for certain, if the foreman doesn't do his part everybody else has to pick up the slack. Nobody likes a lazy foreman. I can also say professional roofers are some of the best workers I have ever seen.

I worked with another foreman who had a unique way of dealing with slackers. He would tell them "Statistics show that slackers often have accidents and fall off the roof" You won't find many slackers working on a roof.

How many squares is your roof? A crew that size can handle 8-12 squares in 9.5 hours. There are other factors than size, the deck for example in your case.

Regardless, I'm happy to hear you have a new roof!

I decided to have 401k plan with my first truck driving company since the were offering it. After a while in early 2000s there was some kind of "crash". Went to check on it only to find out the amount was half of that from previous month. Decided to withdraw everything and close 401k permanently. Money became useful on a down payment for a car. Never looked back.
That was a great opportunity to stay in and buy stocks on the low. It came roaring back and them some within a few years.

It's 16.5 squares. And that included taking two layers of old roof off. The pitch is an easy 3:6, since we don't have to worry about excessive snowfall here. These guys are good, I could tell that they had worked together as a team for quite a while. As a side benefit, I got to practice my Spanish which has gotten a bit rusty since retiring.

Good morning Crew. I was so disappointed that our kids took such different paths than what we had hoped for. But it all has worked out alright. We never had a ā€œplanā€ for them but the way they got to where they are now sure was rough traveling. Neither would let us help out!

Walthers is having a 15 days of sales event. A different daily sales code for specific products. Today it is Walthers Mainline bulkhead and flat cars. Type the code FLAT23 in at checkout and the price goes from $34+ to $19.98 each. I tried but itā€™s only giving me a total of $5 off each car. So either I not buy or I call them. But their customer service group no longer is based in Milwaukee but off shore somewhere and IMO hopeless.

The son just texted, his assistant was Covid positive Tuesday but heā€™s been negative. Today he tested and is positive heading to a walk in clinic and he is not a happy camper!

enjoy the day

The mention of sauerkraut. Dawn does not like any types of German food? No matter what, it is not allowed in the house. I, on the other hand, love it.. (I eat it whenever we are on holiday and is available.) She will eat any other nationality type of food except Japanese.

She better not come to my house (though she'd be welcome). We eat a lot of asian and Japanese food and I love German food and often make my own variations...

Speaking of cuisine, my top two generic are Asian (not including Japanese -- nothing wrong with Japanese but it doesn't fit the general Asian mold of spicy and pikant etc) and Mexican/S American.

German, Italian, Japanese, etc are good runners up as well as home style American food / comfort food and stuff like a good steak or burger.

MEL - for me please: Sauerkraut with three Nathan's dogs on top and Dijon mustard!
After seeing this I told my wife "I'm making dinner"

Aldi all meat jumbo hotdogs, boiled, they are excellent! A can of Aldi's brand sauerkraut and Resser's Deviled Egg Potato salad. I went all out and heated the sauerkraut in the microwave!

I ate four hotdogs, (1/2lb total) no bread or rolls and the best part of the can of sauerkraut. With yellow mustard. I had no room left for potato salad. The can of sauerkraut is gone!

Thank you, God, for my wife who puts up with me.

Problem is i don't understand much about it, and one has to stay on top of it, constantly checking. I neither have the time or patience for it.

Typically most 401K have a menu of funds you can choose from and I just pick the funds (across a range industries/styles) and park the money and hardly ever look. The wife's 401k does allow you to set up a DIY account and manage individual stocks, etfs, funds as you please. So 50% of her 401k money goes into that and I manage it and 50% goes into the menu of funds they've selected and I hardly ever go look.

Same with my 401k. I just have a distirbution set up across funds so X% or Y% of each contribution goes into a certain fund and I don't botehr to look again that often. It's not worth the hassle and with most 401k programs you only have between a 1/2 dozen and a few dozen funds to chose from and they will switch or change out underperforming funds usually (in my experience) so as long as you set up the funds range you like it will "self manage". Unless it is a la carte DIY like the wife's 50%. That I look at regularly though I mostly just buy. I try and load up on high dividend payers, preferably monthly, so that constant extra money flows in no matter what the market is like though I have other ones as well.

Unless he has some special condition if I were him I just stay home a few days, lots of rest, water, VitC, VitD, etc and wait it out. No reason to freak out. I wouldn't even bother testing. If you feel sick, stay home, get rest and nutrition and liquids and wait it out.

Thanks @TLOC the price for the Walthers Mainline cars went from the sale prices of $22.99 to $7.99. Pretty good deal for any car these days.

Speaking of Sauerkraut:

The wife is out shopping (today is her day off) and she wanted to know if Costco normally carried Sauerkraut. When she asked I had to laugh because of this thread here.

And also the website Olive My Pickle, https://www.olivemypickle.com, makes naturally fermented products and makes a bunch of really good krauts. The problem with the major store brands is they are all usually pasteurized and no longer active so the fermentation by products and bacteria are not there or they they cheat, like with pickles, and don't really ferment them properly. Naturally fermented foods are super good for you. The problem with this website is that they're not cheap. We bought a bunch of pickles, olives, krauts, and kimchi and liked them all but it was an expensive box.

Louis I worked with a lot of crane operators in my 25 years of working on high rise building. After stripping the wood forms the floors are a mess with stringers and other construction debris everywhere and one day some chokers got mixed up 10 footers and 20 footers. Their always in a hurry to get the load up to the next floor and the chokers get all curled up after time so you can tell what length they are. I had a 10 footer and 20 footer in my hand without knowing it. When they lifted the load, it went down. Into the safety nets thank God. I thought why aren't these chokers color coded. After that I knew enough tie one end down and stretch it out to get it's true length.
