Afternoon All,

Currently 79F and slightly breezy (very comfortable). I'm starting back to walking in the morning. Today MOH, daughter and youngest grandson made a bunch of different cookies, fudge and gingerbread. My favorite are molasses cookies. 😍 It's a good thing they only get made 1-2 times a year.

All this talk about computers and language and all I hear is blah, blah, blah.:D I don't understand any of it.

Patrick- The local BK is going through the same thing.

Karl- That tire blew at the perfect time.

Alan- 2 nice videos and great photo of the BL.

Joe- It's a shame Navy wasn't on the field the first 3 quarters but congrats to ARMY.

Tom- I'm glad you are feeling better.

Sherrel- Awesome photo. That grime on everything is really hard to model realistically. I hope you feel better.

TomO- Enjoy your trip.

Smudge- Interesting video.

Mac- Great photos and videos. Love the trestle photo.

migalyto- Those look yummy.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Too bad your dad didn't appreciate those steamers. They're "obscure" to most non Northern Pacific fans i suppose. I my self just started dipping my fingers into NP and GN steam in the area. Being in the area this past vacation has definitely motivated me to get to know about the local mountain power back in the day.View attachment 177876
Curved trestle near Butte on Northern Pacific.
Do you have copies of Frey and Shrenk's NP books? Probably the best information on NP steam, maybe diesel too but I never did buy that one.

Good evening. I'm back home now. The rain stopped what we were doing, which was cleaning a friend's RV after she passed away in it, and was there for several days before she was discovered. And the power company turned off power after her body was removed, and we weren't allowed inside to get rid of the food in the fridge, or anything else that could spoil, so I'm sure y'all know how that mess smelled, and why we left after the rain forced us to close all the windows and vents.
We did get the worst of it, and will probably get together next weekend to finish.

This is the only book i have on Northern Pacific so far:

Pretty old copy, but the basic history is shown and there is a section on steam power for newbies like me. I already have a favorite NP steam.

Among other things, she was one of the initial creators of what became COBOL programming.
For those that aren't computer geeks, COBOL i9s still in use today.
Obviously, her specialty was computer science.

I believe she also coined the term "bug". She also joined the company, which I worked for, as a Principal Corporate Consulting Engineer (SVP level type position) full time after her retirement from the Navy. The company was Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). She worked there until she died.

(My father had gotten a job there in 76 when I was 10 and that is the reason we moved from Arizona, where I was born and had grown up until them to Massachusetts, where I went to school from grade 5 through HS and spent a few more years, and later went back to NH, about 20 miles north of where I was in Mass, for another almost 5 years). And I worked there two summers after high school as a night operator and later full time as an Information Systems Specialist Programmer (non engineering Software Engineer type position), both in New Hampshire and Munich)

MLB free agency 2023: Shohei Ohtani joins Dodgers on reported 10-year, $700M deal

Not that I really care about MLB at all, but at least it wasn't the Yankees. Had hoped the Red Sox might land him but had no real expectations (nor actual caring about it -- my wife is more a fan, and of him, and whatever team he is on).

MLB hasn't seen a talent like Ohtani since Babe Ruth. I only hope he can fully recover from the elbow injury and pitch again.

We had nice weather (up into the 50s) last week but it got colder and snowed on Thursday some and Friday. Was colder this weekend but still hit around 40. Suppose to warm up a slight amount this week.

The siding guys came bac on Thursday (they had been sick) and between Thursday and Friday got the main back wall (west wall) done as well as fnished up the south wall battens. Friday the power company shut off service and the electricians moved the main service box up to where it should have been (for post grade work) and after that the siding guys got it all sided all the way to the end of the wall. The pic of the box belowe shows post electrical service work but before the siding guys got going.

They also wrapped the add-on sun room which was framed in with house wrap. My son and I used a variety of sticky high end flashing tape to tape all the door openings but those aren't in the pic. Friday the drywall guys showed up. They were supposed to be there Friday and when I got there about 10am to get ready for the countertop guy, the drywall guys weren't there yet. Sometime between 10:30 and 11am they rolled in, unpacked their tools and gear, blocked off all the garage openings with plastic sheet and OSB sheets, got their heater running, and made an impromptu table from a sheet of drywall and the plumbers tool storage box in the garage and took out some hot plates, their tortillas and taco/taquito fixings, and had lunch. Then, while one of them set up they played a round or two of cards (some game I didn't know) with $1 bets. After their lunch break they finally got started and were very efficient and got most of the long garage done before they stopped and left around 5pm. They'll finish the garage tomorrow and and get started inside. They were a merry bunch, and shared their lunch with me and had their "south of the border" music playing the whole time. I didn't ask where they were from but I assume Mexico. (We've had Columbians, Hondurans, and other Central and South American countries represented in the various trades workforces that have been here).

The countertop guy came. As I mentioned previously we had set up the cabinets for him. He warned me that since the cabinets were not yet placed after drywall, even though we placed them all exactly as they will be but against the studs, that they couldn't be responsible for issues that arose from variations introduced intlo the system from the drywalling process. I said I would take responsibility but that due to delays by other trades earlier this year and the accumulated time deficits we had to work with what we had. Now I need to tell them the couner/cabinet area needs to be drywalled first so we can get the cabinets installed first while they work with the rest of the house. We don't really need mud/taping except under the overhang and the edges of each wall since they'll be completely covered by cabinets and the backsplash/wall covering we are doing (FRP panels). He was a nice guy and did it. I didn't realize they actually use Luan wood slats to build a life size template on top of the cabinets and take that with them to use as the cutting template on the quartz.

Lots of things going on Friday (drywall, siding, countertops, electrical) and Sastyurdxay the guy piping the heating system was there finishing off. I need to wire in the 24V transformers used to drive certain parts, as well as some controller boxes and add the breakers and stuff needed for the heating and he will come back and fill the radiant pipes and we'll be able to fire up the boiler to drive the heat in the house until the heat pump gets done. I also heard that the driller is wrapping up where he's been at the last 6-7 weeks, to come and do mine, while they figure out how to finish that other job. The ground is just not suited for deep well sgafts -- using way way too much drilling mud and whatever they use for that and unable to get more than 1 of the 4 shafts to the 300' they need. Mine are only going 230' or something like that and hopefully our ground is not like where they've been at and cooperates with what they're doing.

My son and I also cut some wood to slightly narrow the garage opening to fit an 18' 2" door instead of needing an 20' door cut down to about 18' 4-6". We brought it in 3/4" and the siding guys will add 5/4 (1") trim into the opening to bring it in another inch. Save $2k in garage door costs.

We've also been using left over foam sheets / floor insulation / etc to fill in the wall cavities around the the bedrooms to provide some sound dampening (make the bedrooms quieter), My son did his whole room. I've almost finished doing the daughters room up to about 8' (I'm not doing all 18-20' of the wall height). Then the master bedroom walls will be foam sheeted in...

As I mentioned earlier the add-on sunroom enclosed patio was framed in last week on Monday. But I forgot to tell them about where the electric fireplace is supposed to be so they didn't leave that opening. I will have to cut that out and fix it. The inspector told me not to tell him and that he'd already inspected it and that was that (since it was not structural where it is supposed to be).

Good morning. It's clear and 49.
I purchased a trio of Kato locomotives and Micro-Trains couplers from MB Klein on Friday, since the engines were priced extremely well. Yesterday evening, I was notified they had shipped.
The Whitcomb I ordered last Monday is still "awaiting fulfillment".

Not that I care about MLB either, I have three Christmas ornaments in Yankees kit/colours. I gotta support them. ;)🤣
How I stop supporting the Yankees. I did not like the fact that 3 Yankees choose not to speak with me back in 1955 but I still rooted for them up until about 10 years ago. My wife and I went to a Yankee game starting at 12:30 pm. It was lightly raining. The game was still in rain delay at 5pm which I decided we had enough, and we left. The game was now in rain delay 4 and 1/2 hours and they did not say anything over the intercom system in all that time. We got home around 6pm and the game was still in rain delay. The game finally got started at 730:pm. I called the Yankees and told them I wanted my $200.00 back because you can't put a game in rain delay for 7 hours. They told me they would give me 1/2 off on 2 $50.00 upper deck seats. I said, no thanks I just won't go to or watch another Yankee game. 2 years ago, one of my golf friends talked me into to watching them again but when they all took the knee in a preseason game I did the Elon Musk thing and haven't watch a game since.

Good morning all.

Last night Dawn and I were talking of the old house we lived in. The log fires at Christmas.

Oh I love a log fire. Our old house was the one to burn logs.

Starting the day collecting the logs from the store in the old stable whilst Dawn started the fire going. Once alight I had the joyful job of putting logs on the fire through the day.

Days around Christmas were best. The decorations were up. Christmas trees in each room; real trees off course. Lights and more lights. Over the top some would say, but Dawn loves loads of decorations. Music is playing on the radio; Christmas music naturally.

It is evening, snow is falling, logs burn, the Christmas lights are twinkling. Our son has roasted some chestnuts, our daughter has made some broth. Settle down and tales being told. Stories handed down, of 1947, and of recent times. Dawn would open a bottle of sherry or port. A few snacks on a plate. All the time logs were added to the fire.

Morning all,

27° and clear this morning, high later of 55°. Bedroom mostly finished yesterday. We still have some things we need move in, but the upstairs is done. Only took me 9 months.

$700 million contract is one of the reasons I don't partake in professional sports any longer. none of them are worth what they are getting paid IMO.

Here's a sound for the season:
