Running Bear's Coffee Shop LVII

Just checking in,
Doing last minute stuff, getting ready for our little Cannonball Run coming up this weekend. Finksburg MD to Waynesville Mo and back in 60 hours. Should be fun! Thank goodness the car is a rental! Still not sure if we will take Rt 70 most of the way, or take the southern route via Rt 64.
Speaking of the rental, we pick it up tomorrow night. The local Enterprise office is getting me a Chrysler Mini van for the trip. Not my favorite ride, but half the cost of renting a Tahoe!

Karl if you need the cargo space and you only have 1 passenger would you like to use my new Chevy City Express LT?

Talking about rental vehicles; while my New Chevy van was being detailed they gave me a 2016 Impala to use for free, they even picked up the cost of the fuel! That Impala runs like a bat out of hell! I wanted to see what it could do and put my foot down nearly to the floor and it took off like a rocket ship. I was so busy watching the road be gobbled up I did not want to take my eyes away to see the speedometer. I was waiting for the wings to deploy and take flight. What was Chevy thinking? Where can you drive a car that fast?!

I can't help you with that route, but I'll ask Saint Christopher to look out for you.

Good morning Everybody!

It's 70 with 85% humidity under cloudy skies in southeast Baltimore.

I spent the morning at the Koon's Chevy again. This time with my son and his wife. My son is smart and thoughtful, he traded his 2013 Camaro in for this 2017 Chevy Equinox it makes much more sense for a married man.
2017-chevrolet-equinox.jpg

This thing is loaded with bells and whistles, so many that he keeps finding news ones. It's good for him and his wife because they like that stuff.

It looks like a satellite Chevy dealership in front of my house now.

Have a great day Everybody!

Louis, my Impala was electronically limited to 112mph. When it reached that speed, a chime would come on, and a message would be shown on the instrument panel to that effect, and the car would stop accelerating, no matter how hard the gas pedal was pressed.

Terry you are a better man than me, at 112mph I would not be taking my eyes off the road to see anything on the dash. With all the traffic and idiot drivers in Baltimore it's not possible to drive that fast safely, in my mind at least. I seldom get over 70mph.

I had a 1978 cougar with a 302 balanced and bored 10 over, 11-1 pistons, RV cam, headers and custom dual exhaust, Ford motor sport high rise manifold and holly 4 barrel. That v-6 impala was faster! Either that or I am getting old and it just seemed faster.

I am super impressed with those Impalas; super fast, great interior and comfort. I never did figure out what half of the touch screen could do. My wife was teasing me for only using the buttons and knobs. She said "It has a touch screen honey" I said "I know, but I don't know how to use it, I just want to listen to NPR!"

Good Morning All. 72° and clear with no wind today. Made it up to 96° yesterday. Hoping to relax in the train shed today, as I spent 5 hours yesterday running "Willie" errands. Covered 106 miles (52 of which are under construction!) and made 8 stops; including Radio Shack, Home Depot, gas station, Discount Model Railroad, and Dollar General for some new reading glasses. Visited some old acquaintances at two stops where I used to work and picked up a reel of 18 gauge wire that I had previously ordered. At Discount, I purchased 10 CI ground throws, a couple of non-industrial structures and a trailer that I am going to decal for the beverage distributor. I'd love to go into that place with Bill Gates bank account.
Thanks for all of the comments on my industrial park, Joe, Garry, Chet, Curt, David, Ken and anyone else that I may have missed.
Corey - Good to hear from you again. Keep with the program, it's for you, not anyone else.
Chet - I know that it will all come together at some point. Some areas are already completed and I am still hitting some random spots while I wait for glue/paint to dry on the current set of projects. I have about 60' of track that's painted and ready for ballast elsewhere that I work on about 3' at a time. I'm mostly just in a layout planning/structure building mood right now.
Joe - Keep those prototype pictures coming. That big hook one was pretty fascinating.
Curt - Yes the building is insulated both walls and ceiling. The inside walls and ceiling are "crude", just 3/8" plywood that is painted blue for a simple backdrop. Some green on horizons where I have gotten to it. I have an 18,000 BTU window A/C that keeps it comfortable (less than 80°) during the summer; I run it from 10 am until 8 pm, the insulation keeps it cool overnight. During winter there are two small heaters, but I usually only run one of them.
Karl - Have a safe trip.

Amid all of the activity yesterday, I forgot to post the additional pictures of the beverage distributor that I promised, so here they are.

This last one is a picture of all eight of the air conditioner/refrigeration units that came in the Cornerstone kit, before I painted any of them.

That's it for now, everybody have a great day.

Howdy everybody.

Willie ... The beverage distributor is looking very nice.
Curt .. I'll let you know more. We'll be in Orlando briefly starting with the Oct 8. Give Phil a heads up. ... I hope I can squeeze in a little time as I did when we were there early last year.
Cory ... We care about you.
Chet ... I like your before an after photos.
Louis ... I think your son and his wife made a wise decision.

..... Here is a photo where you can see how my large flour mill wraps around a corner of the room.

Good morning. 45 degrees to start off the day with scattered clouds. Must have had a shower not too long ago as I had water beaded up on the car.

Joe - Nice photo. Love electrics, but this one is a bit more modern. I was hoping to do some rail fanning out east on our road trip, but being that we couldn't get any decent seats at the Dover, DE track we decided to pass on the trip. We were thinking of taking a day trip on the high speed trains in the north east corridor along with visiting a few of the hobby shops such as MB Klien, but there's always another time.

Louis - I can relate to your experience with the Impala. When we went to the National Bowling tournaments last summer, we rented a large SUV and ended up with a new Chevy Suburban which had every possible bell and whistle on it. My buddy and I split the driving, and the one who was not driving operated the numerous electronic gadgets. He happens to own a new Impala and he does admit that he really dislikes the lack of buttons and switches in the Impala. His wife hates the car because of the touch screen. You have to take your eyes off of the road too long to do what would be a simple operation with conventional controls. When I was in Daytona last spring the Ford Fusion I had was also a pain. Being alone, I found myself pulling off of the road and stopping to peck through the touch screen to do what would have been a minor task with buttons and switches. In the suburban it wasn't bad because the passenger could operate the touch screen. I have totally given up on buying a new vehicle because of all of the technology that auto makers are putting into cars that are new standard in just about all new vehicles that I really have no use for but am expected to pay for. I am lucky that I probably have enough vehicles to drive that will mot likely be around long after I croak.

Willie - You should post more phots of what you have completed. I really enjoy them. Nice photos.

Garry - Speaking of photos, you sure posted a winner today. Sweet.

Guess I'll post one and get out of here. A heavy Mike crossing the Gallatin River.

Good morning, 64°, still cloudy.

Joe - Keep those prototype pictures coming. That big hook one was pretty fascinating.

Willie: What was more fascinating, was how the derrick was rerailed. However, there were no photos taken of that operation.

Garry: Clever wraparound with the flour mill. Good thinking.

Louis: The Impala is a great car, with a lot of power. The Equinox doesn't look bad either. Nothing wrong with having a fleet of Chevys around.

Taken by WJ McCurdy in 1972 or 1973, the Electric Locomotive Shop at Wilmington, DE, then still under the Penn Central. It was truly amazing what was accomplished in this building. Note the small details.

Morning Everyone! It's 68 headed to 82, I believe. Put this in your almanac! It rained a pretty slow, steady rain yesterday for most of the afternoon. First moisture we have seen in over 130 days!

JOE - Louis , I'm sure, is drooling all over himself with that last picture - me too!

WILLIE - Nice looking build you have going there. I agree with Chet - more pictures!

GARRY .. You have been holding out! That is one AWESOME picture!

KARL .. Safe travels, drive defensively!

COREY -Good to see you back - take care of yourself.

CURT - If I failed to comment - YOUR trailers and flats look really good!

OK, GUYS - No surgery at this time. Yesterday was a scan and an esophagogram which will be sent to specialist vascular doctors somewhere in LA where I will have to go IF I have surgery on the aneurism. By the time I returned home from the tests yesterday, I have never been more sick in my life. I had to drink about three pints of some god-awful-tasting stuff from a straw while the test was in progress. Needless to say - I did not make it from the car into the house before the explosion happened. I don't want to say anymore .. but spent most of the day in the bathroom.
I certainly PRAY that none of you ever have to experience that.
Please be advised that I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your thoughts and well wishes!

I'm at a very low point in my life and I don't know if I have the strength to continue on since hearing of Brad and Angelina's divorce. I may not be able to work my way out of this one.

I hope nothing bad happens with the Kardashians now...

My life hasn't been the same since the Liz and Dick split. Always disappointed that she didn't seek me out!

Reminds me of something I saw yesterday on Fox News, someone did a "person on the street" Q&A on a northeastern college campus. Here are the questions and results:
1) Who is the Vice President? 0/5
2) Who did we win our independence from? 0/5
3) When did we declare our independence? 0/5
4) Who won the Civil War? 0/5 - Although one responder said "the Confederates".
5) Who are Brad & Angelina? 5/5
6) Who was Brad's ex? 5/5

This is a college campus of today!

Afternoon All,

Did a couple of outside chores today before the temperature reached the melt setting. Tomorrow I'm heading up to Jon's and Phil should be there:D. Today MRR wise I painted the trim and window frames for the weigh station. The roof will be black, The trim is dark green and the walls will be gray. I also painted the wood flooring that surrounds the track. When I mount the structure on the base I will add a couple of people inside and put a light in it.

Joe- Great photo of the Shop. That is a nice looking loco. I believe one of the guys at the club has a HO version of it.

Eric- I'm glad you are getting reacquainted with your old friends.

Willie- Excellent modeling in the pictures.

Garry- Very nicely done with the flour mill. I will talk to Phil tomorrow about your upcoming trip.

Chet- Very nice bridge and photo perspective.

Sherrel- Good one. With everything going on in this country and the world it amazes me how anyone could possibly care about them. Just 2 more overpaid prima donnas that think their views and morals are better than mere mortals.

I hope everyone has a good night.
