New freight engine from Rapido trains

I guess a GMD-1 is sort of a switcher and sort of a road engine. It was originally designed to run on the light rail of Canadian prarie branchlines. Only Canadian national and Northern Alberta railways bought them.

They also originally had an unusual wheel arangement, a six wheel truck with the middle axle "unpowered".
This was designed to spread the weight out over the light rail as Glen pointed out. These were later replaced with four axle trucks to put more weight on the driving axles.
Wonder which version will be produced, I'll bet the six axle jobbie!

From the video I would guess all versions will be produced both a-1-a and B-B tucks. I wonder if they'll make the real odd-balls, the originals from 1959 with B-B trucks and steam Gens

The GMD GMD1 was a diesel locomotive produced by General Motors Diesel (GMD), the Canadian subsidiary of General Motors Electro-Motive Division, between August 1958 and April 1960.

This switcher locomotive was powered by a 12-cylinder EMD 567C diesel engine, capable of producing 1,200 horsepower.

The GMD1 was built on either flexicoil A1A-A1A or flexicoil B-B trucks. 101 examples of this locomotive were built for Canadian railways. 96 went to Canadian National Railway and the remaining 5 went to Northern Alberta Railways

Second Hand Users

A number of GMD-1 were sold in the 1990s, including a few were acquired by Ferrocarriles de Cuba.

I'd much rather see the RS23 behind 1423 get put into production. I know a lot of people looking for those.

They should have done this one:

Not to worry. Here's a link to a nice page with plenty of pics of a Rail Link GMD-1, amongst other things:

Here's one in Ohio:

And more in Akansas, of all places! (note one has same number as above, 1155):

The American GMD-1's have the 4 wheeled trucks. Also I see a Sinclair radio aerial on 1155.

Here's a list of uses with pics.

[edit] had to add thin link: here's one with both truck types (in Cuba):

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. It does have a certain homliness but it is a uniquely Canadian Locomotive and that is what gives it it's appeal to those of us North of the 41st parallel. I'm not sure about a deposit since the Canadian was an entire train worth much more than a single loco.

I have to say I was hoping the "New" unit was going to be an RS18/u. The GMD1 ranks up there with F units and SD70ACe's in terms of ugliness and uselessness in my modeling world.

TrueLine Trains already has the RS18u on their list.

TLT and Rapido are literally next door to each, other; they're not going to compete on that.

It certainly is a somewhat ugly diesel and I think I have seen one in brass at a hobby show a few years back.

I wish someone would make a CN RS18... I'd even settle for a RCS13 or RSC24.
