Hmmm, they're both C44-9s but the one in the background will prolly be able to fly higher and faster someday.
That is an interesting story. I had a similar experience in 1981. Saw the Athearn unit at the Wolworths in Northwest Plaza St. Louis. It was a CB&Q china red scheme for $18.95. I really wanted a "good" locomotive, so it took me about four months to save up for it.
Found this photo seemed it was about right for Front End Friday:
Almost get the idea it is moving
Is the vignette effect intentional, or an artifact of a very small f stop setting? Either way, it worked out really well.

It was an intentional photograph. I invited an aspiring photographer over with a very nice camera to take shots of the layout, just before the tear down. As 95% of the shots were not very well executed, a couple passed muster, this being one of them.
As remuneration, a salvageable part of the layout went to their young son, who loved model railroads.
OK, we're getting behind with updates here. So here are some more "Front End Friday" shots of a couple of ScaleTrains Dash9-44CW's.

Reviving this thread too. I had a day to kill around Seattle this week, so I wandered down to Kent where I know a place to sit by the tracks.

Boy that's some kinda monster rooftop antenna there on ol' Amtrak 303. That thing'll even pick up signals...

Looks like a light pole for the depot.

Of course.

In fact the left end of the next one down the line (and its guy wire) can be seen just above the "r" in Amtrak on the side, so, yeah: platform lights.
I will admit to actually wondering for a few moments (wondering for real), if it wasn't some new, modern-funky pantograph design for a locomotive that runs the northeast corridor...but a quick check of other "images for Amtrak 303" put that to rest.
