Hello, everyone

I was in San dimas Ca This weekend for some Business. That had allowed me to stop into the train stop in san dimas CA. I was there two weeks earlier to get a set of Athearn 48' Allied moving containers that were long gone, and do some Recon for my father. My father WAS the biggest O scale collector/operator in the state of Arizona from 2002-2006,Then exotic Motorcycles took the place of trains. Well he is back into trains now,and wants to be where is was. He is still in the top Five.

So when i was there two weeks ago, I spot a ATLAS GP60M warbonnet Dummy. I speak to the old man,and he pulls it out,and lets me touch it,and look at the box.No questions asked,Very nice guy. I tell him of my intentions and that im doing recon for my father who is the collector. Other items that grab me is the Lionel Gevo, and the mth BNSF northern DAP. I thank him for his time, and buy my item, and rock home.

Well this weekend,I go back WITH the collector,to pick up a FEW items.
After a few moments "Paul" The owner. Comes back and sees if we need any help. My father doesn't speak he just nods to me,and as I do all the talking.

I say " I would like to buy that ATLAS GP60M Warbonnet"
"Can you please pull it out"

He pulls it out, starts explaining its a dummy, and its super rare, but really in a tone,as if we dont know what the hell were looking at.

My father goes to grab it,and he stops him,and says
"NO NO no we dont handle it like that"

No problem, we stop, and wait, and he goes upstairs to grab the box,Well at this time we go to pay for the item. Then we comes down, and says the price, and we pay CASH.

Then after we get the receipt. I tell him no dont box it. Its my engine now, so i can touch it anyway i want, and at this point. He is really pist, and just pouts away like a child. Then i see his wife call me a asshole, because we are not talkative people, we are here to buy,not hear about your views on Arizona Immigration Laws. The thing is the way he was holding it,is the same way we was.

Because of his attitude,He lost the sale of the

MTH SD50 DUMMY $179.99
BNSF DAP northern $1499.99
Lionel GE ESS44AC $849.99

I had the cash in my pocket, and we was ready to drop that in his store that day. Ya i know He may have many customers But I think $2k today is better then 2k Next year.

I just want everyone to know, I just had a bad experience, and will NEVER EVER go the train stop again, and im hoping you dont either. The Train shack, and the whistle stop, are a bit of the way,But every time i go. I am treated very professional.

to the old farts at the Train shop, aka the owner Paul, and that old hag you call a wife.

"Paul I own Overland 2 rail, and I know Mike from MTH,so Learn some freaking customer service!"

The thing is he was boxing it up the same way we was. "Paul I own Overland 2 rail, and I know Mike from MTH,so Learn some freaking customer service asshole!"

hmm, so you were rude to him as well. how is that incident speaks any higher about you then him then? you being the customer doesn't absolve you from being polite at all times .

Tankist I see where you are coming from, but from a business stand point, after you sell an item to a customer you shouldn't have the right to tell them how to handle it seeing as they purchased it.

I'm sorry to hear this. I know Paul and his wife, and used to shop at the Train Stop a lot when I lived in LA. This was now almost 40 years ago, so they were both young then. I can only surmise that they have gotten less patient in their old age, or maybe medical problems are getting to them. SP, I'm not defending their behavior, but it sounds like you made a bad situation worse. I always try to remember that the people I'm dealing with, even if it's my money, also have their own problems, and I try to cut them some slack. Sometimes, they don't deserve it, but it makes me feel better.

I also had an unpleasant experience at the Train Stop.
On my first visit I found Paul to be a bit "Holier Than Thou" on the subject of trains, however after we exchanged a few good natured barbs, he became quite helpful, and I walked out with about $200.00 in train stuff.
On my last visit, about a year ago, shopping list in hand, which included a sound decoder, we went through the barb routine and all was fine, until the lady, I assume his wife, inferred that I had no idea what I was talking about, and that there was no such item available anywhere. When I insisted that I had done a bit of research on the item, she became quite rude. I left the store without buying anything and have not been back since.
I did manage to get the decoder at Milepost 38 in Anaheim, on my next visit to California.
I may not be the smartest, when it comes to trains, but I am not a complete idiot.

I don't sell trains but I have had my share of "interesting" customers. I just try to stay neutral. This isn't always easy.

These days, I just take for granted that anyone over 40 is on medications. (You almost never find anyone who is on only 1 medication.) Many of the more popular drugs cause personality changes when combined with other drugs. Doctors don't tell you this, and drug companies aren't about to tell you. Since this seems to be a gradual change in behavior, it sounds like Paul and his wife may have problems related to aging and medications.

(LOL!!!) You made me laugh out loud when I read this! ... because it's SO true! Americans just have to be the most drug dependent society on Earth.

I take exception to "take it for granted, over 40 on drugs"
I'm 72 and I'm not on any drugs.
You are obviously an opinionated, young whipper snapper.

Hi Mac, :)

I'm not much younger than you are and don't take the least bit of offense from what alco said because it doesn't apply to me. His assumption isn't farfetched with the overwhelming majority of overmedicated mood regulated Americans.

One of the early signs of dementia, either Alzheimers or cardiovascular induced like multiple infarct dementia, is a change in personality to hostility. I saw this in a family member. Not pretty and hard to deal with when there doesn't appear to be anything physically wrong (unless you see the MRI or CT of their brain...)

Good for you Mac. I'm sorry to report that I'm a bit too old to be a "young" whipper snapper, although I stand guilty of being opinionated.

I'm sorry you misread the intent of my statement. I meant to say that I try to give people the benefit of the doubt when they are being difficult.

I find that because I do try to be polite and helpful, people tell me a lot more than I really want to know. So I get to hear their medical histories whether I want to or not. I don't have to guess that they are on medications, they tell me the whole list. The most common ones I hear about are also some of the worst for side effects.

I too hate to be someone that has to cry about service and how I was treated at a LHS but I too have had nothing but bad experiences from the Train Stop in San Dimas. Glendora is the next town west of San Dimas and I love the convenience of a train store next door, but I now will never go there anymore. It's Milepost or Whistle Stop for me.

Two experiences come to mind when I talk about The Train Stop. First was when I wanted to purchase a P2K SD60 in EMD colors. He had one that sat on his wall for over a year. He wanted $140 for it so I offered him $100 right now to take if off of his hands. He told me that he would let that engine sit and rot before he would discount it. So I walked out.

Next was when I brought in my oldest son who was about 3 at the time. I had him right by me close but he got so excited to see all of the trains that he started pulling the Bachmann's down one by one, but he never dropped them. I quickly was there to stop him but all of a sudden the wife started going off on me about my kid. Of course Jared, my son was upset that he couldn't hold the train so I picked him up, told him that the lady was mad at him and we once again walked out.

I know that these are two not so special experiences but I have felt that my business is not worth anything to them. I understand that if I was in their shoes I'd be hard too but I also know the value of a customer and a relationship. I have no relationship with them therefore I take my business to the other two shops where they actually give a darn about me as a no name modeler. Sadly I have spent a lot of money at the other two places that I could have spent at The Train Stop

You and my father have something in common. He's 76 and healthy as a horse. Doesn't take any medication whatsoever. Me on the other hand, my medical records from the past couple of years are 4 or 5 inches thick and I'm on about a dozen different meds and I'm only 50. And I do know a lot of people younger than I am that are on fewer but more potent drugs than I am.
