I dont think it would be dirty rails. Make sure its not something lying across the rails, I was looking for a short, took me 15 minutes to realize I had a staple gun sitting on both rails :D. Hope you find it.

I think you could get tape to work. The only two problems you may run into is that on tight curves it may not be strong enough to keep flex track in place and if you need to take up a section of track it may take the roadbed with it :p.

I would say most of us use flextrack (which would be hard to layout and test)on our layouts so we make a trackplan (or just wing it =) ) instead of laying out track and testing it. When I transfer a track plan I make a line down the center of the path. Only problem you might have is if you went...

If you do decide to go with foam if you split it down the middle when laying curves (it is pre slit jut pulls apart) it is alot easier to get it to lay flat on curves. Also if you glue it down (I would think it would eventually rip if you tried it with nails) you can sand foam to meet...
