Today is the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse, Baltimore, Maryland!

Good morning all!

Welcome to the weekend!

A chilly Northern Illinois day today compared to our warm last few days. Temps are only 56F with a stiff wind
making it feel like 43F. Glad I mowed and trimmed last night.

Got a bunch of things to do today to get ready for my daughters graduation next Wed. Should keep me busy
into the afternoon.

Have a safe day everyone!

Good Morning All. Clear and 69° here this morning. This next week is supposed to be cooler, with temperatures topping out in the low to mid-80's. Chance of thundershowers today through Monday. An isolated but severe t-storm hit Dallas 65 miles south of here yesterday around 6:00 pm, but nothing this far north.

Heavy duty work day here yesterday for me. Weedeater in the garden along the fence and compost bin; and in the yard around the wood stacks and pool. Electric push mower around the house and some close by trees. I cut and then split several logs for firewood. I hadn't split any in a few months, so that was a bit of different exercise. Earlier I did a load of laundry and later I made something new to me for supper, Chicken Piccata. I've made Tilapia Piccata before, but this was my first go at using chicken. Quite tasty. It's split chicken breasts cooked in a lemon/butter/caper/white wine/cream sauce, doused in Parmesan and Parsley at the table. Steamed Asparagus, French bread and Strawberries rounded out the meal. This recipe went into the "keeper" file.
No household tasks on tap today, but garden maintenance will start early, after the dew evaporates and before the forecasted rain hits this afternoon. Firewood is also on the agenda, I have a lot already cut but much needs trimming and splitting; and it all needs stacking.

I don't care where hot dogs or hamburgers came from, as long as they are real meat and not "Beyond Meat"! The Kroger meat manager couldn't tell me why these products were in the meat section to begin with! I make my own hamburgers, but purchase Nathan's All Beef Hot Dogs. A great alternative that I eat more often is Earl Campbell's Hot Links, made right here in Texas.

Yesterday was a run trains day out in the train shed. I ran a local to Charlottesville and switched 4 of the 8 industries there, easy run as they were all trailing point spurs. A boxcar at Miracle Manufacturing, another one at Acme Chemical, a reefer at Federal Cold Storage and an insulated boxcar at the unnamed beer distributor. Then I staged another local for Vernon with cars for all 6 industries on the north side of town. Three trailing spurs, two facing spurs and a grain elevator with a double-ended siding. Besides the elevator, there is a plastics manufacturer, a propane distributor, a fertilizer dealer, a sand mining operation and an unnamed industry. That train is parked on the siding waiting for a manifest freight and an intermodal train to pass through town before beginning it's switching. That will begin my next session. No fast clock for me, just sequential operations.
In Charlottesville, Acme Chemical.

Tom O - While I much prefer the Kadee whisker couplers, I have too many freight cars with #5's to consider changing them out. As long as they aren't giving me any trouble, they stay put.
RANT: It still really pisses me off that I have to change out the couplers in those expensive ScaleTrains engines that I buy. And not that I still have any left to use, but #5's don't work. END OF RANT.
Steel versus plastic axles don't bother me. I really can't tell any difference in performance on my layout. I have a mix of Kadee and Intermountain wheelsets, with many P2K's in older cars. I don't like the newer Walther's Proto because they are too shiny and I have to weather them all.
Dave - I add weight to all my cars that might need it. Unweighted ones will track OK in short trains, but I run more modern trains and most of my "running" trains have 20 cars in them. Going forward isn't a problem, but backing through a series of switches into a yard or an industry siding presents problems that I don't need. I seem to be about 50:50 with running and building.
Troy - Y'all have a safe trip. Enjoy the time.

Everyone have a great Saturday. I now have a household task. My wife closed a bedroom window because the birds out by the pond were making a racket, and she trapped a lizard between the window and the screen. Not sure where it came from, but I'll just take the screen off and shoo it away. It's probably one of those flat lizards that slipped through the space between the screen and window frame to begin with, and it may be gone by the time I get to it.

The latest SXT engine I bought direct from them had Micro-Trains couplers factory installed. Maybe they've decided to simply install Kadees and MT couplers on them now, since the engines are so expensive to begin with, another $4 isn't that much to add. I can see their point when their Operator engines were $100,it added a noticeable amount, but now the newest versions are $300+, $4 is a drop in the bucket.

Ketchup No thank you, NO. I hate the stuff.
All the family like it and I have to put it on the table for some meals. Meals like burgers, fish fingers, fries, whatever. Yuk!!!

Hot Dogs Not a family favourite, but when we have them it's Ketchup for the family and English Mustard for me.

Ketchup / Catsup == Steak-ums and Hamburgers and meat loaf and stuff like that.
Mustard -- sausages. Also used on things like Pastrami and spicy meats (pepperoni and pastrami and salami sandwich for example). Dijon style mustard is good in some beef gravies and stuff like that and on ham or similar sandwiches along with mayo.
Mayo -- ham sandwiches, any chicken or turkey sandwich or salad type. Egg salad, etc.

Rough morning so far. I'm sure it could have been worse if it was a full moon.

Took the dog out after my cup of coffee as normal. We didn't get 30' from the house and her hackles went up as she dragged me down to the field. That tweaked my wrist and definitely woke me up. She was working her nose hard on the scent and staring in one direction. I'm guessing there was a coyote near by, but we didn't see anything....thankfully. I finally got her to decompress and back to the house.....she was still on guard for a while. Totally a breed thing.

I ate breakfast and decided to go to the gym so I could decompress. I was feeling 35yo in my 65yo body today so I decided to push it a little on my aerobic warmup. I set the treadmill to 4mph and the incline to 10 and off I went. My legs are probably half as long as Bruette's so I was moving at a fast clip to stay on. About 6 minutes in of the 30 I was going to do I slapped the emergency stop. I had an "oh crap" moment. I think I either sprained or now have a tear in my hip flexor. No hard walking or climbing for a while. I took it easy on the weights. No need to push my luck with the wrist.

I think this is a good day to sit and watch TV.

I believe it was Heinz that popularized "ketchup", making it the standard spelling in most places.

Heinz is the only ketchup I use. I only use it on burgers or fries cooked in the air fryer. I only eat homemade deep-fried, double fried fries with salt.

Ketchup No thank you, NO. I hate the stuff.
Heinz ketchup varies around the world. Although it's the same brand, the formulation is often tailored to local tastes. I didn't like it in Hungary.

I get to make dinner today! Guess what I'm making? Beef hotdogs, green peppers, onions, and diced tomatoes. I cook it in a tablespoon of beef fat. I add a tablespoon of Italian Seasoning, a tablespoon of Vegeta, All-Purpose seasoning from Croatia and a half teaspoon of dried, crushed hot peppers.

I can't bore my wife with just hotdogs every time I cook.

Ketchup/Catsup or is it Cat soup? Maybe a dollop on a cheeseburger, but other than that it can stay in the fridge.
I do whole heartedly agree with you other preferences.

Evening all,

Busy day. Had the 2 local grandkids over to do some things. The granddaughter did a good job on thinning the carrots. Grandson helped me remove some step blocks I had made to get between the patio and pool. No longer have the pool and the son wanted them as he has a use. Also got all the flower bed decorations back in place after they were removed for the new roof.
We then moved to the son's house where we dug and tilled a new area where he wants to put in strawberries and we fenced it in as well. I'm beat. I started with the little tiller I bought a couple years ago, but ground to compacted and too many tree roots. So we turned it by hand, cutting out what roots we could and then I busted the clods of dry clay soil with the tiller. We mixed 4 bags of compost into it. Then fenced and gated it.

I came home and iced down the knees. Left one is still pretty swollen. Good thing I'm getting it fixed.

Storms possible overnight and through Monday. Hopefully we at least get some rain. We're 6" behind for the year and 12" behind each of the past 2 years.

Have a good night.

Never good to have the “oh crap” moment. Take care and remember being 35 years ago is long gone…
