Good afternoon gang!

Spent the morning just puttering around. Kill some weeds in the driveway and pulled some weeds in the front garden.

The killer Queen was at it again. The current score is

Well, the guy that empties the dumpster here is going to be unhappy. I went through all the canned stuff that I have, and a 13 gallon garbage can is now filled with outdated canned goods and those little sauce/spice packets. Since I'm by myself, I really don't get elaborate with meals any more, so that stuff just sat around and got old. I also found a cardboard can of Creamora that we opened and used a small portion of before we sold our travel trailer in 2020. It doesn't have a date, but since it's been siting around opened since before the pandemic, it got tossed. I found two cans of Spaghetti-Os that my wife loved to heat up for lunch, that expired two weeks ago. I'll eat one of those for lunch today, and one for lunch tomorrow.
I also have a 5 gallon bucket of prepper meals that I got 10 years ago, but that doesn't expire until 2035, so I think I've got some time before I have to throw it away.

Willie - I so envy your growing season. The only crops I've been able to harvest in the last month are asparagus, spinach, and some lettuces. Hood strawberries should start being harvestable in the next week or two, but my peas and beans do not have any blossoms yet.
My growing season is interrupted by the heat here in late-July until after Labor Day. Tomato plants will survive with watering but won't bear until the nighttime temperatures fall below 75° and stay there. The peas will be gone by the end of this month, too hot for them. Onion harvest starts next week as the tops are already dying back. Squash, Tomatoes, Peppers and Green Beans will be harvested during June, and some years into early July. It's already too hot for Lettuce, Spinach and Radishes. Broccoli and Cabbage usually are done with by now, but some years the Broccoli will hang on for a few extra weeks. Only three things will thrive during the summer (with weekly watering), Okra, Peanuts and Sweet Potatoes. I can replant for the fall in early September and harvest many things until after Thanksgiving.

Afternoon all,

Getting ready for storms to hit shortly, however nothing really big showing on radar in my part of the state yet. Most are still in Oklahoma.

Canned goods I'll eat bast the date as long as the can in intact and no rust. We have a dry storage cabinet we keep them in.

I hope kgstakes makes it back safe as one of the 2 weather models has the most severe stuff coming in the area he's driving through.

Good afternoon. It's mostly sunny and 87.
Most of y'all are probably aware that I downsized and moved in late 2022, moving into a fifth-wheel trailer in Florida. I've spent some effort attempting to consume all the supplies my wife and I had amassed before her death earlier that year. While I've been making inroads into the stuff, I just threw away several cans of soup and broth that, when I checked the dates, had expired in 2023. I'll go through the rest of the canned goods and see what else is expired or about to expire, and either do my best to use it, or toss it, if it's too old. While I'm not worried about it going bad, I do know that the longer food is stored away, the more nutritional value is lost. I threw away a bag of rice that expired about the same time, while it probably wouldn't hurt to eat it, it also wouldn't have done any good, either.
Cans of soup and stuff as long as they’re not puffed out are fine and nutritionally are about the same.

I read a study once that showed canned food that was 25 years old had lost only like 5-10% of its nutrition. (As long as it wasn’t puffy and spoiled).

Before our recent move I was trying to to finish off the soups and stuff, some of which were 10’or more years past date. I’m still here and they tasted fine and I’m sure we’re pretty much as nutritious as when they were made (which is not saying a lot).

Be careful with tomato based and other acidic based foods stored for a long time. But for normal stuff it should be fine as long as it’s not bulged.

Stopped for the night at north platte Nebraska and it was windy all the way from South Dakota and wouldn’t you know it, thunderstorm watch and possible tornado tonight. Yeah just what you want to hear when you’re sleeping in your camper.

Course I guess back home Kansas is in the same situation tonight.

God Bless everyone and hope nobody has any severe weather tonight.
