I have had loose leaf lettuce last 3 1/2 weeks when I "lost" it in the back of the fridge. By contrast, my wife bought some from a competitor, Winco, across town and it didn't last a week. It's all a matter of using your resources wisely.

yeah. We buy Romaine at Costco and as long as it is not Dole it seems to last a really long time, as long as you store it upright. Other stores Romaine tends to not last long at all, no matter how you store it.

Over time you learn the tricks and secrets of your local market to better allocate your resources. A while back we were in some hard straights and had to be really careful with our money. I never bought anything that wasn't on sale, coupon, etc. except for the most basic needs. After doing that for a long while, I still do it even though we are doing better and don't have the direct financial pressures we were under then. Once you learn to shop frugally, you keep at it. That is not to say I can't splurge or be inefficient, but I can't go to Costco and buy things, except staples or things that we absolutely have to have, unless the stuff is "on coupon" (even though they no longer use actual paper coupons). I'll just wait until it is...

Once you learn to shop frugally,

That's something I need to learn when I shop on-line or especially at the LHS. Just ask to see my collection of Kadee cars that are in their plastic cases in storage. I purchased two or three of the KD cars every-time I when to Hiawatha Hobbies.

Now I use a list and take only the money I need for the items on the list when I go Walther's.

yeah I tend to fail with hobby related stuff. I do really well but then an eventual single failure leads to multiple failures.

I ended up with parts for 2 new handguns over the holidays and a 9mm PCC-type rifle. and a few misc parts for the stock room. Was not supposed to happen but then rationalizing starts... And once the ice breaks, it tends to grow... Luckily my "club membership" at Rainier Arms just expired, so it is harder to rationalize stuff as I don't get the discounted prices and free shipping of club membership. That and the holidays are over.

But at least I didn't buy the fish pills until they were on sale at Costco... (And most of the other grocery items)

Making some wheels & track for my 3D caboose project.

Willie,
Does the wood ash help? I've got about 10 gallons of it and we are starting a new garden in the spring, about 20x20 plot. It would make a great way to get rid of the ash.
Yes it is beneficial to gardens, vegetables of flowers, except for blueberries, rhododendrons, and some kinds of potatoes. Wood ashes contain calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and trace elements, all beneficial to veggies, especially to tomatoes. I generate about a five gallon pail every ten days during the heating season. Tree roots go deep into the ground and draw up many trace elements, and the ashes just like leaves are very beneficial.

-Sherrel, I've heard that Strawberries contribute to kidney stones. Not sure how reliable that is, but there is always the internet.
-Just got back from the VA clinic. It's taken 6 months to get this appointment to look at a lump on the tendon of my little finger. They said it's not of any concern but if my finger starts curling closed or if I die of it, make an appointment to come back for another look.
-Been having dizzy spells, mostly when looking up or laying down. It was pretty rough when installing the crossover on the staging yard, laying on the floor then looking up to do the wiring. Had to pause a few times till things stopped spinning. Might be dehydration so drinking lots of water.
-Just read a report from the US military saying they have seen a threefold spike in cancer cases since they started doing the vaccines. Might be worth watching.
-Starting to plan for the Timonium show the first weekend of Feb. Last time I forgot to take my box of clamps for the modules and had to hit a couple hardware stores to buy about 30 of them. A few other things I boxed up but forgot to put in the truck.
- Time to clean up the wreaths at the Veterans cemetery at Quantico. They put a call out for helpers this coming Saturday. Trucks and dumpsters will be there to fill. Wx forecast says slick conditions Saturday morning are possible. If so, I'll pass on helping them.
- Saw in interesting thing this morning while driving to the VA clinic just south of Richmond, VA. A car was driving down the sidewalk to my right going in the opposite direction. Not real fast, just about the speed you would travel on a short driveway. A few people had to step onto the grass so as not to get run over. Didn't look like the driver had intentions of slowing down or stopping for them. In that part of town, I might think he was exercising his own preference of travel.
- Lunch is done, think I'll go to the basement, put a couple trains in motion then find a project to fix.

Afternoon All,

Got up this morning not feeling well (cold/flu symptoms) after getting a cup of coffee and meds I laid back down for a couple of hours and now I just feel tired and chilled. No train room today.

Thank you for the likes on my photos yesterday.

I was talking to Dad after the national news last night, and he said the issue in Europe reminds him of how WWII started. Scary thought.

Mikey- Sorry to disappoint. No interiors. It will have 8 exterior lights and 5 interior ones. Thats a lot of wiring under the roofs.

Chad- I hope you and your family feel better quickly.

Troy- Animals definitely train us.

Patrick- Good news about your daughter.

James- Good luck with the show.

Ken (IL)- Good luck with the IRS.

Dave- Nice looking buildings.

Willie- Nice scenes. MOH told me right after we got married that "You can look but not touch". I have lived by those words for almost 44 years. :)

TomO- You're right she is a great modeler, but why is she a sellout?

George- Really nice job on the wheel.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Good morning all! Arou :) nd 5 degrees here and sunny in SE Illinois heading for sunny and 22.

Off work today but I have a busy one planned. Lots to get done by the end of the day, but I'm off tomorrow too. This next couple weeks, the weird schedule where I work has me off today and tomorrow, working Friday and then have the weekend off. Then I get to work 7 days in a row. One appointment tomorrow, so hoping the rest of tomorrow and this weekend will be a little more relaxing.

Got a letter from the Infernal, er, Internal Revenue Service yesterday claiming we didn't file our tax forms last year. Yet somehow they did get the check for what we owed and have no idea what to do with it. If we don't file the forms that we already filed, they say we'll lose the money and still be responsible for last years taxes. When I called them I got a hateful moron who initially answered the phone. She then transferred me to a number where I was immediately and cheerfully disconnected without talking to a soul. The recording that answered that number simply said there was no one for me to talk to and hung up. If there was ever a need for a part of the US government to be abolished, that would be the one and they can take the Social Security Administration right along with them. The most rude and unhelpful people get jobs with those two. Ok, rant over.

@MilwRoader_Steve Good stuff! That book looks like something I could use too!

In the unlikely event I get time to myself today, may try to get some train stuff in. We'll see. Hope you all have a great day!
Have to admit, this whole US revenue business makes me wonder how it's supposed to work, seems it's deliberately made convoluted and difficult to navigate your way through. Don't you have a PAYE system?
I phoned our tax people (20mins on hold) to ask why I was paying so little on my wages, politely told, no, I was paying correct amount, and that they had split my tax between my 2 pensions, so I am now allowed to earn £16000.00 pa. and just pay tax on the extra, as my tax is paid weekly, and I'm assessed on the 16K, (which I make sure I never earn) I usually end up with £800 refund, happy days.

If your getting dizzy looking up, or if you move quickly from a laying or sitting position, that's low blood pressure

Since you two are fighting...hand it over... 🤣

Well, going to see how well being vax'd and boosted is going to go. Sat across from the boss at a meeting this morning for 2 hours. Het tested positive after he left to get his daughter from school as she tested positive. All were masked, but apparently, I can't even test until Monday (5 days from exposure). So I'm expected to wear a mask whenever anyone is in my office or I have to go out. I've been doing that anyway. It would kind of be nice to get some free time off. Wife has had some, I can't even take a regular vacation without covid mucking it up. Can't get a covid vacation either, although a covid vacation might ruin my live forever plans...

Your not bringing a snow blower James? It's takes me about the same time to get to the Big E as it does to Saratoga Racetrack, 2hr 15 mins. I'm going to call my friend Pat and ask him if he's still going? If I needed something I'd go but I'm all stocked up for now.
George

Hmmmmmmm........Snowblower....🤔 Arrrrrgh Arrrrgh....... well I could .....nah nope we are good :p😝😝 I am going it will be an adventure. Well if ya let me know by Friday night....

It's exactly what I do with all the wood I burn. I dump them buckets in my 2 main gardens in various spots where it spreads out good when the snow melts then of course I hit it in the spring with the tiller.

James in 1965 the Marines sent me to the Sahara Desert for desert warfare training. I'm good when the temp is 110. I have no blizzard training. I think I'll pass on this trip but I could change my mind. 2 hours and 15 minutes in the snow most likely not.
