Ok guys...how do you guys set up your roadbed for turnouts?

In this picture, you can see I cut cork pieces to go under the turnouts. ... Other things to look at are push pins to hold the track in place temporarily to get it lined up, and use of straight edges and curve templates (home made) to line up the track.

Well with my track I have laid out their center points. For the most part its turned out ok. That is of course until you get to the tunnel then we'll they are off just a little. The curve through the tunnel is throwing them off. Not a big deal to me. I'll make do with what I have on that. My mainline came back together in fairly decent order so I can't complain. Though I have had enough pain for one night. Do this dance again tomorrow I suppose. Thank you for your insight on this. I have roughly cut and put into place my cork for my turnouts. I will have to probably precut my cork if I can with my turnouts.

Afternoon All,

Back from Prototype Rails. I had a great time. I learned some new weathering techniques, took a class on spray painting acrylics, and actually learned that a lot of Pennsy round houses did not use smoke jacks and exterior exhausts on the roof but instead had a system that piped the exhaust to and out side smoke stack, so I am going to model that instead of what I have right now.

Here are my next 2 projects

1. Add a siding for motive power on the upper coal track, smooth out the main in the picture and connect all 3 coal leads to main.
2. Instead of having 2 leads to the yard, make it one lead.

Possible project: I am thinking seriously thinking about removing the coal trestle behind the mine and make it a scratch built small bulk oil delivery business. This would give me a completely new industry and will give me a reason to use the tank cars I have.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Say Curt: As far as the smoke jacks you might want to consider modeling both for a bit of variety?

I think your idea of a bulk Oil Dist is a good one. I'm my bulk oil distributor I'm going to get the Walthers Oil loading platform which is designed to have service two tracks but mine will have only have one track. I'm also thinking this facility will handle both Oil & Kerosene for added product to deliver. Even in your time period Kerosene was still widely used.

Have a good day

Good morning Everybody!

Its clear and a cold 26 degrees with 50% humidity and winds subsiding, but remaining at 12mph in southeast Baltimore.

Have a great day everybody!

Morning all ,another type A winter day!

Uh, just a thought, has anyone ever heard of someone who supposedly sells to the public for a living but has NO way to be reached by customers?

I thought so.

NEVER deal thru a 3rd party EVEN if the third party is WELL KNOWN to you! NO direct commo, NO SALE!

Even a STREET HUSTLER will give you a number to call, this guy is SUPPOSED to be legit!

I'm 'ahead' right now, I supposedly "owe him" BUT if he does not want to be a Man and TALK to me and explain why, he looses!

I'm perfectly willing to hear his side from HIM not this "he said" bullcrap!

Some people!

I hope you've said that to the "go-between". If this is ebay, there may be rules he is breaking. I don't know what the "acting as an agent" rules are in your state, or the US generally, but here they are quite stringent, whether by a registered agent or just plain acting as one.

Good Morning. 30° and clear, only going to 36° today. Another "full" day, first an eye exam, then another meeting concerning the MIL's future care arrangements. Need to arrange some doctor appointments, and find time for a hair cut.

Garry: Your home made templates are interesting. They remind me of the old Truscale Milled roadbed.
Curt: I am looking forward to following the progress of your projects.
CS3: Sounds like the roadbed is coming along. Hopefully the alignment issue in your mountainous region will not cause problems. Your locomotive fleet is looking great.
Louis: Have a great day, stay warm, and stay well today.
NG: Not sure what y'all are referring to, but in general, people who earn their money selling in the background, are hiding from their clients for a reason.

Good Morning All. Mostly cloudy, no wind and 27 degrees here this morning. Supposed to warm up to the lower 50's this afternoon after a light wind from the South commences. Making a solo grocery run today instead of Tuesday...remember it's a 50 mile round trip for me...wife ran out of yogurt.
CS3 - I do my turnouts the same as Garry. Piecing and fitting. It's not perfect and requires a little extra ballast to fill in the gaps, but it is the easiest.
Karl - Billboard looks good. Aside from the picture, is it a kit or scratchbuilt? Thanks for the links.
Curt - Nice scene...crowded but it appears to be smooth-flowing.
new guy - In the 60's we called them "pushers"!

When I get into the train shed later today, I will be installing roads in the newest section of layout. I know I promised pictures a few days ago, but I keep leaving the camera out there and haven't downloaded the pictures yet.

Good morning. It's clear, windy, and 24.
It's an adventure hauling travel trailers on the highway with no anti-sway equipment in 40moh winds...

It's a 'private sale' between civilians. Oh YES! I've been 'open to negotiations' thru this whole thing. I am not hard to find and can be quite reasonable when solid information is provided. It has not been provided. My initial suspicions about this because of a lack of direct communication have been found founded! Oh well. It's not an awful huge amount of money involved here, it's the PRINCIPAL of the thing!

21 and sunny here.
I doubt it was too much colder over the night.
Good thing we're not working outside.
We'll swapping out kitchen appliances today.
The ride is on his way so I'll catch you fellers this evening.

Good morning all. 10 degrees to start off the day. Managed to get the ice chipped off of the grill yesterday afternoon and the steaks were excellent. We but our beef fron a rancher in the valley by the side. Black Angus is fantastic. A boneless rib eye.

Found this old photo which I also posted in the weekly photo fun. This is 5th street in Livingston, MT. Looks like they just changer out the power. The North Coast Limited. This was taken at the west end of the yard, which is now the Montana Rail Link yard, but it pretty much still looks the same except for more modern equipment. I thought this photo was real interesting because of the '59 Impala on the left of the photo. Looks just like mine.

Good Morning, -20 and light breeze out there. Red whispy clouds in the eastern horizon this morning. I am going to have to thaw out.

Sitting down here watching COMBAT with VIC MORROW on the you-tube takes me back to summers in Detroit back in the 70's watching it with my Grandfather who had seen much action in Europe. He loved that show and most all WW2 related stuff that was on WHENEVER it was on! Kinda nice watching it without commercials but I'd take the commercials to watch it with "Papa" one more time.

I play 'stump you tube' looking for obscure stuff I have not seen in a while, sometimes you get lucky and stumble across stuff that is actually worth watching.

as a kid I loved Combat and still do....but my dad, after watching one episode, refused to watch because it reminded him to much of his time walking through Europe in the war.

"Garry: Your home made templates are interesting. They remind me of the old Truscale Milled roadbed. "

Joe... You're so smart. I did start with a couple of old Tru Scale wood roadbed pieces from my scrap box. I decided I needed a lot more. So my scroll saw went to work making a supply of them. They saved a lot of time building this layout.

I have this photo in weekly Photo Fun. It shows a small dark green grain truck I just made. It is a 1937-1941 International truck made from a Sylvan Models kit. It goes with my rural scene.

Chet ... I like the '59 Impala. ... Years ago, I had a '62 Impala. Stupidly, I traded it in for a newer car. ...Of course, the NP F units look fantastic.

Like the photo Garry. That's a great scene. My Impala was a two plus year project. It was an actual barn find in the northern part of the state. The body was totally rust free and immaculate, but it had a six banger with a power glide transmission. It ended up getting a complete frame off restoration. All of the bushings were dry rotted and when I had it down to the bare frame, I decided to make it a cruiser, or what is now called a restomod. Now has a Corvette engine with a six speed manual tranny. It's hiding in my climate controlled shop for the winter.

Good morning. Chilly (cold) 43* and going up to maybe 58*. No rain.

Chet- Nice photo's. Any chance you have pictures of other engines-FM in particular? I have an AHM engine with same colors but side paint job is different than yours.

Garry- I salvaged a bunch of Tru-Scale from an old layout and am still using some of them. Very handy to have.

Don't know what photos you are asking for. If it's a Northern Pacific unit, the locomotives are in the Lowey paint scheme, which replaced the older Pine Tree paint scheme. Here is the older paint scheme.

np2.jpg This is the old passenger paint job,

np3.jpg4292.1297621416.jpg This is the freight paint scheme, the Pinr Tree scheme which lasted until the merger that created the BN.

I think I know how he felt. I can watch WW1 or WW2, Korea and Vietnam stuff with enthusiasm. I actually LAUGHED in the theatre at the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan when the guy takes one in the helmet and then the forehead! (buh-HA! Talk about EMBARASSING!!!)

But things like Black Hawk Down hit a wee bit too close to home for me and I find it difficult to watch, those were my peers they dragged through the streets of Mogadishu and I get a little 'upset' seeing it on the big screen!
