57 and clearing from early morning rain here.
SWMBO just left to do a little shopping, I'm gonna mess with the trains til she gets back, then wash a months worth of crud off the cars. Temps de to drop from another arctic blast by Tuesday, but at least no precip in the future forecast.

I got a giggle out of this this morning, I gotta get a pet skunk! <<<--- video link!

later gang!

Around here, we get ice. I'll drive any day in snow, but I stay out of my car when the road is covered with ice.

I been driving in it since I got behind the wheel of a pick-up on the farm as a wee pup so it's just second nature by now.

I've been lucky, oh yea! Had a few close ones but THINK AHEAD, waaay ahead and KEEP CALM! It starts getting a little squirrely and most folks PANIC! LOL! Even with those gawdawful anti-lock brakes it's a good idea to "engage and disengage" them by a SLOW version of the traditional 'pumping of brakes' motion in a sliding 'situation' you may find yourself back in some road that has some traction and you can regain some control. It's worked for me.

This 'pumping of breaks' technique works with both front wheel and rear wheel drive vehicles. The difference THERE as to how you GOT into and get OUT of the slide in different conditions is an entire subject of it's own!

Afternoon All,

Back from Prototype Rails. I had a great time. I learned some new weathering techniques, took a class on spray painting acrylics, and actually learned that a lot of Pennsy round houses did not use smoke jacks and exterior exhausts on the roof but instead had a system that piped the exhaust to and out side smoke stack, so I am going to model that instead of what I have right now.

Chessie- Very nice looking mountain. I have always used cardboard strips so your method is an easier alternative that works well.

Here are my next 2 projects

1. Add a siding for motive power on the upper coal track, smooth out the main in the picture and connect all 3 coal leads to main.
2. Instead of having 2 leads to the yard, make it one lead.

Possible project: I am thinking seriously thinking about removing the coal trestle behind the mine and make it a scratch built small bulk oil delivery business. This would give me a completely new industry and will give me a reason to use the tank cars I have.

I hope everyone has a good night.

My nerves are on edge! Doing up some roadbed.....oh lord I hope this turns out better this time than last time.

Good afternoon. Up to 30 degrees. No work in the trains this weekend unfortunately. We were out of town overnight at a bowling tournament.

Chessie - Like the mountain. Hope you put roadbed on the tracks going through the tunnel before you built it. Plaster is always a dirty job.

Curt - Noce photo and it looks like an easy project for you.

We'r egoing to grill some steaks this evening so I guess I had better chip the grill out of the ice and snow. We've been in out house for over 38 years and have never had ice like this before. Gotta get to work if we're going to have supper.

Good afternoon ..

Chessie .... Glad you are going to include roadbed..... Important: Make sure the tops of the staples do not protrude higher than the top surface of the roadbed. This will assure the track is level. Hit the top of each staple with a hammer to make sure they are deep enough.

Curt ... I'm trying to picture how you will connect all three coal mine leads to the main line. It looks like there might be room for a parallel track along the side of the main line which would accommodate three turnouts to the mine tracks. In general, i like how your layout looks.

Chet ... Ice can be awful .. Good luck with it.

Ok so now I'm wondering if I should just only add the roadbed to the mainline or add it to the mainline and my run around track as well. Any ideas?

See I ask this because I worry about my transitions from roadbed to no roadbed. I have a full box of cork at my disposal. Now whether or not that is enough for my entire layout I don't know.

JOE We must have bought the same $10 ticket! I forgot it was $2.00 a ticket - thought I was getting $5.00 worth; that shows you how often I try .. most of the time I simply forget to get a ticket.
I hate to say it, but I have a bad feeling about the Packers today. I think that Redskins will trounce them.
Rogers hasn't played with his past enthusiasm this year. Redskins look like they WANT IT!

I got very frustrated yesterday. I typed a longer post than I normally do, however when I went to post it .. the dang computer said I had to "sign in" again. Long story short .. I lost the spoken word, so I threw down the iPad and sulked for the rest of the day. I think my iPad has a virus, or something; i's just not acting normal.

Got to get moving .. Wifey is returning from her escort to N Car. and I have a ton of housework to do. Took down the Christmas stuff, but its all sitting on the dining table and not packed up. She will not be happy if it's all still sitting around.

Sherrel:
I knew the price had gone up to $2, but I didn't know there was a $3 option also. I suppose since the jackpot is getting larger, I'll probably make another donation tomorrow. $10 at a time is enough. I remember one work pool, where we bought $1000 worth of tickets. After the drawing, we had nothing, maybe 10 power balls. Back then, part of the incentive was that I didn't want to be the only guy on the Division, that wasn't part of the pool, and still working...

Not looking good for the 'skins right now, they're down 32 -18.

I'm in the middle of transitioning from Win 7 to Win 10...I did that after the wife's laptop expired and we replaced it with a new one. Problem with Win 10, is much of the Microsoft software (office etc) I had under Win 7 no longer works. For some reason, I'm having difficulty grasping this system, even though I'm using the legacy (win 7) interface in win 10. At least I have outlook back, so I can migrate away from Thunderbird. Other thing, since we started oversight of the MIL, I'm using this computer for "business" purpose, and not just casual recreation. yeah, it's like being back to work again...well, almost.

Sherrel:

I'm in the middle of transitioning from Win 7 to Win 10...I.

Lucky you! I have the upgrade, I just can't turn it on yet. It seems that Mother GM has not caught up yet, they are still stuck in 2002. Since I do most of my training online from home, and also since I can access GM's technical side from home also (really comes in handy fixing cars at home) I have to wait. We just started last year being able to run Google Chrome when we access GM instead of Internet Exploder............I see Windows 11 coming out before I can run Windows 10!

Karl:
I feel your frustration. We have been sending legal documents (POA etc), to my MIL's various vendors, in some cases to simply change a mailing address. It's amazing how many cannot access PDF attachments from office e-mail. Her health insurer (Blue Cross) is one of the worse, they acknowledge receipt of the POA on 12/17/2015, but since it hasn't as yet been entered into their database, they cannot discuss anything with us...

Over all, the transition has been smooth, but I had to get the new version of office, (year to year license renewal), because Win 10 will not support office 2010...

Boring day.... sigh.
Days like this make me wish I had TV to watch. Free TV on the internet only goes so far.
Wouldn't mind to binge-watch some Doctor Who. I don't know anything about the current Doctor or his "companion".
I could just about tell you anything about the last 3 Doctors and their companions.
Just keep those weeping angels away from me. They give me the heebie-jeebies.
Kind of the like the flying monkeys in the original Wizard of Oz movie.

E.

Sitting down here watching COMBAT with VIC MORROW on the you-tube takes me back to summers in Detroit back in the 70's watching it with my Grandfather who had seen much action in Europe. He loved that show and most all WW2 related stuff that was on WHENEVER it was on! Kinda nice watching it without commercials but I'd take the commercials to watch it with "Papa" one more time.

I play 'stump you tube' looking for obscure stuff I have not seen in a while, sometimes you get lucky and stumble across stuff that is actually worth watching.

Ok so aside from the sore thumb from pushing in these foam nails. I really like cork over foam. Almost complete with my mainline.

Curt, you might want to consider a three-way switch. Install it short of the mainline, so you only have one turnout on the main.

New Guy, I like the old Route 66 shows on Youtube. Really get a feel for what things were like in the 60's. I was ten years old in 65 and remember a lot of the old shows. I used to watch Route 66 and Combat with my dad..........I'd give anything to be able to do that again!

chessie, after getting cork road bed in place, I like to hit it with a sanding block and some fairly coarse sandpaper to knock the pieces off that stick out from the bevels. It makes ballasting easier later on.

Had some fun today!

I took this billboard picture,

A little photo editing to here,

Then shrunk & mounted,

One of the FB groups I belong to the subject of photo editing came up, and 2 kind gentlemen posted links to FREE photo editing software you can download. I downloaded them both, and I like them both! In case you need some software, I will put the links up here.

http://www.gimp.org/ Gimp. free photo editing software, kind of a shareware thing, like JMRI

or

Adobe CS2 Yes, it's not the latest and greatest from Adobe Photoshop, but it works, works well, and just might convince you to pony up the bucks for a bigger version.

Enjoy!
