Glad to hear that after the accidents, everyone is well.

Just got back from Butte, MT. It's sunny on this side of the divide, but it was a gloomy day over there. Had to drive bythe Butte Civic Center where this locomotive is on display so photos were a must.

Have a nice day/evening everyone!

Evening All,

Started working on the new project for about 3 hours today. I am clearing scenery first in 2 of what I expect to be 3 major parts of the project (approach to bridge, bridge, departing bridge). The portion I removed today included a 2 foot tunnel. The current height of the risers is 2 inches and will end up being 4.5 inches to the top of the risers after completion. This is what it looks like after cleanup today.

Tomorrow night we are going out with friends for MOH's 58th birthday and Friday I leave early for Gainesville and drag racing.

Terry- Glad your wife is OK. We had a Semi side swipe MOH's car after blowing through a red light several years ago.

Montanan- I enjoy the beautiful scenery photos and of the locomotive today.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Louis- YES ! Traction tire. What I know about Lionels is minimal. Thanks.
Have only run the set 4 or 5 times in- oh heck maybe 14 years.
Phil

Good evening. 46*F and calm in central MD.

Terry - sorry to hear about your wife's accident. I remember all the heartburn we had to go thru when somebody fell asleep at the wheel and totalled my son's car. Hope you won't have to pay a deductible since it wasn't her fault.

Curt - That viaduct is really looking good. Sure wish I had the space for something like that on my layout, but with all the lineside industry spurs, there just isn't anyplace for me to put it.

Mil - I'm enjoying your continuing RR chronology. I'm especially interested in the Western Maryland milestones.

If I had to be without heat, today was certainly the least-painful time for that. Louis is right, at least now I don't have to worry about my indoor water pipes freezing like I would have a few weeks ago. Still a PITA though.

The furnace repair guys finally showed up at ~3:30, but I'm still without heat. They found the root cause of the problem: water, not oil, was being squirted into the burner! They filled a dozen empty Coke bottles and still weren't seeing any oil, so they said they'd need to come back Thursday morning with a special hose and a 5-gallon bucket to catch everything.

In the worst-case scenario, I will need to install a new oil tank; otherwise after they have drained out all the water, they will pour in an emulsifying agent into the tank to absorb the remaining traces of water. The test will be if they can get oil squirting out before they fill the second 5-gallon bucket with water. If they don't, they will have to declare the oil tank "compromised".

58° and foggy here this morning.
High 64° today [Thursday].
High tomorrow [Friday] 47°.
Sat. high of 73°.

Good morning my friends...one more shift to go before weekend! :D
Weather is.....well, British! ;):D

The problem with rubber is that it is susceptible to ozone. Having worked many years in the tire business I can tell you nothing will keep rubber from deteriorating forever. The longest you can expect rubber that has been exposed to air to last is 10 years, rarely more. After 5 years or less it can show signs of deterioration, "ozone cracking".

Traction tires are easily replaced. It may not be a bad idea to take yours to a Lionel dealer for service. A complete service for a diesel should be under $25 including replacing the traction tires, a bit more for steam locomotives.

If you are comfortable you can do it yourself. You can get traction tires from almost any Lionel dealer or eBay. Every new Lionel set comes with a spare set and many break up sets to sell pieces individually on eBay. Be sure to get the correct size. If you need help finding them let me know I will be happy to help. If your set was cataloged after the year 2000 there will be lots of information easily accessed through the Lionel website www.lionel.com even if it is older we can still find the information we need, we will just have to dig a little deeper.

Before you buy them check your set box, you may have a new set sealed in plastic in the box. They won't be as good as new but they will be better then what you have now.

I will be more then happy to help you Phil

Starting off at 43 degrees this morning with highs again expected into the 60's. Time to take off the winter tires ????

While in Butte, MT yesterday, we went to Uptown Butte for lunch. Butte is a bit different. Most towns have their "downtown" area, whereas the old center of Butte is up on a hill overlooking the city, therefor becoming "uptown". There's a lot of history in Butte going back to the late 1800's when copper became king. The place we had lunch was the old Metals Bank which was founded in 1882. The old building is now a national historic site and also a restaurant with some exceptional food. The old vault is still in the back of the building and even has a couple of table in it with the 32 ton door sitting open. This vault is where the "copper kings" kept their money.

Vault.jpg Sorry about the crappy picture.

While having lunch, it was interesting to look at the old buildings across from the restaurant. Perfect old brick buildings that would look just like what you would want on your model railroad layout. There are a lot of kits that are very similar to these two old buildings.

IMAG0316.jpg It's amazing how you just can't get away from model railroading.

The next picture is also an interesting building. The "Times" in the sign is not for a newspaper, but an Irish pub. Then I saw the shamrocks up on light poles and then realized that Saint Patrick's day is just around the corner and the people in this town takes the Saint Patrick's day celebration to a whole new level. This town goes nuts. There is also a micto brewery in the left side of the building. I'm sure that this place will be rocking in a few days.

Hope I didn't bore you.

Good morning ...

I was in Nashville yesterday for medical appointments and all went well.

David... You asked about a word I typed. It was a typo. Eight should have been weight. I make lots of typos, but feel free to razz me about them.

Happy model railroading, everybody.

Good morning. 43° and sunny this morning, with a brisk wind from the NW. We are going over to the beach in a little while. Enjoy the day!

Boring? To the contrary, this is a brilliant post, just the kind I come here to read.

Louis- Thanks for your help. With some deep thinking, I realized Deb bought the set in Dec. 1995. I ran it once or twice while still in Miami. We moved to mid Fla Dec. 1996 and I ran it twice more since. It sits in its original shipping box under a bed.

Curt- WOW ! Never satisfied are you ? I guess you want to make the cover of a MR mag. [ lol ] Have fun with it. Just keep us posted with how it comes along.

Used a blower to sweep sidewalk and portion of lawn. Two more bags raked yesterday. Looked good. Then wind picked up and now lawn and sidewalk covered again. GRRR!
Oh well, good exercise. Can do without shoulder aches.
Prayers for all.
Phil

Montanan- What do you mean-Boring? Just the opposite. Interesting. History is written in those buildings. Just keep posting.

Time to head home 64 degrees and sunny. Have some goodies at the post office. One stop on the way to see what came in.

Here's a horizontal speed bump for trains.

Hey Terry,
What other hidden goodies can I find in #2380?
I just fiddling around and found a bunch of sounds I didn't know were there.
Like F9 gives me clickity-clack going down the track (WAY COOL) and F7 (maybe F6) gives me some control tower radio traffic (ALSO WAY COOL)!!

I also see you have a speed table/curve setup for this thing.
