MTH big boy is broke already!

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Well think about it. We are paying a higher price by buying defective products. I have no problem paying a premium to get a good quality product made here in the US, and giving some Americans their jobs back.
QUOTE]

Unfortunately, most Americans are not informed consumers, nor do they want to take the time to become informed. They just want it cheap, cheap, cheap. In fact, they dont have the time to become informed bc we're all too busy working ourselves to death. Boooooo!

The problem with these locomotives is that they are not priced cheap, just built cheap.

. It took some complaining and discussion but they finally fulfilled my request.

Probably cost them more for the postage than for the parts. It shouldn't be like that. They should be actively trying to assist customers, rather than debate them.
However, the corporate philosophy at MTH has always been that their fecal material is odorless. As long as the sheep continue to blindly go to slaughter, they have no reason to change. :(

Its easy to know why there is not much report : Say you dislike a mth on the atlas forum and you get bashed, flamed, insulted and banned (oh, I forgot you also get the athearn fanboy tags) :(

its funny to note that the mth comes with mchenry coupler, wich i believe are owned by athearn :)

A lot of quiet--and not so quiet--desperation from a pile of MTH fanbois there...:eek:

I can say that I've been banned from there as well...or at least I can't get registered on that site again...:rolleyes:

Tried to register there a month or so ago, never heard back from them.:(

Oh well, it's their loss as far as I am concerned.:D Of course, it makes me wonder, how fast I too could be banned!!:D:rolleyes:

Can you believe they dont want to tell me what each color coded wire do on their lightboard ? i want my rear ditch light to function on my sd70, so i will have to take it all apart. Obviously im a spy that want to copy their design...
Here's a link to a thread where I showed pics and info on changing the decoder out on an Ace. You can see your colors there. I have multiple posts starting on page 11 with pics.

As for the Atlas forums, you're not banned if you can't register. The person approving memberships isn't approving them. (which may suggest forum registration is closed).

Beware, MTH uses negative wires for the function commons. NMRA compliant DCC decoders use positive common wires.

Mine is the dcc ready version, yet my digitrax decoder does work with the 8 pin plug, its just that i want to get the rear ditch light working when going in reverse. But ill pay attention to the the common wire. Thanks for the heads up !

well i brought it to the scale rails club , my son came down to florida & he wanted to see it run, up to this point i had it on gulf coast hobbie track & it ran fine ,then i put it on a test track 2 or 3 times & no issues will today i put the big boy on the track well dialed up the number & we got sound ..........ahhh no movment :( so we tried it 2 more times & nothing  well the electronics guy took a look at it & that end was fine so figure its mechanical i felt like a guy that took a beautiful girl to the prom just to have her puke everywhere:eek:

im going to dig into it but i figure it has to do with the drivetrain /dogbone/ collar issue , man that is my 3rd articulated thats gone down

Are these all the same brand? Has there been any pattern to the failures? Mechanical, electrical? When a loco will produce sound, but doesn't move, you have to see if that is a problem with the decoder, or some bind-up in the running gear or the drive train. Loosened screws holding the main rod and eccentric rod has caused me the most problem on steamers. A periodic check doesn't hurt. If you can't hear any motor hum, then the problem is likely in the decoder, although it could be a broken wire somewhere. An ohmmeter should be used between the tender pickup and the motor to see if there is continuity. Best of luck!

no they are diffrent brands for diffrent reasons , but the MTH big boy is a special saga between irocinblue89 & me , its like i got his exgirlfriend & i can see why he got rid of her lol

I don't want to laugh here,,,,,but THAT'S Funny!!:D:D:D:p;):rolleyes::p:D

Y'all can have your MTH and your BLI's. I'll be over in the corner with my brass and cast engines that I've remotored and installed Tsunami's in.......running them! ;)

IF I felt compelled to get a big articulated, I'd go with a Bachmann EM1 w/sound. At least I know if it broke I could get it repaired!

I have a BLI 2-10-4 that has been back for repair so often it has it's own shelf reserved there.

I sent my Bachmann EM1 down the road after I quartered it and did other tunning. It ran like a champ. But the Bachmann name has NEVER served me well and I just couldn't stand waiting until the shoe dropped. At least with my Athearn's and MTH's I can usually fix them. Hell, I made a new side rod and spacer out of brass stock for my Athearn Challenger. Cant even tell.

BTW it's sad I knew what was wrong with Black's big boy within 5 words of our phone conversation... To many repairs under my belt.

I have about 12 different BLI steamers from issues running between 2003 and last year. I have sent five of them back for a number of reasons, two of which were my fault. It was only in the case of the PCM Y6b, which I dropped (AAAARRGGGHHH!!!) that they agree to fix it for USD$42, parts and return shipping included. That's a bargain for that wonderful locomotive. Works like a champ, although they forgot the reverser rod on one side, which they mailed to me.

On two occasions, one with a fried decoder, they fixed them for nothing. I broke a power pickup phoshpor bronze under the tender of my Hudson. Not too shabby.

So, that's three. The fourth was my brass hybrid Q2...the light wouldn't work. It was gone for three months, maybe four, but it worked when I got it back. Runs like a champ.

That's four. The fifth was a Stealth (DC only) J Class from the Norfolk & Weatern. BLI issued the Stealth series at the same time as they were issuing the first QSI's and the BlueLine series. This loco was from an etailer. The loco hesitated like it was out of quartering. My decoder installer geek/friend said a gear was split. I contacted BLI and they agreed to service it under warranty, five years into it's shelf life. Not too shabby. It came back two months later running well.

My latest two purchases in steam have been BLI's refurbished deals. First was a BlueLine A Class 2-6-6-4. It's a real beauty. It was perfect when my installer tore out the BlueLine sound decoder and installed a QSI Titan. It looks great and runs great.

I have just ordered a Pennsy I1 with short tender from the refurbished deals at BLI. I waited until the price dropped from their orignial 30% off until they showed 40% off. All I had to do was to keep a watch for three weeks while they sat there. Apparently, quite a few other watchers were keeping an eye as well, because seven of them disappeared with a couple of days when the price dropped.

What am I getting at? If you like steam, and would like to continue liking steam, count on the better importers to make them right, but not by supper time the next day. They may not have the parts, but those parts come with the next run. BLI returns to any one run within about 24 months to three years. My PCM Y6b needed a whole new front engine. Those are not likely to be sitting collecting dust two years after the last run of that locomotive. Mine coincided with a recent run, and I was lucky.

Bachmann and BLI are about the only two mainstream HO steamer producers for N. American steam. MTH has a niche market, and I know squat about them or their service history. Recently I have seen negative reports, but BLI had a bad spell between 2009 and 2011. Every corporation has a bad spell, more if they have a history spanning more than a decade.

These models, believe it or not, are not precision instruments. They aren't the $2000 microscopes you'd see in a lab. They aren't dentist's drill sets. If you'd like that quality and reliability, you couldn't afford the hobby in steam, and probably hardly in diesel. Didn't Life Like have a huge split gear problem eight years ago? Yes, they did, but in diesels, not steamers. I have a Life Like Proto 2000 Heritage Series 0-6-0 that is as pretty and as detailed as a brass one costing four times as much, and it runs well.

Guys, last thing: steam isn't for everyone, just like propellar driven aircraft don't appeal to all those in RC aircraft clubs. But for those of us who grew up with steam, and who like all the sliding, rocking, clanking, reciprocating, and rotating rods and levers, being able to watch them in miniature form whenever we want to is a huge form of satisfaction. For me, while I really do admire and like the looks of the SD70ACe, and would be very pleased to have one, when it comes to that or a Pennsy I1, it just isn't a contest...not even close. There's nothing going on when they run past, although the sound is pretty impressive. The ground doesn't shake like it did in my youth when a steamer went past me while I stood trackside. The dynamic augment from the reciprocating mass isn't there with diesels, just that deep roar.

It's just not the same. Our models do a great job of replicating that, but when you consider the cost, compared to brass especially, we have to expect some inconvenience from time-to-time.
