Even though I've been visiting this forum for a while, I had never bothered to look at the coffee shop thread...
Since my Dad died of a heart attack at 50 years old, his brother of a heart attack at 51, and their sister from cancer at 46... in the '70's this got me to looking for some way to go down a different path than they did.
I took note of their lifestyle similarities, and the biggest one being that they were culturally very heavy meat eaters, so I went in the opposite direction from them. It took about 5 years to gradually get off of eating meat so that there were no side effects from a sudden diet change. During the holidays each year I noticed that I would always get the flu like clockwork. I also noted that coincidentally was a time of heavy meat consumption from the traditional holiday meals. So by 1979, I was eating everything in our holiday meals except the entrees which contained meat... and to this day have never gotten the flu again.
While this is only personal anecdotal experience, nontheless it has led me to the conclusion that many health issues are self inflicted, and the solution is simply to discover the behavior which causes them and cease to do it. It's like the old joke:
"Doc, it hurts when I do this."
"Then don't to it."
