Jeffrey,

Who's feedmill kit is that? Wood or plastic?

Have you ever used india ink washes for weathering? I did a restaurant a while back and the manufacturer suggested an ink wash after painting. the ink is pretty dilute, 8 or 9 parts alcohol to 1 part ink, and can be applied by airbrush or with a plain old soft bristle brush, and it's really subtle. You can build it up until it looks right to you. If you're inclined, try it out. Your mill looks good, I just have found the ink wash works really well with lighter colors (my restaurant was a tan color). Try it in a small area away from trackside, or on a scrap piece of painted material. Plus, India ink and alcohol are cheap! :D a bottle of each will cost you less than 5 bucks total and make enough wash to last you, oh, 20 years or so!

It's a Walthers Cornerstone plastic kit. On some models I still use a wash of black acrylic paint and alcohol applied with a pump sprayer.

That would work too, and probably better on plastic. The ink wash requires a porous surface for the best look. The flat coat helps on plastic surfaces.

I use Valspar Clear Flat for the flat coat.

Well today I did my grocery shopping at the new grocery store in Leesville. In the Future I'll be doing the majority of my grocery shopping at Wal-Mart. I spent what I normally do at Wal-Mart getting the same or as close to the same items I get there at the lowest prices I could find and still came out with a little over half as much. One trip from the van to the house whereas it normally takes two trips. Money talks.

Hey guys,

Thank you all for the Happy Birthdays!

Jeff- Nice mill!

Corey- Driving is fantastic! I absolutely love driving. My parents seem to think I'm ok at it too.

Have a great day everyone,
Matt

Good morning. It's 73° and sunny. The high will be 92°, sunny and cloudy with a 30% chance of thunderstorms.

Didn't get a chance to do it yesterday so I'll likely be clearing the work clutter from the layout today.

I bought some 95% fat free microwave butter popcorn yesterday that's sold under a well-known brand name. Never again! There was no trace of the color of butter nor even the taste of it. Overall the taste was like chewing on cardboard. I'll not be buying that brand again.

After about ten years of use my old foam mattress pad was worn out. I got a new one yesterday for $10. First good nights sleep I've had in a while.

Well its be a quiet week in Lake Wobegone, as Garrison Kealer would say....

Pam and I celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary Wed. with a quiet dinner out with our 21 month old grandson. He was the entertainment!:D I think he tried to talk to every booth in sight there and a few others that weren't!!;) He was a lot of fun for us. Thursday was our actual anniversary, but Pam had to work and I had a treatment. Didn't want to possible mess up the celebration if I had a bad reaction to it. Which so far I haven't.:)

My friend Warren is coming over today to do some work with me on the layout. We have to cut some new roadbed. That's gonna be real dusty!:( After that we'll probably be laying it onto the sub road bed in Mulberry and at Confederate Hill Mining.

A couple of weeks ago, we cut enough spline to possibly finish the entire layout, but I still need to get some more wood for the framework. As it is now the layout bench work is 70% complete, with the last bench work for the last 3 towns needing to be finished.

I figure that its another year to a year and a half before we start on scenery.:p;) (yeah, right!)

I've also got 4 locos to get ready for the club's op sessions at another layout. Got to see what's caused one to jam and not run, 3 others to install lights and decoders into. I also have another that acts like it's losing pickup while its running. Its an older brass locomotive, and it has a spring suspension in it that reminds me a lot of the old Varney "Super" series of loco kits. Instead of individual springs for each axle, there is one piece of wire that runs from a stud on each end of the frame that the axles rest on. Replacing those wires with some new ones is gonna be a bear without rebuilding the frame. I'm also going to install some Tomar shoes on this loco to make the pickup even better.

Well got to go, spent a good day with Rex just talking, making plans and telling lies to each other after my treatment yesterday! I think that we both needed that!;)

Gonna have to do some work on the van in the morning. Something's fouled up in the ignition wiring. Start it up an dit runs like it should. If I cut it off and turn the key back to the accessory position real quick the engine stays running. I moved a jumper in the fuse box this morning while I was tracking down a short that turned out to be a wire pinched between the engine cover and the cowling. So that could be it. It's the first thing I'll check in the morning. It didn't do this before the jumper was moved. I hope it's that easy.

Aren't grandkids a hoot!!!! My grandson is 18 months and loves to wave at everybody. Not quite as verbal as he could be, but does make his wants known...LOL
And Happy 38th anniversary. My wife and I are about 10 years behind you as we had our 28th this past May.
Grandkids are a hoot, no arguement here! I'm looking foreward to Sunday, as the will be up for a swimming/end of summer party.:D

"Grampa, we want this one out!"

Happy anniversary CJ & Mrs CJ!:D Today was our 4th:D Looks like we got some catchin up to do!

Good morning. It's 73°, wet and raining. The high today is forecast to be 85°. There's a 60+% chance of rain and thunderstorms this morning and afternoon increasing to 80% tonight.

This mornings weather statement for this area as follows:

PROBABILITY OF TROPICAL STORM/HURRICANE CONDITIONS... AS CURRENTLY ASSESSED...THE ONSET OF EITHER TROPICAL STORM OR HURRICANE CONDITIONS IS UNLIKELY TO OCCUR.

...WINDS... TROPICAL CYCLONE WATCHES OR WARNINGS ARE CURRENTLY NOT IN EFFECT...NOR ARE THEY LIKELY UNDER PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES.

THE LATEST FORECAST IS FOR MAXIMUM WINDS TO REMAIN BELOW TROPICAL STORM FORCE.

A large swath of showers continue to fall across southern Louisiana and the adjacent coastal waters. Showers are moving to the south this morning while the larger area continues it's drift off to the west. Hourly rainfall totals are running about 1/2 inch. Visibility in the heavier squalls will drop to about 1/2 mile. Rains will continue through the morning hours.

Got the vans electrical problem sorted out. It was just what I thought it was. A jumper I moved was connected to the wrong contact. Moving it to the proper contact corrected the problem. Took about two minutes.

We're having a slow rain here. That's good as we need it. I just hope it doesn't go overboard and flood the area. My home is safe enough as it's over thirty feet above the normal lake level and twenty-eight feet above the top of the dam. The only two roads out of here however are another matter. One good thing is that the lake is down by three feet but with enough water coming in it will soon be back to it's normal level. If the water continues coming in faster than the spillway can drain it off it will begin to rise above that normal level and we have the start of a flood. If it comes up four feet above normal lake level the water comes onto the roads. Anything above that raises the water level on the roads and we have a problem, not to mention that my nephew and his friends will be finding ways to ferry folks across, for a fee of course. Hopefully it won't come to that. Last time this happened the roads were three feet under water in places.

Pam and I celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary Wed.

Happy 38th ya old fart! :p

I figure that its another year to a year and a half before we start on scenery.:p;) (yeah, right!)

Got your grass mat yet, or will you be going with green spray paint? ;) (I know how much CJ loves doing scenery folks! :D)

I also have another that acts like it's losing pickup while its running. Oh I HATE that suspension system. Typical of early Overland steamers. Not only a PITA to reinstall, but the model will generally attempt to re-kit itself during the process. Good luck with replacing the wires!

Early Overland stuff and late PFM models made in Korea by Samhongsa are loaded with cold joints, as you probably know. I have reached the point where I will no longer take them in. The amount of remedial work to get them stable and running makes it impossible to make any money, and runs my blood pressure up too high. Best thing for them is half a dozen whacks with a five pound sledge

PS: Liz could not believe hope remembered LAR, and returned a message: Litter Bitter!

Take care!

Good morning all! A wet day here on the Gulf Coast. I poured 3" of rain out of the rain gauge last night and another 1" this morning.

Jeffery, get your snorkal out I think it may get deep over your way.

CJ, Congrats to you and Pam on your 38th wedding aniversary.

Alan, CJ has to use a grass mat or crayons. LOL

I've know CJ over 30 years and I don't think I have ever seen any scenery that he built. This could be interesting.

Well, it is still raining. I poured another 2.3" out a couple of hours ago. That's over 6" in the last 24 to 36 hours.

I did make it out to Home Depot to get plastic conduit pieces so I could extend the 110V circuit under the layout.

Guess, I need to get back to work as the electrical work has the layout down and the op session is next Sat.

I gotsed my self a 1972 Chevy Monte Carlo last Monday. My son in-law Jamey and I went and looked at it last Sat afternoon. It was a 160 mile drive to see it and it turned out to be a very solid car. I checked out the body while he went over the mechanical s with a fine tooth comb. It has a 350CI 290 horse crate motor with 4,000 miles on it hooked up to a 700R4 overdrive tranny. After talking to the better half she decided I could purchase the car so's we went up last Monday and retrieved it. 17.5 MPH and I was home in just over 3 hours. Jamey said it was a twenty footer which it was. From 20 feet it was great but closer it was not quite that good. After twelve hours of wet sanding and buffing he told me today it was a 5 footer. We took it to a car show today it was one of the top 30 cars there out of over 80 cars and trucks entered int he show. Not bad for a first timer with 39 yr old car.
