Diesel Detail Freak
Since I have not posted much of my actual modeling recently, here's something new... (I tried to post this at 2:30PM PST, but the page was not loading).

I recently shelled out some cash for a Kinsmart Dodge Ram 1500, in white. I decided, that even though BNSF does not use much other then Ford's there "could have been" a Dodge Ram 1500. My excuse is the local dealer was getting rid of old models cheap, and BNSF needed a replacement truck... As you can see, I need some replacement wheels, those FUGLY chrome thingamabobbers are not gonna make due.

Lol! Yeah, I've been on a buying binge, trying to replace RPP Dash 9's, and add to to collection. I decided it was time to actually DO something with something.

I have a BNSF Dash 9 I'd love to unveil, but I need a certain decal first.

Lol, yeah, I think these are even worse them some real ones though. Cheap plastic... Up close they have the design of a Viper's wheels!

Thats one purty truck, Josh! I have a white Busch Chevy Suburban that'll probably be getting some CSX decals on it - one of these days...

If its an inkject, make sure it uses Durabrite(TM) ink.
Sure does, thus why I asked for it. Top feed too, which is what I need for my business cards (the current HP is a bottom feed, bottom discharge, and it eats the print your own business card sheets).

I've never had a whole lot of luck with the top feed - bottom discharge, at least in the laser field (not many other options in the inkjet field anymore). I prefer the original bottom feed-top discharge HP laserjet style.

What, pray tell is durabrite(tm) ink, and how can you insure you have it?

i model 1/24 trucks also. mostly macks. i have my layout just below my truck models.

Durabrite is Epson's water proof ink, consciouses seems to be that it works best for inkjet decal printing.

As for my printer, its a bottom feed-bottom discharge, in about 1/2" radius flip, so anything ticker then plain paper snags.

Nice trucks there, Mack. That's quite a grill guard on the third one. And yes, a lot of us still model, even when buying RTR and improving them. Here are two police cars I detailed, the black and white is a Busch and the Black sheriff's car is a Model Power. Those tiny decals are a real challenge in HO scale, not to mention the spotlights, antennas, and push bars. :)

Type of Epson printer.

Say Josh,

Which model of Epson printer are you considering?

To give you the best ability for printing decals and photos by all means stick to a photo quality printer with ink droplet sizes of at least 2 Picoliters or smaller which I'm fairly sure the R800 is in fact it might be 1.5 Picoliters which is finer detail yet! The R260 might be ok too but a better one would be the R800 if your looking for and 8.5 x 11 printer. These both have individual ink cartridges for each of the colors which is the way to go. That way you only replace the cartridge that runs out rather than having to discarding unused ink in a multi-chambered cartridge.

I imagine that both will use the dura bright ink cartridges but the Epson site is the best source of info so check there.

As far as the ink being water proof that would seem to be a logical choice but it depend on the medium being printed on as to the ink that can be used.

According to one of the sources for decal sheets I have they say to let the ink dry for about hour or more and then the surface of the decal needs to be sprayed or lightly coated by brush with a sealer of one type or another, I also have Dry transfer decal sheets plus Tack coating for the decals available.

HTH,

David

Good plan! I need to whip off some New Image BNSF ones, hopefully my wife buys me that Epson printer I want.

Thanks David, I never knew what the heck the Picoliters was. I was actually looking at the CX8400. That R800 sounds more tasty, the price is up there though, and has not scanner so I'll have to hang onto my HP all-in-one. None of the Epson all-in-ones have anything less then 3 Picoliters. :(

Oh well, thanks for teaching me something new there, R800 it is...
