Just counting the engines that are NIB from Atlas and Proto 2000 and figuring even a good discount at a LHS I'd say it is a steal at $700. The Athearn stuff sounds like older issues that when new were in the mid 20 dollar range except for the DD40. Still, they are worth something if they run and aren't damaged. Bunches of rolling stock and buildings and misc is a plus maybe depending on condition and truck or other upgrades, etc. So my thinking is you are paying for the new engines at a very sweet deal and everything else is a super bonus.

Not much to think about really. If I had an extra 700 clams I'd do it.

I was one of the 2 (so far) "don't bother" responses. From what you list, most of the stuff, the "state of the art" has passed it by. A lot of it is good, solid stuff, but the newer things are so much nicer, crisper paint and lettering, better detailing, the older stuff looks, well, dated.
Based on descriptions only, I'd probably pay about $500 for the whole mess. But, you are there, the collection is there, if it's things you want anyway (for the most part) and can see and touch it, you can pick it up. If you can sell what you don't want, great, but don't count on selling the stuff you don't want to pay for the stuff you do.

You need to ask yourself:
Do I want, up to the transition/early 60's time era?
Will I use DCC and willing to make modifications for this?
Are the scenery/buildings the kind I want on my layout?
What is the condition of the track? Is it brass or N/S?

You wouldn't want this purchase or a bargain dictate the answers to the above questions. I believe you would regret getting into an era or design only because that is what you bought. Still, I believe its not a bad price, but would also try for $500.

I would offer less money too , like 400-500 bucks. Then keep what you want. then if you want to mess around trying to sell all the stuff you don't want on Ebay then go for it. You may find out the hard way though that all that glitters aint gold.
Me? For my time and money , I wouldn't even bother.

How many of the locomotives are DCC reasy or even easy to convert to DCC? How much do you want old steam engines that may not even work? How many of the freights cars missing things like stirrup steps or brake wheels? Do you have an easy way (other than e-bay) to sell what you don't want and still make a profit? My first instinct is to say don't bother since you'll be getting a lot of stuff you probably won't want (especially since you don't have a layout) and getting rid of things when to another buyer almost always results in a loss.

Almost everything is new in the boxes what isnt new was marked as used.

also added what there is for rolling stock.

to answer your questions.
1.As far as dcc items ect not a 100% sure.

2.Sure id take broke down steamers if i cant fix em i got a guy that can LOL.

3.All items are new in the boxes, unless they were stated other wise that and ive seen the stuff.

4. Using ebay for me is no problem as ive been buying and selling on there for about 10 years now, plus i have local shows, ect..

5. Nope I currently dont have a layout since the room is being renovated, which i dont think is ever going to get done, which is why i do the buying and selling and all the refurbishing i do. It keeps me active in this hobby that i like even though i currently cant run trains.

Hope that explains some to ya. Like i said my main objective for this poll was just to see what others would do if they had the chance. Also I already know the decision that I made before i made this post. Which ill reveal later tonight. This thread was in no way or form to help me decide.

Since money is extremely tight for me these days, I have to be very careful of how I spend each hobby dollar. Buying an entire 'estate' lot doesn't appeal to me, I want to invest in new stuff - preferably when the items are on sale at Walthers or the LHS. So I clicked the "don't bother" box.

Of course my circumstances are different from yours, so it doesn't really matter...

Stang, it sounds like you've already made the decision to buy the lot. I hope it works out well for you. Be sure to list things you don't want here first and save a few bucks on e-bay. Some of the stuff sounds pretty nice.

Yes i did infact choose to purchace the lot. Oh ill definatly show everything off and offer things on here and a few other boards before it goes to ebay, might even hold on to the stuff not wanted for a few shows coming up, then go the ebay route if there is anything.

I just thought it be interesting to see other peoples thoughts.
