Many thnx for your feedback. and i definitely see it as feedback and help to think and get better! thats why i posted the picture. i have to say the black was added just random, i was thinking maybe someday there was something standing there that created the exhaust look alike. above the door could be maybe there was once a fire in there who knows. but it is maybe a bit too much.

i will let it like this but will maybe try to tone down the side walls. like you say color may differ an every wall and especially outside walls. so i see it as a learning structure where i can try out and test things. in the end if iam not happy when its on the layout i maybe repaint it, but for now i will stick to it and try to maybe fix it up a little. thank you again for your comment.

about my shelf layout, thats maybe 1m30 (aprox. 4feet) above ground. The shelf itself is around 2 feet deep. you can find my building thread here.

cheers

Jay. Glad you are taking it as I had intended. You don’t have to remove anything but add some colors to blend what you have done. Feathering out the black above the door way is where I would start.

What I do on structures is paint it, I don’t usually prime. Let it sit a couple days and add a clear coat. Let that dry then fade and weather. But again, there is no wrong way and if or when YOU are happy with it that’s what it’s all about.

Thanks for the layout info and I will go check out your thread…

Tom, I missed those Amazon containers. Hope they run them again.
I have read mixed responses about ST running them again. Some say they won’t be run because of licensing and others say that’s not an issue. I’m glad I got them when I could buying 30 of the Amazon Prime and 18 of the WalMart. I have already sold off for crazy pricing the Walmart containers. I had resisted offers on the Amazon Prime containers but my thinking on running stack trains on the layout is changing, so I sold 12

JTC is taking supposedly pre-orders on HO scale Amazon Prime containers till 5/31. $50 per 2 pack. But, that was a FB post and when I go to the horrible JTC website I can’t find them?!?

Edit:
Found it! 3 packs at $60

Hogtrainz has them up for pre-order for $43.95 a 3 pack.

Sometimes you just have to start over. I enjoy creating rust buckets but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. Started a car on Thursday the 23rd. Worked on it in the afternoon of the 24th and at 11pm on the 24th looked at it again. By 11:30 it had been stripped down to be started over this morning

The start

About the only things I did like was the weathering on the ladders and later how easy it was to strip it.

It was an undocumented strip down. I will get a picture before I start again.

Edit: this was originally posted to my FB page Wisconsin River Valley Terminal Railroad in HO scale, I cut and pasted here

The rain started about 7:30 this morning and has been fairly steady since. A couple down pours but I have not yet checked the accumulation beaker in the front yard. So, I found myself at the weathering bench, instead of running trains because of projects on the tracks

3 covered hoppers. They’ve been faded and a spray of overall grime added. The end panels will get a darker shade of track/wheel splatter. The ladders will get touches of a light rust. The support brackets holding up the roof walks will get touches of a darker rust but not anything overboard!

The diesel ( not pictured here) has its grime coating and some excessive heat markings on the side panels

All works in process

Tom - I started on a new batch of old timers, these are the before photos:

You can see the ones on the right have a little work previously done.

The middle one on the left is a CN gondola, I googled it and find that new logo came out in 1966, that one is going into the dumpster after I salvage the couplers; it is way too modern for my layout. These old models only bring about a dollar on ebay and just not worth the hassle.

The tank car above is about my best one, in my estimation. I found a prototype photo, for the life of me I could not find it to reproduce. The point is they had some of the stain running down from the center of the car, which I duplicated at the P, I also got some light rust around the fill cover and a couple other places.

Still working on the others, just have the initial dull coat on them but not the white wash yet.

Why ? you could turn it into a rust bucket or re-paint it, even just patch over the logo

The Phillips66 tank car is showing off your weathering skills, nicely done. My suggestion only is to dull coat the trucks and wheels but I love it. This definitely shows the less is more approach works.

Those cars will be fun to weather

Agreed, the trucks and wheels need it too. That has been bugging me a little.

THANKS Tom!

Smudge - I am really anal about era. That gond has a CN logo that wasn't created until 1966. I have nothing newer than 1940 on my layout, that is where I draw the line.

Plus, I have two pretty nice Great Northern gonds that are era specific, will have to get them out...

Thanks for commenting! - Dave

Ah! I'm with you then, I would suggest you throw it in my direction but your arms aren't long enough and I'm rubbish at catching anything other than a cold. :D
