Weathering Engines a Continuous thread.

This was the paint scheme for the first 2 years of production. Just before the tiger stripe began.

I don't even know if this is the right place for these.

I found an old photo album I had forgotten about from my youth. Pictures were printed on textured stock, so the photos looked dimply.

1976 - San Jose, CA - Bascom Ave SP yard....and the Freedom Train.

The entire engine facility (roundhouse, turntable, sanders, water, etc) are long gone.☹️

UPDATE: I did a little online search and (phase III) GP9E 3187 was used for commuter train service (CalTrain) out of San Jose.

This is the 6th Top Hat I have weathered this year! I have done 3 others for this owner and I am going off a picture he took that unfortunately he will not let me show!!!

Anyway on the conductor side there is a strange square that I’m not getting right but I sent this picture to him
IMG_9250.jpeg

Those lines that look like bare spots going downward will be rust streaks! The fade matches the picture the truck frames will have a couple sprays of 2 more colors. The vents and grills are starting to rust and are painted burnt umber #71.040 from Vallejo Air

The NS and stripe on this locomotive in 2010 had some chipping starting and that is next up. The file and air tanks have what looks like a reddish earth tone to them but I asked the client to confirm that as there is no reddish color on the truck frames just various browns, the rust I have applied will be blended by a earth tone color not quite brown nor black, so I will blend those and see what I get

Good looking units. I was wondering how you’d do these units. Heritage units are usually the cleanest diesels around. Have fun with them…
I've been watching a few videos, the tops have some exhaust soot on the top and the trucks are a little faded/ dirty. A light coat of grimy black should dull it down enough. I'm keeping these fairly clean.

A few things I noticed on these engines that Scale Trains added was, the anti glare on the nose top, blacken the vents on the rear air intakes, and added the DP decal for DPU unit.
Definitely good looking units and Scaletrains has definitely forced the industry to up their games. I really like the anti-glare feature added. I had not noticed the blackening of the vents and air intakes! That’s great. I like where the weathering on the unit went. Heritage units are usually nice and clean.

I know I have asked before but what do you use for the grimy black roof exhaust? Mine is usually to black or too gray!

Thanks for sharing

A month ago I was stocking up on paint and came across Vallejo black gray. Ordered it because it looked very much like grimy black. I really like it, seems a bit more gray than black or a bit lighter than the grimy black. I used it on the exhaust and trucks.

I’ve used Mission Models’ (MM) “Anthracite” to do sooty roofs of my steam-era rolling stock. I dry-brush it on for roof soot, airbrush it on for the bogeys for the diesels I’ve done.

The paint in the bottle I bought is very thick; I believe by design, as the bottle was sealed, but lacked the squeeze hole port that allows squeezing it out in drops. It was just a fully open mouth, unlike other MM paints I’ve bought.
