Thanks Tom... I used Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black, I'm going to guess at about 30% XF-1 to 70% of 50% IPA.
I actually was wanting to add this pic in my post but I was over the 10 file limit, but I can add it here.

The S-2 is a work in process. A heavily used but not abused local unit and owner/modeler is based in the Pacific Northwest where it is damp.
The fading is irregular per design. With one side the conductor side not as faded as the engineer side. The rust is to illustrate that this is a work unit and basically affects just the grills, vents and truck frames. He plows ends need more work and per pictures rusting edges below the coupler but not the full panels. The credit is in the frame of the picture
Fading was done with Tamiya white and IPA thinner in a 20% to 80% mix. I did add 2 drops of light gray to the mix.
Rust is Panzer Aces #301 light rust mixed 50/50 and applied with a brush to let it flow into the seams. The front grills it was applied and then blotted off and I like the effect.
The top portion of the unit will be worked on Wednesday. More F…ing labs today

Not only does this S-2 looks good in my limited test runs it moves great, nice and smooth

Good afternoon.
The S-2 is closer but still a work in process
I did clear coat the unit after the last posting of pictures. I sprayed Tamiya x-86 thinned with Tamiya thinner x-20a roughly 40% thinner to the 60% clear. This was sprayed at about 18psi. I did not add any x-21 flat base to this mix the as fade and weathering is where I want it
I did add rust to the front and rear plow panels this morning. I may need to add some texture to get the look I want but because the locomotive is based in the PNW I’m not sure the texture is needed. I will revisit this in the morning.
The plow panels are clear coated so any changes are easily made.Maybe thinning and streakier rust spots?

Something strictly for me. I weather rolling stock and locomotives. My painting of models and the interior of the house have been over for a few years.
At the recommendation and encouragement from Greg McComas I sent 2 brand new Athearn Genesis gp40-2L’s to Sammy Carlile’s Carco Shops Inc. in Oklahoma to be stripped and painted into my Wisconsin Interstate. I picked them up this morning from the BNSF Marais Pass as Sammy was visiting Alan Schroeder’s wonderful layout a few weekends ago as part of a visit to a couple River Rail layouts
Terry and I were out that weekend crossing the Midwest to the Southwest and even though invited I couldn’t attend! Alan was kind enough to hold the units for me.
I love them and I promised myself to refrain from weathering them any more than what Sammy has already (lightly) done. (I promise, really! 6 months real time at least)

The paint is TruColor Wisconsin Central Maroon and Alaska Railroal Yellow. Grills and exhaust are weathered with AK Interactive’s engine exhaust. I will touch up the wheels and truck frames with Vallejo Air burnt umber. Then I will wait before I grime up the units

The start to another NS 9-40c Top Hat 6 axle diesel. This is a Scaletrains offering
The fade is Tamiya xf-white thinned with x20a thinner with a couple drops of xf-80 Royal light gray added, air brushed
The trucks and fuel tanks are Vallejo Model Color #70.941 Burnt Umber 50/50 thinned with water. Then overbrushed straight from the bottle Tamiya Black Panel liner.
Grills, latches and grill work were brushed with Vallejo Air burnt umber #71.040 straight dabbed on and then pulled down with a dry flat brush
Fun with trains!

Good morning! I have unboxed some equipment to be weathered. Included is 2 diesels.
SP GE44 toner in the Tiger Stripe scheme from Rapido. The unit from removed from the packaging and inspected for broken parts. Then because it is DCC I tested it on my layout. What a great little unit!

After testing I moved the unit to be masked and then cleaned
The second unit to be weathered is a Paragon EMD NW2 SP#1949. When I inspect this unit I will add pictures to the thread. Forum member Marlin39 asked these be weathered similar to a S-2 I did for him previously.

Remember I use prototype pictures for inspiration and guidance. Here I am using the prototype photo for seeing what the weathering pattern is like. Where the dusty powdery gray color is coming off the top of the hood of the locomotive and how the front end flows onto the plow. My use of colors is different the powdery gray is a rust color with eventually some grayness included.
The colors added to the truck frames have over powered the original covering of rust which of course I do not have a picture of and I liked them
Please remember you are seeing these pictures during the process. This is far from being a weathered diesel
