I just finished weathering 7 coal cars, only 30 more to go. It took about an hour for each car. You can see some of the not weathered Reading cars trailing the drag. This is why you have to weather your cars.

WOW what a huge difference!! They look great, did you use chalks?
Josh first I took a fine brush and used some polly Scale d&rgw bldg. brown to paint the top and inside the car with a little rust mixed in here and there. Then I painted the wheels and trucks with the same paint. Third I hit the whole car with the alcohol Indian ink mix. After that I used a small square brush to lightly paint the out side rib reinforcements with some slightly diluted Polly Scale rust. Do not get this on the car body, if you do hit it quickly with some Indian ink alcohol mix otherwise it will leave a stain. After that I used black, grey, dark rust and rust chalks to finish.

Wow, what a difference. You're right, George, if you're going to run coal trains, you have to learn how to weather. Good job.
Looks a lot better George!
I'll have to get going on mine, some 50 cars to go!
Thanks guys. I just did a few more. This time I didn’t paint the ribs, I wanted the cars to look less rusted. They came out well. I painted the ribs on the first batch because I don’t spray the cars so the painted ribs helps when you handle them. If you plan on doing some cars I would just use chalks, it’s very hard to correct your mistakes with paint.

They look really nice, job well done. Did you put a final cout of Dulecoat on the cars? I'm sure over time the chalks will come off if you didn't/don't.
Dave
No Dave I didn't use Dulecoat. I painted the ribs on this bunch to give the cars a more rusty look. If I sprayed them it would have made a huge different between the paint on the ribs and the chalk on the body. The next group I not painting the ribs so we'll see how it goes.
George
Hey George those cars look great and very prototypical. I would suggest however that you seal them with Dull-Cote. If you mix the bottle stuff 50/50 with laquer thinner, spray it at 15psi, at a distance of at LEAST 6", and a cpl very light coats.......it won't change the weathering you did at all.
Otherwise, if you or anyone else happens to grab hold of the side of one of those cars, not only will it leave a nice CSI acceptable fingerprint, it will eave a bare spot on the car as the oil in your skin will lift the powder right off.
I'm sure you already know this, but I would hate to see you upset after it happens, and it will

Done it a few times myself! lol
You do excellent work, George!
Those last 2 cars look like a model RR...
The rest of that drag looks like Harlan County, KY
