I'm planning an open house/fundraiser for Dec. to support the horse sanctuary that I run.

so. I'm wondering, what would I do to attract people who are not necessarily horse crazy, but who might have a sort of "latent" (haha) interest in them?

I'm having demonstrations of all the rescued horses in the arena, they'll be brought out one at a time, and I'll be sharing their stories with the audience.

there will be horses in their stalls, with printed histories and backgrounds.

horses will be in the aisle, for people to meet and greet, and there will also be a vet. doing a demonstration of tooth care, a farrier doing a hoof trimming shoeing demo.

there will be mini riding lessons, and the horses that can do things, will be doing them, like being ridden, driven, excercised, or just let loose in the arena to run around and play.

a coffee bar, with cookies. hot chocolate.

a display and sale of books, paintings, sculpture, all horse related.

christmas carolers, strolling throughout the barn, arena, loft, and outside.

a horse and wagon to bring people from the road and back, in case it gets too crowded for parking.

lots of volunteers to answer questions.

lots of christmas decorations, and a tree where you can make a donation, and hang an ornament.

A display of hay, grain, etc. and an explanation of what, and how much they eat every day.

admission by donation, if you like.

sign up for private riding lessons.

would that be an appealing outing for people? just one day, from 10 til 3.

any suggestions?

oh, and a live auction, with items donated by local businesses. including things like a pie from the local famous pie place, maybe a book from the bookstore, massages, manicures, wine from the local winery, etc, etc.

I've got three newspapers coming next week to do a story before the event, and to take photos.

I know for a fact from watching auto dealerships how they attract attention is with FREE Food! 40% of the retirees and Cheap people like me down here can't refuse a Free Hot dog and soda! Some People seem to be willing to crawl through broken glass to get out of paying for a meal! I know, I'll crawl through a land mine field for free food!!!LOL's J/K But honestly, "Free Food" always works! Check with Coke or Pepsi Dist. in your area if your a Registered non profit they will lend you a trailer and pay for half of the soda and hotdogs for your event!

Sounds like you've done a very impressive amount of work and planning for this event. Even though I'm not a horse person, I'd pay to come and see the show and my daughters would love to get to pet the horses. I predict a rousing success for a good cause. :)

Along with the newspapers, make sure the local radio and TV media is involved. Maybe the TV station(s) can do a story the evening before, and maybe the radio station can do a live on-the-spot report.

I'm writing these down, thanks very much!
I just started this thing on Thursday. I have 4 weeks to scare up enough volunteers, get all the donations in place, do the advertising, put up flyers, (heck find someone to PRINT flyers, since I don't have a printer)
and do all the other stuff thats involved.

I really like to get into things in a big way, it seems!

keep the suggestions coming.

CTV, down here we have a pre evening news hour called "Live at Five". They do promos of events, charity, local or visiting artists etc. I'm sure if you were local to the Atlantic Prov's they would have interviewers and cameras out there and really do a job for you. If you can get a human interest awareness story going, either on TV or newspapers you'll have it made. You just have to get the info out there and that it's a promotion to help save the horses.

Cheers
Willis

Most Print shops will print stuff for free for a non-profit or your local paper would probably be glad to do it for you. A nice picture on the flyers would be great too. Colored flyers would be even better w/a horse pic.
I use to do things for the local roller rink for school day. You'd be surprised how much free stuff you can get printed if you let them put their co. name or newspaper on the bottom of the flyer.
Hope you have a lot of help in your venture!!

LTF- I cannot believe you are involved with "hay horses" when you could be playing with "iron horses". I'll never understand women!LOL
Have you settled on a date yet?
If not, the weekend between Christmas and New Years may find people ready to unwind from the Christmas rush. It sounds like you have lots of fun, diverse activities to keep people's attention for several hours.
We wish you the best of luck with the weather, too!

snork.

the feelings mutual. I worked with ONLY men for years, and STILL have no idea how they operate!!! :D :D :D

Dec. 20 is the day. Sat down today with some volunteers, and worked out some fliers, and various other things that need to be printed.

our day is starting to really take shape!

and after THAT is over, and the holidays, I'll start working on train benches, layouts, etc. for the train room in the BARN! :D

LTF- How is the Open House going?
Hope you have things as under control as herding a dozen cats.

Take a deep breath, do your best and make notes on what you want to do differently next time.
We will keep our fingers crossed and say a little prayer for you and the "hay burners".
Mikey

Have a professional photographer take pics of folks (esp kids!) on the horses. Sell the prints. It's ok if the photographer makes a bit of money on each, work with him/her.

Find one that has done "event photography" and ask how they would handle it.

thanks for all the suggestions! (those we didn't use this time around, well, I think i'll do this again in summer!)

The day was PERFECT! on Thursday/Friday, the snow storms were so bad that pretty much everything was shut down.
Sat. morning, it was sunny, clear, COLD, but the roads were good, and it was a lovely day.
Had LOTS of people out, raised nearly $1,600, got a lot of people interested in the horses, and in helping out as volunteers.
what a great day. If I can get that many people out braving the sub-zero weather so close to Christmas when they're all busy, then I think I can get even MORE out on a nice day in June.

The Monday before, I was relaxing, after dinner, listening to the wind howling, and turning up the furnace because the temp. was dropping so fast.
Someone was POUNDING at my door, which was a real surprise, since my driveway is pretty much the longest in the province, and no one really comes out unless I'm expecting them.

There's some guy, asking for the former tennant. He had a horse he thought she would be interested in, I told him she wasn't around anymore, what was the horse?

he says its old and quiet, he can't use him as a breeding stallion, wants $100 for him, would I be interested?
I told him I don't buy horses. BUT, where was he, I would have a look.

The horse in on the trailer, which is parked in front of the barn. (huge sigh, here. )

so.

The horse is in the barn, for $0. over 30 years old, missing most of his molars, and I've had a LOT of extremely skinny horses come in over the years, but I've never seen anything THIS thin still alive. Thin doesn't even begin to describe it. I didn't think the horse would make it through the night, so I left him a pile of straw in the barn aisle, gave him a bale of hay to chew on, and went to bed, expecting to find him dead in the barn next morning.

here it is, a week later, he's eating like he hasn't eaten in months, looking brighter and interested in his surroundings. Greets me every morning.

I named him Hemmingway, and he gets a sort of porridge 4 X a day.

He made a lot of people cry on Sat.

I'll post a pic when I get one.

Aww, LTF, that's a nice story. It sounds like you have the same attraction for stray horses as I seem to have for stray cats. :) I'm glad to hear the Hemmingway is improving. I'm sure loving care does as much as food sometimes.

You're right, if you got all those people out in the middle of subzero weather near Christmas, you should be able to attract a real mob in the summer. Knowing how much it takes just feed four cats, I'm sure the money will also help. Those horses must go through a ton of food a day.

Merry Christmas.

I know a couple barn cats.....
Well I'll be darned if I'll mention about my dogs :D
Beautiful Christmas story Sandy, good for you. Yes it's not so strange when a neglected animal takes a shine to someone who shows it a little kindness. The kindness is usually returned ten fold or more as they recover.
Hemmingway, yes a good name for the old fellow. Sandy do you take any photos of the horses when you first get them? That would be a testimonial of what you do. I do believe as visitors would view the horses, a sort of before photo with a little documentary as in you post, and after reading, they just might be tempted to be a little more generous and wanting to help.

I read your post to my wife, it left both of us a bit choked up. We are used to taking in abused animals. Haven't seen one yet that hasn't shown appreciation and love.

cheers
Willis

in case someone wants to see him, here's the extremely thin horse that arrived on my doorstep on Dec. 15. this was taken today, he's looking BETTER!!!

That is one scrawny gee gee. I thought it was Amy Winehouse for a moment. :D

I'm really happy he's got a chance with a new loving home. Please keep us updated with his progress.

LTF, how sad that humans can abuse such a beautiful creature. Looks like he has a really good appetite anyway. There goes another locomotive for feed. :)

I like the color and the markings on him. When he fills out again he'll still be a hansom horse. Lately, don't know if it's the times but there seems to be a lot of animal abandonment and cruelty in the news. Hard to believe that in this day and age that some people don't seem to realize that animals have needs and feelings also.
Well done "LTF"

Willis

I think he is a beautiful horse! What a great rescue story. I love hearing about other folks who have a heart for rescues. I rescue...hedgehogs. Not exactly on the same scale  but I get such a blessing just knowing that for a while, the little guys will have a decent life.

If you did so well in the snow and cold ($1600.00!!!) I am sure that an event in June would be awesome.

Hemmingway is a very lucky horse :)
