Steve's SOCAL BNSF layout

Been a little bit since I've been on here..... Work is busy and I'm getting ready to deploy next month for 7-8 months so I'll squeeze in an update while I have time.

First things first, another score... Three more locos, decoders on order.

Second is a bit of an update on the layout. I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on it but did manage to get a few things done.

I sanded and painted the benchwork. I still need to go back and touch up. I made some temp signs for my switches until I either remove the blocks all together or replace with tortoise switches.

I also added some palms to the layout, after all what would a SoCal layout be without palms. I wasn't a fan of them at first because they seemed so tall but I trimmed them down to what I thought looked right, let me know if you think I need to adjust....

I also won these backdrop buildings on eBay..... Says they're N scale but they seem more like HO to me.... Thoughts? I was thinking about trimming them down to put them flush against s backdrop once installed....

That's it for now, I'm working on a video to post prior to deploying - my "last run" for a while!

Stay tuned.

Thanks for the update Steve. Really like the photos. The layout is really coming together. The palm trees really help a lot. Also enjoyed the earlier videos you posted.

Good luck on your deployment. Be safe.

Well I finally got around to replacing my prodigy express with a prodigy advance 2 last night. I built a new shelf for this one to sit on. I installed two throttle face plates (another on order) and installed a second throttle holster for on the inside of the layout.

Couldn't help not posting this one..... palms at night and the street light across the street looks like the moon....

Great photos, and you're making a magnificent layout. The palm trees look fine. I've actually seen much taller ones in LA, so I'm not sure you even needed to cut them shorter, but they look good regardless. And, of course, I've also seen trees that height and shorter than that in LA. I think you're pretty much good with whatever feels right to you.

As for the backdrop buildings, they look proper N scale size to me. If they were HO they would literally be almost twice that size. They seem to be proportional to the box car that's sitting next to them, so I think you're good.

Again, the whole layout is looking good. I'm impressed with your work.

DRAT !! STEVE ...You stay safe. I wanted to come by and see your layout, but have had so many medical problems lately that seeing doctors and hospitals is all I have time for. Maybe I can hitch up with you when you return. Have been watching your progress for some time.

Great work and a good result in getting Venus in with the shot of the moon.

Thanks Toot, I didn't even catch that!

Sherrel, no worries at all..... Get well and we'll set something up when I get back.

Mike, thanks for the feedback. I agree with you on the Palms and buildings now that I look at them again. I was in Riverside and saw some pretty tall Palms too, funny how I was just thinking mine were too tall!

Thanks for the comments, it has a long way to go until it's finished!

Thanks again.

Enjoyed the video. Those palm trees sure set the location in the south west. Thay are quite an addition to the layout. Nicely done.

Hello my friend I watched your video man looks like a real railroad my friend great work and great video too I just love too so cool too. Thanks longbow57ca. and have great day thanks.

Looking forward to a new post, when possible. Someone was asking about a trackplan for a narrow space, recently on another thread, and I thought of your layout, but couldn't remember its name. Hope things are good!

Thanks for the feedback, I should be back to working on the layout and providing updates in a few months! In the meantime, I'm doing research on turnout control and signals/signal control so I can incorporate into this layout or the next.

Thanks again!
Steve

I tried to go with the Atlas system a few years ago, in N, but hardly anything has been available for it in years, fwiw.
