That sucks big time. I'm fortunate to have been able to pay cash for cars since 1996. Make 'em think that you're going for a loan and they discount based on the amount they think they will get as a kickback, then write a check at the last minute!
That's the only way to buy a new car, my dad did that very same thing with his last vehicle. The whole goal of current financiers is to get you, and keep you in debt.

True. Back in the late 1970s when money was tight for us, we wanted to buy some furniture on hire purchase. The hp charges were ridiculous, we walked out. Apart from buying the house everything is paid outright.

Good morning. It's clear and 60.

Several times over the years, we bought cars outright. That stopped when the price of vehicles we needed were so outrageous we were forced to finance. The car before this one, I only financed about $5k of the purchase price. When the engine was on the verge of another failure, I was forced to finance the "newsed" one to replace it. Of course, it was during the time of pandemic-induced car shortages, and paid dearly for it.

Morning all,

18° and feels like 8°. Far cry from the 80° (officially) we had yesterday afternoon. High later of 44° with diminishing winds.
Supposed to get warmer for the weekend. I did see a slight show of pink on the peach trees last evening, so probably no peaches this year, but like all "farmers" I'll hope I'm wrong.

Coffee and A double order of Corned Beef Hash this morning , Thanks Francine! Flo off today?

Terry: Sorry to hear about your finance woes. While I borrowed against the truck, I had it paid off in 18 months. At this time I'm fortunate enough to finally say that other than the house, we have no debt and actually have some money saved, along with having enough to pay the bills for the next 6 months on top of that.

On a side note, calling to see about getting the one piece tub\shower in the master bathroom converted to a shower unit only. It would be for the shower only as there is no reason to have a plumber connect a new toilet and vanity as I have done that enough over the years, and did 2 toilets last fall when we had the floors done in the other 2 bathrooms.

Good Morning All. Cloudy and 38°, the 20+ mph winds from the north give us a wind chill of 29°. High today and tomorrow around 51°; 70's on Friday and 80's for the weekend. Still have rain in the forecast for tomorrow, although the chance has dropped to 45%. The winds today will gradually diminish starting around noon.

Did some more mowing yesterday along with some hoeing in the garden. Instead of cutting up any more trees from the tree pile, I split some logs that are too big to fit through the heater door. That was a good workout. Some were green and some are dried. Seems like the dried ones split easier. I should probably look into renting a log splitter sometime in the future.

Yesterday out in the train shed, I felt lazy and ran trains mostly. I did finish painting all of the headstones that I had cut up, but I didn't add any more while I still mull over the placement. The more that I look at it, the more that I think that I may have gotten some too close together. Selective compression and forced perspective just don't justify it. I won't have to move many. As I type this, I remember that I failed to turn the heaters back on out there, so it will not be warm.

Here's a stretch of track through the town of Vernon.

And a train full of covered hoppers full of grain headed south on that stretch of track for export out of Houston.

Hughie - While I am bummed out regarding American Model Builders, I am at the point that I cannot use any more structures. As I recently posted I already have 13 kits from them, second only to Bar Mills with 16. That's only in regards to laser-cut wood structures. I have hundreds of plastic and other kits.
Mara - Nice score on the foam pieces.
Curt - The interior of the train shed, while not really huge, is big by many standards. It is a clear 20' x 32', more than adequate for my layout. I could have made it larger, but I limited it based on what I thought that I could handle maintenance-wise on a layout.
Chad - Congrats on the bonus.
Mike - I have left several salesmen smoldering over the years, especially since I don't exactly fit their profile of a cash-paying customer.

Today is Mario Andretti's 84th birthday. It is also the birthday of the late Rolling Stones founder and guitarist Brian Jones.

Everyone have a wonderful Wednesday.

Good morning from weather confused So. Central Wisconsin. Yesterday at 2pm it was 72f degrees and at 5 it was 47. Right now it is +14 feeling like -4 with a high today of 22. The winds are in the 20mph range with gusts into the high 30’s. But, thankfully the 1-2” of white stuff has not appeared. It had started to rain last night around 10 but just dampened the ground and stopped before bed at midnight!

Yesterday was kind of a wearing day. Waiting for weathering commission clients to show and both were later then the agreed upon times. The 1st guy is a road warrior with clients locally. He is now a regular who drops in every couple of months! I do like regulars…

The 2nd visitor last evening brought a couple friends along. They were late because they decided to have dinner at the local casino and then played a bit. They lost much of what they were going to spend with me. They were from Barrington in Northern Illinois and in the area at a morning op session and another layout session in the afternoon. They claim they will come back without stopping at the casino next time.

99% of my weathering commissions are paid through Pay Pal. Both transactions yesterday were cash. Because I am not good with cash, Terry got it all. Our Credit Union‘s nearest branch is about 130 miles north so Terry figures the cash I gave her may last the next 18 months, we rarely use it! It’s in the house if we need it. Heck last week we even found out our cookie pusher from the Girl Scouts does Pay Pal.

Terry wants to get out today but she is re-thinking that because of the wind chill.

enjoy your day

Morning folks, its currently 51 and WINDY. Gonna be a weather rollercoaster for the remainder of the week.

Last night I along with my parents enjoyed Taco Tuesday with my boss and his wife, she made taco pie while my mom made a chocolate chip pound cake with cream cheese frosting. Both were delicious!

Yes. I have been fortunate to be in a similar position since the early1980s. In the early days I would let the salesman ramble on about finance on a car whilst I was looking for the one I wanted. Once chosen, bring out the cheque book.
I now buy from the same dealer (who also services my car). The owner and staff know I pay outright, so sales service is more personal.
Back in the nineties it was time for a new car. Cash was out of the question so we went to our bank and got pre-approved
for a car loan. Off to the dealership, found a vehicle, negotiated a good deal since it was in the middle of winter and not
many cars were being purchased at that time.

Told him we already got pre-approved at the bank. They insisted we talk to the finance guy because of the great rates they
had. OK-talked to the finance guy and he came up with a percentage rate for a car loan. Told him our bank already
pre-approved us for 1% lower than what he quoted. Finance guy said that's only 1% difference. I said-OK you eat the
1%. End of conversation. Off to the bank we went.

You're making a lot of progress Swal.
Don't over do it though.
Some time back, I too moved to another bedroom while the house was being uprooted.
Hooger I really don't want the house anymore now that my wife is in a nursing home. Too much work mowing the lawn, shoveling snow etc. I'll be 79 come April and it's time for me to rest for a while.
I ordered a dumpster to throw out anything I'm not using now that she's gone and there's plenty of that in the house. I'm going to pack up most of my RR cars and model building. I'll keep some out to run some trains after all the interior work is done.

I hadn't heard of Operation Warboard. And 1:72nd scale is an oddity. The popular scales are 1:100 (15mm) and 1:56 (28mm).

Operation Warboard is really simplified. A guy and his son made it up back in 1976, and it was written for H0 scale as Roco had their line of military vehicles in that scale and 1/72 snd 1/76 were also popular modeling scales (dioramas etc) so vehicles were available and those scales are "close enough" to work together in their simplified rules. Its all before or at the beginning of the popularity of miniatures battles and before all the complicated rules started coming out and widely available (I'm sure there have been miniatures rules since forever but I don't remember seeing that many in the lat 70s -- early 80s. Started to see some in the hobby shop in the 80s though it seemed a lot of them were geared towards GHQ scale).

I had it in hardcover though mine is an early edition and has a different sleave than shown. That seems to be a later edition shown on Amazon. The one I bought on Aamzon was the updated softcover.

Totally understand my friend.
Hang tough. Stay strong.
Live a life of purpose.
Even if it means the bare minimum of standing in the sunshine and smiling.

Last vehicle I had a loan on was purchased in 1982. I write checks too. I doubt I'll be buying anymore. But that said, my thoughts were the same when we purchased a new 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. The check engine light lit up on the way home from the dealer and was never extinguished for more than a month or two in the entire 11 years we owned it. It had 65k miles on it when we sent it. The only vehicle out of the approximately 40 that I have owned that received a moniker. Its name was POS.

Hooger another problem is everyone is leaving NY. Most of my friends want to leave. With all that's going on here now property value has drooped. I'm a little better off because of the 500 or so houses up from the lake we have best property being most were built as summer homes on the lake with not much land attached.

Good morning All!!!

Flo, could I please have the "Claims Adjuster Special" again?
It's item #53 on the breakfast menu. 3 scrambled eggs, spicey ground pork sausage, broken hash browns and dry white toast. Served in a bowl with a side of sausage gravy and crumpled...

I'll be over here with the guys at the window booth. :)

I'm contemplating the same situation but in my case, I'm leaving any "property improvements" to the next owners. I had an appraisal completed last summer and it was strongly insinuated that who ever bought the place would likely keep my rental residence for the "caretaker" and tear our place down and replace it. Encouraging words for something you put 20 years into creating but the new reality hereabouts.

Morning folks

Cloudy and 32F right now. The hiatus between cold snaps. Spent a good portion of yesterday moving snow.

Moving more "stuff" today to second floor to make some wheelchair access. Most of that stuff should go straight to Good Will but can't do that yet.
