I love MRH.

Just wondering how others compare it to the newstand magazines, I haven't bought any in a while.

So much nicer to have the copy on my pc instead of taking up space on the shelf.

On the other hand, I can't at least, read it on the throne.

i like the MRH internet mag just as much as the MR at the news stand. I have not had a MR subscription for 10 years. so the MRH is what I now read. the only thing I dont like is that they dont post alot of pics of the overall layout that they are sharing. They tend to focus on details and put you in a small part of a persons layout. I like to see that but I also like to stand back and look at the big picture. I do think the MR needs to seriously consider what MRH has done for the hobby and make changes so they can stay around. I like both just as much but MRH is so much more easy to find.

Ill admit I enjoy MR. But MR is no competition to MRH. Full articles with 100% of how someone did thier how they built it type articles. Not stripped down like printed magazines. Even if the author of the article has to use 100 pages to detail and write out the article.

The main complaint I have about MR is every article or how-to article they do seems to be nothing but a big promotion of whatever product is based on what they are doing. If its a scenery article, its all WS products. Its as if they disguise it as one big paid ad. We did this and bought the product from them. We needed this or that and bought the product from this place. MR is so heavily reliant on thier advertisers that they wouldnt think of giving out articles on how to do things on the cheap or using altenate products that are half the cost then the manufactures or even free. I understand the reasoning behind it as a business decision. They would just assume readers spend 200 dollars for a Grassmaster instead of giving you an article on how to build one for 20 or 30 dollars like the articles available on the web. Hell, they wont even go to a home improvement store to get things like plaster. They would rather pitch you the yellow WS milk cartons of the same stuff.

MRH doesnt cater to that mentality because Joe (and crew) doesnt have to. Which IMO, is the beauty of MRH. Live interviews, videos, handy downloads right off the page. Various camera angles of models using thier Click-and-Spin option is fantastic.

There will always be a place for printed meterial though. As far as im concerned. Model Railroad Hobbyist is one of the best things thats come to this hobby in years, and not because its free.

MRH doesnt cater to that mentality because Joe (and crew) doesnt have to.

Fast Tracks is a bid advertiser in MRH, and their point man has a column and is the mag's official track expert. Yet Joe Fugate made it a point to say he mostly doesn't use their products, in part because of the expense. That said a lot to me.

I stopped subscribing to MR years ago. It seemed like more advertising than modeling information I could use. A couple of years back they tempted me with a free issue and a gift. Not much had changed since the last issue I had gotten.

I love the online MRH. I'm like a kid when that e-mail pops in, telling me it's ready to download. And (believe it or not) I like the ability to click on an ad when I want more information from the advertiser. Some of the stories are too long for me, but then I remember that I didn't pay for it and it won't have to add to the paper recycling bin load. Editorially, I like to see their proof-reading improve. Overall, I give them: 4 1/2 thumbs up out of 5.

Just discovered this thread

Just discovered this thread and wanted to say thanks for the feedback. While kudos are nice, it's the critical feedback that will help us make a better free magazine for all.

Wanted to mention we're going monthly as of January, if you haven't heard.

That's awesome! I love MRH. I love the fact that it's free and has great articles to read while on the can (I have a laptop :D)
