Nice looking loads indeed, Larry and Jerome. Trent, I read that article about using real coal loads although I think it's stuff like WS coal, not actually coal. I guess the idea is that loads and empties mean the real thing on his layout. To me, standing there filling 40 hoppers with coal would not be an interesting part of an operating session.

Not to mention anytime you get a derailment you'll need to get out the dustbuster.

I run live loads of coal all the time. Usually a 35 car train pulled w/3 engines. My coal is 3 diff. sizes & some of it is plastic pellets(very small for scale coal). Mine is glued in.

great looking loads everyone.
I was reading in MR this month about guys that run live loads in coal cars. that could get messy and heavy very fast. anyone here do this? I always wanted an automated coal load/unloader but it would be very tricky.

or how about this way to unload and load a coal car http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4toJA5EXcM&feature=related

I made a loadout and a rotary dumper. I haven't incorporated them into a layout but have done lots of short test trains. The loadout on this page has been neglected since we moved a few years ago and I recently made a new loadout of the large concrete silo variety and it seems to work very well but with the loading enclosed within the silo it is hard to see what is going on. The empties go in one side and come out loaded. I also have a video of the dumper dumping. It is 14Mb Quicktime so beware before you click.

I've been experimenting with loads and came up with this huge "cement pier" made out of an old bubble maker for an aquarium. I just painted grey it to make it look like cement.

If we look at more junk that looks like something else we would all have loads for all of those flat cars & Gondola's. LOL

I really like these heavy duty Westinghouse 8 axle flats with sprung trucks. After you install body mounted Kadees, they run great.

These are supposed to represent massive concrete pillars. Various sizes of wood blocks were painted grey although the grey does not show up well in the pics.

Dang this looks like a sweet thread, ill have to read more up on it when i have some free time to go through all 18 pages LOL

It must take some nerve, to load the backhoe like that, the first few times !!
Ron

How you like to be the guy running this backhoe,eh??:rolleyes:Yes this work train was running a few miles from where I live.
