GP40-2 compared to GP 40-3

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I am trying to but together as many Providence and Worcester engines as I can, weather painted in thier scheme or at least having that model for future painting. My question is what is the big difference between a GP 40-2 and 40-3? I have at least two dash 2s that could be used but they have Dash 3s.

Dash 3 is not an EMD designation. They are upgrades to existing models, most likely a GP40 or GP40-2, your best course of action is to compare photos of the prototype to different models to see with is closest and go from there.

The 3 GP40-3's that the PW has were originally built as GP40's. The 3001 was built as B&O #4021 in Sept.1971, the 3002 as SAL #617 in May 1966 and the 3003 as SAL #1571 in Dec. 1969.

You can find photos of these units at http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx?id=PW

For me, I would use an Atlas GP40 as the starting point and using the photos above to detail and paint them for the PW.
