I was so happy for Grampys that he got published in the Walther’s catalog that I thought maybe I would give it a try. I’m not as good a modeler as Grampys but maybe if I did something different it would make it. Here’s my first try. Do you think it would be accepted or not?

looks good but I would bump the F-stop on the camera to get the foreground in focus as well.
I'm not a camera person Drew so I'm not even sure what a F stop is. I'll have to look at my cheap Cannon power shot and see. I'm not buying a new camera so maybe I should forget about it.

its the depth of field. Most cameras have a manual adjustment some where in them. maybe I can come up there and take some photos for ya 2. get in that way.
That's a great idea I know your only about 40 minutes away.

Hi George: First, I really like that shot and believe it would have a good chance.
But, IMHo, it could be sharper. Are there any manual settings on your camera? I had to go through the manual on mine to figure out how to get manual settings. As Drew suggested, use the highest Fstop number, mine is 8.0. I also had to experiment with the manual focus to get good depth of field and overall sharpness. I also tweaked the photos in Picasa. I believe they will accept up to 10 photos, which I did. The more you send, the better chance they will use one. My suggestion, give it a shot. DJ.
Grampys and you have what kind of camera?
George
If i come up for a layout tour I'll also bring my camera gear.
this is one shot I'm planning on entering this year
Nice shot Drew I thought you modeled the D&H.
George
George, I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ7.
Great shot, Drew! DJ.
Grampys that doesn't tell me a whole lot. I guess it's digital? It know it takes great photos by your shots. I not buying one but they cost about what?
George
I do model a D&H take off, but have some run threw power because I love the blue bonnet SF units
As for a camera Canon 5D mk1
George, yes it is a digital, a step above a point and shoot. Two years ago it cost about $350.00 with rebate from Circuit City. DJ.

Nice pic. I agree with the fstop setting but I'm sure your canon cant change it since it's a point and shoot. I have a similar one but luckily my wife has an SLR that goes up to f20 or so.
What is the guy in the middle doing? If he's welding I don't think it would be happening during re-fueling. Also most railroads have union labor. Very un-realistic to have all working the same time. Usually there's 1 workign and the other 5 watching.
Good thinking your right about the welding and I worked as a hostler for about 3 years I should know better. When an engine arrived on the fueling pad everyone would do their jobs. Boiler makers would check the engine water and add steam generator water, that’s what the orange hoses are. Machinist would check the engine oil, brakes etc. Electricians really wouldn’t check anything unless there was a problem. Laborers would fuel the engine, clean the wind shield and cab. The hostler would then back up the loco to the sanding tower and the laborer would add sand. Then the engine would be put away if it wasn’t returning to service.

If you go into AV mode (you have a point and shoot camera?), you should be able to set the F ratio to about F8 with any luck at all. Back the camera up a bit from the subject...even 4" will make a difference. Don't use any but the teensiest zoom (better to use none at all) and then crop the image to get rid of the fuzziest ground material close to the lens.
Return to M (for manual) mode after you get the F ratio set in AV.
Thanks Crandell I get it a try but will most likely having Drew taking the photo for me.
George
I have no two cents (or sense lol) to throw in about the picture quality, but I do want to say that is some top notch, jaw drop modeling. Great scene.
George:
That is one great shot, it captures the outlying point service track perfectly. I'm not a camera person, but was an engineer, and what you have here is on the money.
Joe
Great shot George, I'll keep an eye out for it!
As for the welder, I see worse things that that on the RR, believe me!
Besides I think I heard him say he'd be finished in a minute!
