Can I get away with using #4 turnouts at a coal breaker. It would just be for hopper cars and Diesel Switchers. Trying to get as big as a yard as I can in a 4' by 8' area.
You could but be sure to avoid the dreaded "S" curve. That's a curve going one way then immediately going the opposite way. A straight stretch the lengh of the longest car should be in between.
number 4 is fine for spur tracks and industrys. 4 axel locos would use them all the time. 6 axel would be tight for real world but would squeez through
Ditto, to Trent. I have some #4's in industrial areas and don't have any problem with any of my locos, but definitely a slow go switch for the larger ones: particularly steam
#4's will work fine for a small yard. Search here for "compound ladder" to see a way to squeeze in more track but avoid the sharp curves that Jeffrey mentioned.
