As you said, it's a start

Hey carving out the first bit of space is a win, now build it before she changes her mind!

When we bought our house the wife wanted me to build a g scale layout in the back yard. I said no to that cause I hate gardening. So she suggusted I put up something in the basement for the grandkids. So now I have a basement full of ho trains,

I wish I had a basement ...

me too! no basements here at ground zero in Texas
Hi,
here are 2 versions of N scale /HOn30 Layouts that may work for you...easily modified to fit your needs:
2X3 ft
and the 3X3 ft one..used by me for HOn30 but based on an N scale track plan.
Here’s something to consider for the real estate challenged…

Hi,
the second Trackplan on my response is one for a table Top layout in an IKEA Liatorp table.BUT for my use in HOn30 the hight of the boards need to be changed....a bit more work than initially anticipated....
I have thought about a coffee table layout. But my interest lies in switching and a point to point layout right now. When I can get more space, I’m planning on doing a larger point to point but with the option for continuous running. Starting small.

When you say switching, do you mean industrial switching or do you mean making up and breaking down trains in a yard?
Industrial switching. My apologies for not being clearer. Trying to plot out my space on paper. DC for now. Solo operation. Running 4 axle diesels and rolling stock under 60 feet when possible. Originally planned 2 engines per trip…but may have to run one depending on what I can come up with.
Last weekend was a down time due to sickness. Next weekend heading to Steamtown for the Railfest. Week days, deal with kids while my wife works.
Just assume you'll be wanting a larger layout followed by an even larger one.

Yes, that’s true. Have to start small so when it ends up in the dumpster, the next one will be bigger and better!
As long as you know.

Don’t worry, I’ve got plans for each bedroom in my apartment…plus how to connect them together. I’ve been looking for a house…where I will have the basement for my trains. SWMBO has already promised that to me. That way she knows where I am and not getting into trouble elsewhere.
