Maytag "Danged Agitator"
Comments made in the year 1955:

"I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20."

"Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2000 will only buy a used one."

"If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous."

"Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?"

"If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store."

"When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage."

"Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls."

"I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying 'damn' in 'Gone With The Wind,' it seem s every new movie has either "hell" or "damn" in it.

"I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas."

"Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the president."

"I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now."

"It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet."

"It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work."

"Marriage doesn't mean a thing any more; those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat."

"I'm just afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business."

"Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress."

"The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on."

"There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $15 a night to stay in a hotel.

"No one can afford to be sick any more; $35 a day in the hospital is too rich for my blood."

"If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it."

Yep I remember a new Chev was $3500 and no sales tax, those were the days eh! :D

Cheers Willis

Let's not forget 5 cents for a Coke that taste like a Coke. I got out of the Air Force in 1966 and my brand new GTO cost $3400. My wife and I were married in 1966 and we had a combined gross income of $500 a month...we lived comfortably and I could even afford a 6 pack per week.

I don't drink beer, I drink soda. Soda is MORE expensive than beer where I live and it's getting harder to afford that six-pack a week. I could actually SAVE money switching back to beer!!!

Darrell, sober, and quiet...for now

Got my first car as a wedding present from my Dad. 1960 Volkwagen Beetle. It already had almost 100,000 miles on it. My Dad paid something like $350for it. I drove close to 100 miles a day going back and forth to college and work for a year and a half. By that time it had 130,000 miles on it. My senior year it got rear ended by a car and it was declared totaled by the insurance company. Spent $30, for new (truck) taillights, took a pipe wrench and bent the generator pulley more or less back into line and drove it for several more months (another 10,000 miles) before it really died. Sold that to a guy for parts for $75 after being given $500 from the insurance company. Spent $250 for 1956 Bug that had 195,000 miles on it. Drove that the rest of that year and my first year of teaching. The transmission died on the first day of spring 1969. Sold it to a guy for $150 who put it back on the road as a Dune buggy. Both of those cars got 33 miles to the gallon, could be driven anywhere in almost any weather, never failed to start even at 20 below zero, and were fun to drive. I bought a brand new one (super Beetle) in 1971. Cost me $2195. I drove that one until it rusted out and self destructed in 1986 after putting about 140,000 miles on it.

They just don't make them like they used to! (Just as well actually.....LOL)

Those were the days, except my engines didn't run worth a darn, and my silicon rectifier was not depedible. My first car cost$100.00 which is about all I would pay for it today. One of my engines did have sound, kind of a grinding sound.

Thats why someone needs to make a time machine so I can go back with my whole college trust fund, and go to college, buy 3 new cars, and store them until now :D
