I liked the improvement so much I went darker still
then I painted the nose and eye area a creamy white, then with a finer brush added a dark brown black for the nose and eyes, and deepened the hooves
as I paint I often make mistakes, no issues I wait for it to dry go back paint the before and then repaint,or just touch up with the previous colour if I just added too much of the last colour,
Jaz- thanks for talking us through your layered painting process. We often do not realize how much work is required to make a painted object appear natural.
I really like those big beautiful cow eyes!

and if you forget to wash them you can retro clean or just use like a cocktail stick.
Jaz-
I am such a cheapskate that I only use water based paints. I keep a small jar of water handy to put the brush in if I need to go away from painting more than a minute or two. This allows me to buy 5/0 and 10/0 brushes when they are on sale, instead of when I had a brush full of dried paint.

Jaz- I imagine you work on several trees at a time, but how long do you think it takes you to make one tree?
Especially one with the large roots and moss growing on it.
The first time as you get set up takes longest
i suggest a tray to collect the fallen greenery
plastercine to use as a stand I used das as a permenant base and draped over foam
3 wire thicknesses if you have the patience, main trunk, branches, fine branches
some an evening,a couple took a week but they were big projects
this one is a 150ft tree and a foot in real life too big for H0 in reality hard to place on 00 as well

I used to live near ancient beeches, they have roots that lift up out of the soil, or the soil erodes who knows, but I would walk through them in spring when the bluebells were out, I really should add some blue bells
I added squirrels, birds, fungi, moss on one side only a rabbit and a birds nest

Cheapskate my sentiments exactly, I buy cheap kids brushes at Xmas,I buy ladies. Makeup brushes from Poundland / dollar land :) to you, they cone with unusual angles and fans and foam 10 for a pound, I prefer water based paints on principle and often use little tester pots that have been reduced end of season, mixing acrylic rather than oil enamel is much easier, and I have an airbrush but inevitably hand paint because I like that.

I have copied each picture into a file on my computer for future reference.

the modeller looks like he used horse hair for the canopy, then fine green foam base for the leaves, the copper is self evident and it has a modelling medium worked into it and a grey trunk, and grey is as prevalent as brown, when I saw this I was like oh yes great reference so enjoy,
and apologies to the person who I cannot. name. If they ever see there work here, if so msg me and I will update.

Improving bought in model trees is quick and well worth the effort. These were super cheap probably because the colour was awful some green paint then some hair spray and green ‘grass’ wood or foam,I think you could avoid the re spray and go direct to hair spray and foam

Hornby shed
Bachmann coal bunker
the shed is a passable plonk and okay the coal bunker lacks any visible detail which is a shame as the moulding is actual quite nice
D5762780-814D-472A-A486-7177B4C1C8FA.jpeg

still a little white paint mixed with black, some yellow green for growth, age the roof similarly, and a bit dirtier at the bottom,
B33B4CC5-A6EA-446B-9B52-1D09AE024023.jpeg

the coal bunker had the shape it was crying out for colour, black grey and a dull brown for the rusty lid
some coal ballast, some extra green for texture on the ground, neither structure needs to be grounded they often float in reality
the tree had some added wood tuft added
394DEB0F-0A9B-420F-894B-446E82C9E0DA.jpeg

6C614F17-B3BF-4349-816B-929AADC0D371.jpeg

natural shadows add to the realism, the texture of the wall, the buildings opposite the open gate come together nicely for a little garden scene, not a major player on the layout but something your eye can Passover without screaming model.
As a child we had a garden with sheds and a coal bunker, although it lacks the pig bin for food scraps.Health and safety saw that off.
