Tip, we think of water as blue, but when modelling it it is safe to paint the base shades of brown, black, green, and paint in the direction the water flows, it gives a much more natural look, plus if varnish or p,attic top coat whilst wet use a cocktail stick and some white and drag it through the wet especially ‘behind’ any bumps as water looks white when aerated.

I went a bit over the top, but you get the idea.
notice i thinned the white as I went giving less solid colour and becoming more transparent.

Had a loading issue
so white the legs the nose the eyes then black the centre of the eyes and nose and hoofs

same pack of animals - new paint job, worth the effort, use acrylic not enamel paints so not too shiny

same cows different breed
notice some grinned paint under belly for shadow

more expensive models and pre painted the right one as bought the left after tinkering in day light the colour can look weird but on layout under good lighting conditions

a flesh colour to the udders works well also

these are actually simple tricks, take minimum paint, and well worn almost ready to throw away paint brushes, the dirty water underneath improves the realism in my opinion. And if you can get them just out of focus close up you can fool people for a second or so, which is my aim.

Realism is in the eye of the beholder, and the more conversant a person is with the subject the more they can see faults, that said

you can fool some of the people all of the time (Lincoln did not model railways)
All of the people some of the time (even for a split second is good in this hobby)
but not all of the people all of the time (so pick your level)

people appreciate all types o f modelling, the old stuff as it was in the day
the old stuff updated. To try to fool people
the cheap stuff and the best you can get
your childhood relived
a facsimile of a real place
i could go on and on because many of us enjoy this hobby from different and multi layered levels,
in my opinion, my own personal opinion being able to enjoy as many of the levels as possible
being able to benefit from the experience of people who worked the real railroads
of sharing modelling ideas to achieve personal goals
of keeping alive older kit or broken unfixable kit
of having a laugh
and of appreciating what other people achieve even when it is not my own area of modelling,
of avoiding being patronised or being patronising
of having friends even if you never meet them, and being supportive,
these are usually achieved on a forum,
for me the coffee shop is an ideal safe place under Covid conditions, where you are not restricted or edited for non railway chat, where you can have a little rant, and whilst avoiding politics or sensitive issues via a moderator who can kindly ask you to pull your neck in you can share the highs and lows of your life,
if you have never visited the coffee shop here on this forum I would encourage you to do so, no we are not single focused, and there is likely stuff people will wish to scroll past BUT it is more of a sharing caring support group which in our troubled times can give much to people that they might otherwise miss out on. I joined as a overseas 00 gauge not the H0 norm but our ideas and mechanics all overlap and we can have a virtual cuppa and share a recipe and show off our wins and losses and get some emotional support. Which is weird because if you look at actual support groups you want to tesr your hair out in minutes if not seconds lol.
Anyway I spend a lot of time in that coffee shop posting and reading others thoughts, I scroll past the American football, or hockey or baseball as it had no context for me, I see snippets of interesting facts and insights on railway and non railway, I see other modellers source items, which give me great ideas to adapt to mine, and you can ask for help, what more can I say.

realism is often aided by soft focus, or out of focus, same thing one is easier to achieve, soft focus is often expensive, out of focus often achieved by accident :)

Similarly figures

if it has a good face the n you can face it towards the camera,
a good profile use that,
but if the features are pretty much useless then use the back of the figure,
these are set at a distance with natural light making the most of the shadows to enhance them

tip never paint a blond haired model yellow, use beige.
here I added some thinned white for greying hair
the plastic bag he is throwing in the bin hides his poorly modelled hands
the original yellow jacket was too bright for my liking so I dirtied it a bit to tone it down
shame a bout the plastic filament I missed.

Perfectly good model, did desperately need weathering, but I like to blend them in

I added some yellow for lichen, and a small square of paper for the door
i ran the colour into the grooves just as rain would wash the dirt.

and embedded the base in ballast to avoid floating issues, as I had aged the building I added some growth to the surrounding area

I was just looking at the water, I love modelling water, and it occurred to me I could show off a little, I accidentally found a way to make ripples,it was a summer I had put down a layer of varnish and it was touch dry - but unknown to me not completely dry - and I shoved a second layer on,now those two layers dried at different rates and I ended up with ripples, I then duplicated it and found I could replicate the results
BFA0F636-CD06-4FEA-9EC4-27C27EA39E9C.jpeg

I then added modelling water and used a cocktail stick to add waves, and introduced white for airiated water, the white at the front is just a good angle photograph catching light, the white on the beach edge is paint, and the sand looks so sand like because it is in fact fine sand.
