Afternoon, everyone.
Andrew, I was in London during the summer as a small child. I remember it as being unbearably hot since air conditioning didn't exist. The big story of the day was the London Stock Exchange took the extraordinary step of not requiring traders to wear a tie and jacket! How times have changed. Don't worry, though, London is always closer to rain and cool weather than a heat wave, unlike Alabama.
Jeffrey, sounds like that new A/C unit will do the job. Now you need to make a new sign for it.
BOC, it's about time you had sun and stopped stealing our rain. Looks like the trough is befinning to slide south and a high pressure ridge is building north. That gives up some hope that we may finally get some rain. The thing with Sarah Palin is really bizarre. I'm sure more details will come out.
Corey, at least you got to see some kind of passenger train. The only one I've seen in years is at the Montgomery Zoo.
Chris, two things learned in law enforcement. The first is that, unless you're working the case, almost everything reported in the news is either wrong or sensationalistic. I have no idea why this girl was in this car with this guy. I'm sure she was under some kind of court order to stay away from him and he's probably on parole and was ordered to stay away from her. The police and child protective services do have a positive requirement to carry out court orders but they aren't there 100% of the time so almost anyone can get around any kind of supervision, if they are smart enough (or dumb enough, sometimes).
The second thing I learned is that anyone can sue for anything but it doesn't mean you'll win. I was sued twice when I was a deputy, once for excessive use of force and the second for groping an intoxicated female at a traffic stop. Both cases were dismissed without me even having to put on a defense because the plaintiffs had such weak cases. California finally passed a law allowing a defendant or the state to recover costs in the case of a frivolous law suit and this woman had to pay the DA $5,900 in costs when the judge ruled her case was frivolous. If Florida doesn't have a law like this, it needs one. The number of lawsuits, particularly against government agencies, plummeted after the law was passed. Our county also had a policy of never settling a case out of court. It cost money in the short run but saved us a bundle in the long run because people who were working the system sued for everything hoping to get a quick out of court settlement.
It's still blazing hot in the Heart of Dixie, with a temperature of 103 and a humidity of 18%. The weather guessers are saying we might get some thunderstorms tomorrow but we are going to have to moisten up the atmosphere a heck of a lot in the next 24 hours. We are having homemade barbeque, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, and lemonade - hows that for a Southern Fourth? My wife bought a Boston butt for the barbeque. No, don't laugh, all you real Southerners, but I thought a Boston butt was some guy's read end who happened to come from Boston. I had no idea that's where barbeque meat comes from. Dianna just rolls her eyes and considers me an idiot about such things.
