I was gonna say Tom, I can send some heat over.

It is already 93 F here, feels like 97 F. Supposed to cool off later down to like 80 F.

I miss winter. At least then I didn't have to cut the grass in this weather.

Dan, it could be worse. It's 95 here w/heat index 105 and its still going up  I just got back inside from working on the porch...a few hours of this is too much;).

Afternoon, everyone.

Phillip, I'm glad your ear pain has eased some. What did the doctor have to say about the cause?

BOC, even though you'll still get some rain, it looks like you're headed into a drier and more normal pattern. There's one more front to the west of you but even that doesn't look it will produce as much rain as you've had lately. I'm hoping I'm right, at least, since our high presurre system has to retrograde west and north and start blocking some of your storms before we have any chance of rain.

Karl, it certainly seems like Alabama has become the heat center of the nation the last few weeks. The heat is tolerable when we at least get a little rain but this continuing hot and dry weather is wearing. Nice find for free. I never find anything like that by the side of the road.

Ken, sounds like some really serious cyber attack you're dealing with. I hope they get the problem squared away soon. Vista 64 has been a giant pain in the butt but I think I have everything working now. Last issue is hunting down the 64 bit drivers for the keyboard and mouse.

Tom, I get in those modeling funks sometimes too. I go to the basement, look at everything that has to be done, and decide a nap sounds better. :) I find I get more done by only going down to complete one task and looking at the whole layout. It's kind of like a project plan - you do it one step at a time, just stop looking past the first page or you'll go pyschotic. :)

Jeffrey, it's been windy here as well as hot and I've been waiting for more fires to break out. We had a firebug running around last year who was setting five or six fires a day. We were lucky no one died in some of those fires. The state fire marshal's office did a good job of figuring out his pattern and he got caught setting a fire. He's in prison now and it seems, from the drastic decrease we've had in woods fires, that he may have been at this for several years.

Andrew, nice to hear that London is having some real summer weather. Yes, indeed, our bodies let us know how old we are even when our mind doesn't believe it. :)

Dan, I always said I missed winter in Ohio when it got hot in the summer. The, when it was winter, I missed summer because I was freezing to death and had to shovel all that snow. I'll still take our hot summers to having five months of gloom and snow again.

Our high has been 106 today but we're "down" to 100 now and are getting some clouds and a few baby storms to the south of us. Even the wind isn't quite as scorching so maybe there's a chance of a stray shower later today. I'll take anything at this point. My lawn is starting to turn completely brown.

Phillip Stay away from my yard I just mowed it and it will be ready to bale tomorrow. I mowed the yard across the street last night about 7 when I started and by 8 the grass was damp and by 8:30 I had to stop mowing around my garden because it was making grass blobs as big as softballs. I remowed the yard across the street this afternoon in the opposite direction and made windrows out of the dead grass and after a bite to eat I am going over to rake it up and put it on her burn pile. I will do the same thing to my yard tomorrow. It is a little bit of work but the lawns look so much better this year by being mowed on a more regular schedule and also by picking up the grass when it is very heavy and thick.

We've caught several here in the past 15 years. Unfortunately it's just the tip of the iceberg. Most of them are kids.

Got done all the dang running around for work so I get a day off tomorrow---YAY!!!----which will be spent doing the dang lawn:mad:---

We got to 29C and the weatherguessers gave us a 30% chance of showers and T'storms---we did not get the T'storms but a 30 minute monsoon showed up. Our gardens are looking very lively around here---that is for dang sure:eek::rolleyes::rolleyes::D

Jim We are starting to get a little more gaps in the rain/sun cycle so maybe by next week things should start to get normal---they are saying the temps up here will be a bit cooler than average with above average rainfall---:rolleyes:
Hopefully the firebug thing won't get as stupid as up here--in the last few weeks one little area of London had several fires all attributed to arson. Of course, all of these are taking place within old, or abandoned, buildings----these are not fun----

Evening yall,

Just a quick drive-by. Still don't have external internet access at work, and when I got home I got involved in printing and setting up my new car cards and waybills - Stephanie (my 10yr-old) even helped me with some of the folding!

...
Ken, sounds like some really serious cyber attack you're dealing with. I hope they get the problem squared away soon. ...
Jim, what has the top brass freaked out is the fact that somebody actually penetrated the firewall. Everybody thought our network was an absolute fortress, that this could "never happen to us." But it did - the perpetrators were not mischievous high school kids, but highly trained pros who "do this for a living" as our CIO put it. Now we're encrypting everything and trying to make it frustrating for a hacker to extract large volumes of data even if he does manage to get inside the firewall. Unfortunately the new restrictions are also forcing me to redesign some of the applications on the databases I manage.

Off to bed with me now, I can barely prop my eyelids open - g'nite!

Ken, sounds like there must have been an exploit in that firewall somewhere for them to get through. OTOH, data encryption is really the way to go since no firewall is ever 100% secure. I was consulting for a large utility in California and, after 9/11, we installed encryption on everything related to our nuke plant, right down to e-mails and meeting notices. I had to rewrite a lot of Outlook and Excel addins and macros to comply with the data encryption standards and it was royal pain. I guess it was worth it in terms of data security and it sure was worth it in terms of my billable hours. :)

I dunno, BOC, I still think you guys are going to dry out some. All the storms are starting to take a more southerly path as high pressure builds into your area. You should get some hot temperatures tomorrow and Thursday with some opoup thunderstorms but nothing too organized. The next organized front looks like it will move through on Saturday and, after that , you should have at least a week of pleasant temperatures and mostly sunny skies. Like I said, I hope I'm right, because a high building into your area is the only way we are going to get enough return air from the Gulf and instability to give us some rain.

Jeffrey, we caught a bunch of these guys in California. As you say, most of them were kids but some were true psychopaths and a few were volunteer firefighters. Some were trying to make some extra money from being placed on the state payroll for a large fire and others just liked to watch things burn. Arresting a volunteer firefighter was always tough because it made the public wary of all volunteers.

Larry, I remember having to mow my lawn as a kid in Ohio after those prolonged rains but I did it with a push mower. Man, that was hard work. It took about three days to get the whole yard done, not counting raking.

Phillip, could be allergies, especially with all the damp weather you've had up there. Between the normal allergens and the spores and molds bought on by the rain, you can get a pretty good sinus infection. I suspect some dry weather will help as much as medication.

Well, I'm running on 64 bits tonight. I finally got everything installed or decided I could live without the things that just don't work with 64 bit Vista. Still some things to work out, like a weird aspect ration on my monitor, but Vista has so many settings hidden so deep in menus it wil take me a while to work all that out. It's a Dell laptop and, so far, it's perfoming well. Lots faster than my 2003 era Toshiba. I get to hook Dianna's up to everything tomorrow as well as install a new printer. She had a lot less junk on her computer so I'm hoping things go easier. Still a toasty 80 degrees here. If things set up right, we should be getting more clouds and isolated thunderstorms each day through Monday. Doesn't mean we'll get any rain but the highs should only be around 95, which feels surprisingly good compared to 106. :D

Good morning folks.

I had a busy day off yesterday. I managed to cross off quite a few 'things to do' on my list. I installed the new TIVO, painted a planter box, washed both cars, transferred a title for said car, got a hair cut, swept the garage, shopped for two hours, vacuumed the house, planted previously mentioned planter, and (takes a breath) GLUED DOWN THE TRACK ON THE TRESTLE! I even managed to attach the track on one end so it's half done. Now I need to realign the track on the other approach and the trestle installation is complete! Did I mention that this thing is taking forever? Actually, I'm taking forever to build it. I picked the most difficult part of the layout to do first. The other sections don't need to be so complete right away.

You guys sound as busy as ever. We went from ninety something yesterday to seventy two after a short, nasty storm. Hopefully this weather breaks soon. It's too early to have this kind of humidity.

I hope you all have a great day. Did I hear there is a party at Chris' house?

Good morning folks

It was 71 F and you can feel the humidity kicking in. High will be 83 F.

Last night my daughter had her last softball game of the season as they lost in the playoffs. She still has the All-Star game on Saturday. Not much else to report. I did not get any modeling done but I did dust off a few issues of Model Railroader that I had not previously read and began thumbing through them.

Tonight we have Cub Scouts so it will be a little hectic.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Good Morning--

Kinda "Stick and Gum" as our neighbour's daughter puts it:):). Going to a high of 32C with a heat index of around 36C----And sunny---

I've got the day off today so I get to cut the lawn:(, clean out the toolshed:eek::mad: and some more yardwork later:(. After the list of "gotta do's" I'll have some time on the layout to do some handlaying new track--:D

Jim We did get this odd duck monsoon thing---it was just unstable enough that it did do the popup thing anyhoooo--
I was always amazed at just how "open" a lot of companies were/are when it came to security on their computers. The thing Ken's company is dealing with made me think that it had to have been a hacker in the first place. Now, hopefully, the encryption process will keep the site more secure. Unfortunately, the internet connection will have to be tightly controlled---

I'm BACK!:eek::eek:

We had a fun time and glad to be back! Also what the heck is all over my dogs tail:confused:! and why does the other one have a funny twitch:confused: And what happened to my obital bat fish:confused: Good Lord the house is a wreck:eek::eek::eek:  Youz guys got some explaining to doooooooo:mad::eek: My wife is PO!:eek::eek:

I just got home to check on things and check in on the dogs and then we must run my nephew back home to the in-laws and pick Rico up! I got tons of pictures to torture you with:D:)

BTW: the day we went to Universal theme parks the heat index was 108* with no breeze:eek: we got some rain tue morning and late evening.... Man we sweated our butts off! when I get back I'll give a detailed report!

Afternoon, everyone.

Corey, I'm glad to hear you finally got the track on the trestle. Wasn't that bad, was it? It almost seems like our dread of doing something always turns out to worse than the real thing. Sounds like you got a lot of other things done too. Other than battle my bew computer and killing a wasps nest, I did nothing useful.

Tom, sorry to hear your daughter's team lost in the playoffs but there's always next year. :)

BOC, looks like a hot couple of days for you. Just enough unstable air for some pretty good thunderstorms but they should be scattered. After than, you should cool off and start to be at least normal in terms of rain fall. The thing about computer systems is there's always a way to get in if you are determined and have enough resources, especially if a government is helping you out. Using NSA quality encryption makes the entire effort futile since any data you'd get would be about a year old before you'd be able to unencrypt the first piece of data you got. This is really the answer to computer security issues but it does take a lot of rewriting of programs and lots of software to decrypt things coming in. You still have the problem of system administrators changing keys often enough to make the encryption scheme keep working. Sys admins tend to get lazy about this and that compromises the whole effort.

Chris, is that what that big fish was called? Sorry about that but it sure tasted good on the grill. He just kind of jumped out of the tank. I think Karl did something to the dogs but I wasn't there at the time. I was out doing wheelies on the tractor. That thing sure is fun when you get it up to about 25 and see how many spins you can do with it. :D I think Rex and the cheerleaders were responsible for most of the damage to the furniture. Those girls sure get wild with a few bottles of JD in them. We did try to make sure that all the thongs and such got back on the right girls but there may be an item or two we missed since the girls kept running outside and mooning the neighbors. The cops were pretty nice about the whole thing but we did have to quiet down a bit after 2 am. That guy that lives to the right of you is quite a party animal too. Between him and Rex, the girls kept making noises like happy chipmunks - I heard something about a choo-choo in a tunnel but I assume Rex was showing them pictures of his layout. I guess everyone liked Florida. We did end up using one of the gators from the canal behind the house for target practice. I hope it's not smelling too bad yet but I think I'd probably clean up the mess before those buzzards get any closer. ;) Glad you had a good time cause we sure did!

It's still ungodly hot here with a high of 104. Have some more baby storms to the south of us but nothing for us...again. :( At least we got a few clouds out of it so it's "only" 101 right now. Only in Alabama can you write "only" and "101" in the same sentence. :) The new computer seems to be doing it's job so far. I told Dianna I'd set hers up as soon as she cleans off her desk. She has a filing system based on what pile and in what location everything is in. If I touch it, I'll be accused of losing every important paper in the house for the next two months. I already get accused of enough things without setting myself up for more. :D.

Chris:

Sorry about the mower!

You see, Dan got all energetic and took off with the mower---I had to follow him as we went up the interstate scaring the bejibbers out of everyone----he sort of lost it down by one of the canals----:eek:

-----------------------------------------

Got the dang toolshed cleaned out and had a whole pile of junk to take to the recyclers-----then did the little scrap of lawn we have------now, I'm bushed;);)
