blended the second module in today, two down one to go, lots and lots of parking lots and roads to do yet right along the back and then some airbrush grime on the ballast to finnish it off

Most of my weekend fun was being a guest operator at the North Shore Model Railroad Club in Wakefield, Massachusetts. They have a route which models a fictional railroad across the Appalachians from West Virginia to the ocean.

There's the engine service facility at Nickless yard, operating Nickless, operating the yard at Charleston WV beside the steel mill, and Extra 97 West on one of the bridges near the summit of the mountain crossing.

My Viaduct was originally built as a competition entry . I finally feel It had got to a point I could take the final pictures for the competition. So It was placed in the car and driven 10mins up the road onto Saddleworth Moors about as far as a Lancashire Lad dare go :D

Here are some of the pics (I got some strange looks from passing motorists !!)

John,

I really like the colors that you used for your bridge. It really looks like concrete. Could you please explain to me what steps you took to create such a real look, and what colors you used?

Thanks

The concrete effect is done in a couple of steps.

Paint the surface with plasterboard joint filler ( As builder Ive got a 10litre tub in the garage :) Its pre mixed and dries light beige) The filler is diluted slightly with water to allow it to be applied with a brush. I applied it in horizontal bands to a pencil mark to try and simulate casting joints.

The finished plaster then had white enamel paint added to represent the lime staining.

Last step a thin wash of acrylic matt black to weather which is applied a bit thicker to darken some areas to represent water staining.

Holy Crap John, those shots are incredible. That first diesel shot is my favourite of the group. The lighting is spectacular.

I finally took some time to move my pictures from the camera to the computer so I could post some!

1. You may remember me posting a shot of a resin caboose kit I was building before Christmas. I finally finished it today. ETR is the local short line in around here.

2. I also have three of my VIA LRC cars 99% finished. I just have to paint a attach the diaphragms. I am very happy with the appearance of these cars, but they don't run very well due to an odd truck design. I hope they run alright at the train show in two weeks.

3. This is the second of my two Kato CP AC4400's. I'm not a GE fan, but modelling modern CP leaves me little choice in what to model. :) While not up to Jerome's standards of wrecked units, this one displays some damage from a turbo charger fire. Not an uncommon occurrence when these units first arrived on CP.

4. Yet another GE model, this time a P42DC in VIA Rail colours. I've been testing some new weathering techniques on these two engines, and I am very happy with the results so far. This engine looks very good with the LRC cars :)

Thanks I like the first diesel shot too here are a couple more.

This could take the edge as being better than the first diesel in the previous set

This gives a but more distance

I was running out of sunlight by the time I took the diesel shots and at the time wished I had started earlier, but looking at the results I think the late sunlight very low has added an extra dimension to the colours.

Blimey John, fantastic work, you were lucky not to bump into those queer tyke folks over them thar hills, i contemplated taking a module up rivington today but decided against it, to many loose bits still to secure, tonights sunset would have been a stunning backdrop, here were looking towards Ken Larsons house over the pond

Looks like it is in Australia/new Zaeland!!! beautiful landscape you have!!
haven't been here for a while just because I was only making trees and I think posting them each time is boring...
But now I started to make 2 N modules with a chem.plant( part of it!)and a farm in N scale out of cardboard...and some other "recycled" stuff...hope to post some more pics and "How I made it"..this week

Above all: I still visit this site each day and it is great...all those fine contributions overhere! even as a "N scaler"...=) Thanks GUYS!!

just one picture of the farm in the sun (overhere it was spring ,almost 15 degr. C !! )and the other one of the 2 new modules...still in the design phase...

Wow. John those outdoor shots are great! Did you actually have the diorama on top of your car? Of course it has to be a great model too, in order for everything to look realistic!

Not possible to do outdoor shots locally, light snow most of the day, so I took some indoors on dioramas. Here's one of my scratcbuilt HO scale Bucyrus steam shovel:

John P~ Love the picture of the bridge in the layout you were using. Great shot.

John T~ The viaduct really turned out quite nice, very realistic. Keep up the great work.

Bob~ Fantastic shot of the steam shovel. It reminds me of a childrens book that I had long ago in which the main character was very similar to that, "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel". Thanks for sparking the memory. :) Wish I still had that book.

Good evening guys,

Lots of great photography here this week! All my work has been on stuff not worth pics, so nothing to contribute this time. But I still have a sizable inventory of unbuilt structure kits stored under the layout, so...one of these days...

John T, that's got to be the best looking model of a aquaduct I've ever seen, definitely your magnum opus. Wish I'd had the foresight to do my layout in modules so I could photograph scenes in the sun like you did.

Zak, didn't you also have a shot with some BNSF units coming out the tunnel? That was my favorite, looked totally proto, wish it was still there. Your MRL units look pretty good too though...

Fred, I see your true feelings about GE showing on that AC4400 paint job! :D Looks very real though. I, too, have a preference for EMD on my pike, but there are so many GE's on CSX in the early 1990s that I have to have a few in there.

Steve - I really got a charge out of seeing the Mickey Dee's underneath that aquaduct with a steam-powered train on it, nice job! Kind of like contrasting the profane against the sacred.

Bob, your stuff always looks great, what more can I possibly add.

Jos, get-looking farmstead - good to see some of your stuff in here for a change!

Even if I did have portable modules, the weather in my area would've been too brutal for staging pix - 25mph susained winds with 50mph gusts!

[LATER EDIT:] Chip, you snuck that one in while I was still composing my reply. Fantastic, it resembles some of the scenes I've been seeing in the Grande Man's photos of industrial archeaology!

Mike Mulligan is my favorite!

My photo:
